okthen

You know your growing old when you can't remember the words to a song.

Particularly whilst singing.......

One you wrote yourself.

As for the song sounds familiar but otherwise can't add anything.

mouldy,

I often feel that I am growing old disgracefully when I find myself acting like I did when I was a kid, irresponsbly. I never will squelch the kid in me though. I may be a danger to myself and others, but please don't lock me away!

Last week I bought two books from a chain of nostalgia shops in the UK called Past Times. The books were on growing up in the 50s and being young in the 60s. They mix people's reminiscences with ads and photos of the period. I remembered an awful lot! They showed 5 typical albums of the late 60s - Pink Floyd, Doors, Moody Blues and a couple of others. Guess which ones I've still got in one form or another!

Those of you who want to get wry comments on growing old disgracefully should listen to Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2 between 7.30 and 9.30 am GMT. The audience does appear to be international.

When my son was 10 he made the profound statement that young was up to 20, middle age was up to 30 and after that everyone else was old. Jokes on him.

He is 47 and just retired from the Air Force and now works for CSX railroading, My 26 year old grandaughter works for Tri-rail as an Engineer driving trains and my 6 1/2 year old great grandaugter is learning to dance.

I work everyday as a aircraft tech rep, drive and repair my bosses 72 foot yacht, carry a 188 average in bowling, shoot in the low hundreds in golf, I am learning to play the five string banjo, and my Irish heritage keeps the Guinness flowing, the Vodka and tonic flowing and can maintain a steady step with a snootful. My most fervent wish is to play the banjo and dance with my wife at my Great Grandaughters.

I am going to be 69 in June, and dont have time to be grow up or grow old. I am active in my Parish and keep telling the Pastor that when I grow up I want to be like my friend ED who is like a Leprechaun. I still turn and look at a pretty girl amd a pretty woman. There may be snow on the roof but theres still fire in the furnace and not just in my mind. The head is still covered with hair, its silver gray, and not to thin.

Hell, with my great-grandaughter I dont have time to get old?? Besides who wants to, I hate rocking chairs and I would miss to much fun.

And everyday I thank My Lord for the first breath in my lungs and the sight of daylight and the realization that whatever happens for the rest of the day is up to me and him. OLd?? hell thats just a state of mind.

Mickey 191, Good catch! I was utilizing poetic/temporal license. Wasn't thirty years, though. 1980, methinks. I lived in a co-ed dorm at university, and for a few bright shining weeks the majority of us were hooked on that bloody program. Saved a lot of money by not going to the pub those afternoons, but other than that, I'm not too proud of that aspect of my education. I remember walking between the two residence halls one afternoon, when a huge roar erupted from all the common rooms on all the floors. This was when Rachel stabbed Janet in the pool. Or vice versa. Or Mac stabbed Janet. Or Colonel Mustard poked Rex Morgan in the arm with a penknife.Or something. Don't think I watched much after that. And anyhow, space and time are curved- not only do I sometimes see things that happened thirty years ago, oftimes I'll see things that aren't even there.
Cheers, Bardford

Age is definitely a state of mind (I hope). I'm a 56 year old grandfather (born 10-05-44)with hair down to my waist(hope it'll grow on my head by next year), fed up with being the only non musician in generations of my family, I'm learning the 5 string banjo.I have a ball, travelling around to music festivals in my old Transit. An old shipmate of mine told me years ago that it was better to wear out than rust out and I've been trying to follow that tip since.

Mom says, as she struggles out of a deep set chair, "oh I'm getting old." Father watching says,"you're not getting old-you ARE old." He made it to 92, still riding his bike. He wouldn't give in to the passing years. There is a lesson there. Bardford, Would you tell me how you are able to see "Another World" of 30 yrs. ago? Thanks. Slainte.

" What's the life of a man any more than a leaf? A man has his season, so why should he grieve? All thro' this life we appear fine and gay-- Like the leaves we will wither, and soon fade away!

Had you seen the leaves but a few days ago, How beautiful and green they all did seem to grow; A frost came upon them and withered them all, Then a storm came upon them, and down they did fall.

What's the life of a man----"

This is as young as I'm ever gonna be, so I'm trying to cherish this, my advancing youth. Six or seven years ago, in my mid-thirties,I joined the neighbour kids in a road hockey game. Another kid rode past on his bike-"Hey, Brendan", says he to my young neighbour."Who's the geezer?"
Little whippersnapper. I had half a mind to give him a good talking to, but the prunes kicked in right about then, and I had taken my dentures out for the hockey game, and anyway it was time for my TV program - Mac and Rachel had a big fight and Janet was standing by the door listening when the show ended on Friday, and I didn't want to miss this episode. And the outreach nurse was coming to do my feet. Also I needed to put some unwrapped candies into my cardigan pocket so I would have something to give to visiting children.

In Safeway the other day, a kid about 7 was bouncing a rubber ball and saying "bounce it against the Seven Up....bounce it off of the potato chips...bounce it over by the Hawaiian Punch.." then he bounced it behind me and said "bounce it behind the Old Guy..." I gave him a good-natured smile and booted it into the frozen food aisle.

I can't believe, the kids I used to baby sit for, are now, graduated from university, at university, and old enough to go to the pub, and bump into me when I am in the pub. Makes me feel old!

Also can't believe it's ten years since my first neice was born, I have been graduated for nearly 6 years, it was 10 years since I left school.

That I don't like Radio one so much now, and most of all I'm getting closer to 30!

I will be 50 this year. I never planned to be 50, it just sort of happened, and I'm not sure I even know what it really means. My memory extends farther than some, not as far as others, I'm still in college (my father avoids answering any question about my age when his friends ask him how old his daughters are), I have a grandchild (!)who's 8, I don't own a house--I can't quite get used to the fact that it's 2001. I remember thinking when I was 10 or 12 that MAYBE I'd be alive when the century turned.

I think I work with teenagers because I like to remember what it's like to be so alive, so torn by hormones and emotions and uncertainties--even though I think teenagers today have to deal with things I was thankfully unaware of (and some that weren't even invented yet when I was 16). There is also something very poignant about realizing that I'm no longer an adolescent, a state of being I think I dragged out for a much longer time than I could have. If I had any doubts that I'm an adult, they're certainly gone now. I've worked for the last week with a gently autistic 15 year old girl, who has a tendency to say exactly what's on her mind--the first day I met her, she said, you're kinda old, huh. I agreed that I was, kind of. She wanted to know exactly how old. I said I was over 40. Oh, she said, really, really, really old. Then she said, you have kinda thick eyebrows and you should really shave off that mustache. I have to admit that I felt more than a little self-conscious the rest of the evening. But I don't know about shaving...

Yes, Amos, it is a lovely haiku. It has stuck with me for decades, particularly as, in the wet season, our garden is filled with myriad of those tiny creatures revelling in their brief existence. I am 58 with 6 grandchildren, but I can honestly say that I have rarely reflected on how old I am. There is so much to learn and enjoy. If I ever started thinking about how little time is left, I could become dejected or even bitter. Fuck that!

You are really old if you can remember:

When the ice man (driving a horse drawn wagon) filled your ice box with lake ice.

When you had to wind your victrola in order to hear your favorite record.

Eggs came in a sack rather than a carton.

The milkman brought milk to your door. The cream floated on top of the skim milk.

There was no TV black and white or colored.

There was no plastic.

As old as my tongue and a little bit older than my teeth.

As Gerrard Hoffnung used to say "I was born at an early age- 'cos I wanted to be near my Mother".

As the fiddler on the roof said of his kids "I don't remember growing older, when did they?"

I remember the Old Folks telling me I'd better develop some skill so's I could get a job to fall back on if music didn't work. Funny thing is, I've fallen back on music because the real job didn't work.

I ain't growin' up. Still got long hair, all of it silver and tied up in a ponytail. The ladies, most of 'em still like it, but I notice they're all about my age, too. I been living with my Mother-in-law's daughter for so long, she thinks I was born with long hair and a guitar in my hand, and singing a folksong, like a regular Gypsy Davey.

LEJ, I understand the "Far Out" response. I taught my daughter's 8th grade algebra class. She was so afraid I would embarrass her that she wanted to advise me on what to wear each day. When I finally resisted and told her I'd wear what I wanted, she informed me, "OK, go ahead, everybody will laugh."

Hollowfox, a good friend and I were talking to her mother about how we couldn't work half as hard as our mothers. This lady said the same thing about her mother. Then she remarked, "Guess you girls were just diluted by your fathers' genes."

Kendall and Amos, I'm really enjoying my granddaughter. The funiest thing is when my daughter realizes that I just might know a thing or two about kids. She always leaves Hubby and I with instructions on how to babysit...we can't wait 'til she walks out the door!

Dave, I remember when I was 31 and somebody told me I was closer to 40 than 20. Now things like that just don't seem to matter.
