I'm just an adopted Yorkshire lass - but we Geordies are even madder!

I presume loup means jump or leap? And does ling mean heather? So is a ling louper someone who goes fell walking???

Just a wild guess.

I like Scarboro. We have a friend who lives there. Born in Scalby. D'ye know the Indigo Alley pub or the Citrus Cafe? We went there last summer. Rode the train out to North Bay, had a drink at the pub and took the bus back to South Bay. Had a very good time. Probably be back next summer.
The Yorkies are mad but it's a fun madness.

Maggie and Les - both from Yorkshire - both mad. Mrs Duck's right - you must be mad to leave Yorkshire. Come to Whitby at New Year and see Yorkshire at its maddest.

Geoff and Mrs Duck even have a daughter called Maddy. How mad can you get?

I was born in Pudsey (Where t'ducks fly backways on and they rake t'moon out o' t'pond!), but my birth certificate shows not only my mother's and father's name (thus scotching THAT rumour) but the stamp of the "Registration District of Wharfedale". So, not only a Yorkie, but a Dalesman.

The Lady Elizabeth was born in Halifax (District of Calderdale), but we met in London, and we have lived the 30 years of our married life in Essex or thereabouts.

We insisted on writing to our relations in the West Riding of Yorkshire long after bureaucrats decreed that it should be conflated to West Yorkshire. As both our children were girls, we didn't bother going back for the births, as neither was likely to play cricket.

You can take the Yorkie out of the county, but not the county out of the Yorkie.

Mad - maybe, but happy mad.

When a Yorkshireman admits to madness, it is meiosis.

When a Lancastrian calls a Yorkshireman mad, it's WAR!

Lancastrians live, shrouded in mist and rain, on the distaff side of the Pennines. They can't help it, poor things!

Hang on! Some time back we trawled through the Three Wise Men of Gotham (Notts) where one of my great-grannys came from. Now, with that heritage, (which includes a moonraking story among many others), another granny reputedly born in Halifax (no proof, but she definitely WAS born) of Irish stock, and with me, Derbyshire born, living in Yorkshire for 13 years - will I be mad enough? Does the fact that I can usually understand a Yorkshire dialect help?

Andrea

Derbyshire folk also lay claim to "strong i'th'arm and wick i'th'ead". "Wick" means "quick" - so there!

And yes. All Yorkshiremen are mad. That's why us Lancastrians walk round with 2 short planks under our arms - to demonstrate the density of our easterm neighbours....

Lancashire moonrakers are charlatans and frauds. Real Moonrakers come from Wiltshire, any person of Wiltshire origin is known as a Moonraker, the county tie of Wiltshire, which I wear, features a Moonraker on it. Obviously Lancashire has so little history and legend of its own it has to appropriate stories from more interesting counties.

Dave the Gnome, we might have to settle this like Gentlemen, with rakes at dawn!

Ah - but Greyeyes (are they btw - grey that is?), even if I concede I reckon you would still be hard pushed to beat our 'cow-yed' (cow head) story from Westhoughton, Nr Bolton. Westhoughteners have been called cow-yeds ever since a local farmer, on finding his cows head stuck through a wrought iron railing decided to resolve the issue by sawing off the cows head....

Should I realy be arguing that Lancy folks are more stupid than Wilty ones|:-?

Hmmmm...I'm a Geordie lass with a half Yorkshire, half Nottingham, half London accent and no mathematical ability at all, which must make me even worse. Especially if you consider that I have lived near Newcastle for all 13 years of my life, picked up the Yorkshire accent from over-exposure to drunk people at Folkworks summerschool (making it rather odd) and still haven't lost it. I chant Norange Norange Norange Norange Brape Troozers Bisghetti at irregular intervals and I currently claim to be a flannel. I also appear to be expressing desires to play the bassoon and recruit people to be called Richard. Mad enough?

Gah! Daft buggers the lot of youse! Yorkshire girl meself, moonraking happens in SLAITHWAITE (pron. Slaowit) near HOLMFIRTH - (who incidentally have a nice folk festival, mostly based around The Nook pub) also for t'benefit of all youse southern softies, Holmfirth is where they film Last of the Summer Wine. Fun festival type stuff for the moonraking happens in the Sair pub in Slaithwaite, danicing music and singing - lovely.

And just remember, 50% of people are mad, 50% think they are mad and the other 50% just pass the pickled herring.
