I owe you an apology "Giok"; you seem an honest unbiased guy. But how can a one prove that one has been discriminated against. Discrimination is always subtle and could be easily argued away as a person not being suitable for a job for one reason or another. The best way to prove that it happens is to look at the religious make-up of a company's employees, much the same way as one does with race and gender, and see if there is a large discepancy in unskilled jobs. Two firms in the Glasgow area stand out among the rest: one is a brewery and the other is a chemical plant. It is common knowledge amongst protestants and catholics in the pubs and clubs of this area who they are.

Also, you're right, I should not have brought the football thing into a serious discussion about religious discrimination. For this I also apologise: these guys were fired up on cheap alcohol and had been at it all day. They are not representative of Scots protestants - many of my friends and relatives are protestant and Rangers' supporters.

I too tend to be bigoted at times as you know!

Thank god we cannot judge the actions of a country by the behaviour of the afficionados of a stupid game like football.
If you are sure of you facts regarding the discrimination on the grounds of religion, then I suggest you take legal action, the mechanism exists to deal with your complaint.

Tell that to the UEFA committee, who are investigating Glasgow Rangers supporters (for asecond time. These fans went to Spain (Osasuna) and chanted "no Pope here" and "Fuck the Pope". They also sang "we're up to our knees in fenian blood" as they attacked the spanish supporters and 'screamed foul' when the Spanish police baton charged them back to civilisation.

As for the assertion that there is no discrimination in Scottish industry, I have personally been told that I was unsuccessful for numerous jobs after they saw that I had gone to an RC school. This is not unusual in present day Scotland. The police force is more representative of the ethnic minorities than Scotttish catholics.

It is illegal in the UK to discriminate against people on the grounds of race colour or creed, and large amounts of money have been paid out by employment tribunals as compensation to those so discriminated against.
Do you think for one minute that with the prospect of large financial penalties for employers, and large payouts for complainants, that the courts wouldn't be bursting at the seams, with all those people you say are being discriminated against.
Unfortunately, discrimination is a two way street, and both sides of the sectarian divide indulge in it. I know that each side take turns at trying to inhabit the moral high ground, but nothing changes really in the minds of those who perpetuate these myths and their attendant bigotry.
I would guess that those who make these accusations don't live in the area, or possibly even the country, and get their information from partisan sources. The sectarian bigotry of today is miniscule compared to what it used to be, and it is getting better slowly.
It is not helped by people throwing out wild accusations, nor by others recounting isolated personal experiences of yesteryear.

Giok

Typical institutional bigot's reply: call everything that points to one's bigotry "rubbish" or, the great Scottish media invention, 'paranoia' and we 'troublemakers' will go away.

Well we won't - were here to stay, so get used to it. In the words of the 60's protest: "The times they are a-changing".

Too much institutionalised sectarian bigotry in Scotland. Many employers still have anti-catholic policies! It's now time to name and shame. No longer should we put up with the "token catholic" for appearnce sake. Scottish Beer Barons are among the worst offenders.

Remove the prejudice - remove the barriers!

Hi Nynia, I take it you grew up in nice safe, West of Scotland, Protestant town; went to a nice, well supplied Protestant school. You don't see yourself as a bigot, but by God you are - and the worst type: you don't even think you are one.

I too grew up in a nice Protestant town, but I was a Catholic. As a child I was regularly called a "Fenian Bastard" long before I knew what either word meant, but I knew they hated me. I was regularly beaten up, coming from school, by older boys from the Protestant school. Even adults called me names when they saw my Celtic scarf.

Don't dare talk about bigotry when you know nothing about it - have never suffered physically or mentally, from it.

I support a team that were formed to looked after the poor Irish, who were treated far worse than I for their religion. We (Celtic) were formed to look after the under dog in society. Any time there was a pit disater or fishing boat lost, Glasgow Celtic were the first to raise funds for the relatives regardless of their religion. Always helping the under dog - the East End Jews, European and Commonwealth Immigrants. But still we are vilified by the Scottish, protestant media and establishment.

There is great need in our time to get rid of the institutional sectarianism that plagues Scottish society. Rangers and Celtic never were the problem - they are both proud football teams. The real problem is the Scottish people's willingness to bury their collective heads in the sand and ignore the sectarian bigots who can ruin a 7 year-old girl,s First Holy Communion by screaming "Fenian Whore" and other obscenities. This crowd of thugs wore Rangers' colours and were off to an Orange Church Parade. What church would want this kind of scum as part of a congregation? Glasgow Rangers were not responsible for these morons - they are a proud club. This incident happened in Maryhill , Glasgow last May.

nYNIA, Tony is right, never in it long history (since 1888) has the Celtic ever had a no-protestant policy, the Rangers however have but I don't think it's a policy today. The great Jock Stein was a non-catholic and he played for and later managed the Celtic.

Sorry Nyinia, but Celtic have never had the policy on not signing a protestant player, RE your input to Antons request on the other thread "...if you know the history" and all that.
Regarding my post on liking any team that beats the H*ns, that was pure banter, Christ my own brother's a H*N!

This was not meant in any way to be a thread that promoted bigotry, and I sincerely hope that it doesn't.

Hi Joe, Sorcha did a pretty good summary there.

What was missed out was that Glasgow Celtic are from an Irish Catholic background, Glasgow Rangers from Protestant.

These sectarian divisions have been with the clubs throughout their history.

For many years Rangers wouldn'd sign a Catholic player and Celtic vice versa.

At various times both clubs have made efforts to distance themselves from this problem, to varying degrees. I admit that Celtic may have made a greater effort in recent years.

Ghirls is new terminology to me, Bhoys however, refers to both the players and supporters of Celtic F.C. The supporters should be able to tell you the history of the term, I presume it's something to do with Irish pronounciation but I may well be wrong on that, I'm just guessing.

Joe, from what I have found out looking for the song, bhoys is a term used for the team members of the Glasgow Celtics, whose arch rival is the Glasgow Rangers, both "football", ie, soccer teams. Bhoys and Ghirls is also used to denote fans of the Celtics. From what Nynia says, this is probably the biggest rivalry in sports. Huns is a derogatory name for the the Rangers.........I know that Soccer games can get really ugly, fan wise.

Well, I feel kinda stupid, which is a feeling I get rather often nowadays. I thought "Bhoy" and "Ghirl" were just somebody trying to be cute about asking how many malesd and how many females there were at Mudcat, one of a string of "How Many Mudcatters..." threads. But here I see it has something to do with football and ethnic bigotry.

Could somebody explain it to this poor, innocent, uncosmopolitan soul from California? Wuzza "bhoy"? Wuzza "ghirl"?

Sorcha, one thing all the guy/girls will tell you is that, from your examples, you really "ain't seen nothing yet". Rangers/Celtic rivalry beats any inter-team rivalry anywhere in the world. Bill Shankly famously said that football isn't a matter of life and death, it's far more important than that. The Old Firm have taken even that to extremes. Fatalities linked to this rivalry are thankfully a lot less common these days, but are still far from unheard of. US Football and World Cup games are simply no comparison to make.

I know, Nyn, but I really think it is just "fan" stuff.....we don't know how many of them are really bigoted, and fans can get pretty rabid about their fave teams........I don't follow UK football (soccer) but I know US football fans can get ugly, and from what I have seen of World Soccer Cup matches, they can get REALLY ugly, fan-wise.

How very un-bigoted of him to say so. I'm sure you'll agree it's the kind of comment we all love to read.

Nynia, I have no idea which of you is correct, but originally this was sort of a companion thread to a lyric request for a Celtics fans song. It was finally (!) answered by the Brand New Member, LYRIC, who posted the lyrics to Four Leaf Clover in the other thread. I wonder if Guest, Anton ever came back and got them? He didn't leave an e mail, that I could see.

LYRIC is also offering to share other songs, if you noticed his (?) post above. Very good job, LYRIC, and I hope Anton finds his words.

How many of the above were bigoted????? Oh come on Tony. The reference to IRA chants is applicable to 90% of the Celtic support as would anti-Catholic chants be applicable to the same percentage of Rangers fans. Bhoys against bigotry was a fine idea, but has never been adequately persued. As a non Old Firm supporter (Stranraer) I can attest from personal first-hand experience that both are as bad as each other. Although it was only at Celtic Park that we had paper cups of Urine thrown over us. I see that Lyric has a ROI e-mail address, why does he support a Scottish team, perhaps he should be supporting his local Irish team.

Nynia,
I'm sorry if you're offended by the thread. The question was asked out of curiosity more than anything else.
As for hearing "Celtic scum support" chanting Pro IRA chants at the match, this does not include all Celtic supporters, but alas there remains that small minority of F**kin' Arseholes that give the honest supporter the bad name.
As for myself, being the product of an Irish Catholic father and a Scottish Protestant mother, I was brought up to respect people regardless of Race, Creed or Colour. It is something that has been instilled in me and I hope that I become successful in passing this down to MY children.
In place now, and for the past few 5 yrs thanks to "Fergus the bunnet" bigotry is being stamped out at CP. Take a look at the songs and poems that have been listed by Lyric, How many of these are bigoted. The fourth and fifth entries should should be interesting to read!
I disagree with neither Celtic or Rangers having nothing to do with Football or Religion. Religion will always be a factor because of how the clubs were founded, Brother Walfred et al. As for the football, well then again, the Teddy Bears haven't played much this season!
mvh Tony

Thanks Joe, much obliged.
TC

May I remind you that just three days after the Omagh bombing in 1998, Celtic played Dundee in a game shown live across Europe on Sky Sports. All you could hear from the Celtic scum support throughout the match was sectarian Pro-IRA chants. What a humane testimony to the dead, they weren't even cold yet, thank you guys. Make no mistake Rangers are almost as bad. Neither team has anything to do with either football or religion. Why have you brought you bigotry to this website?

Now in a good position to a win the treble - I hope thats not the kiss of death.
