Got any Gems of wisdom to pass on to an 18 year old boy on the occasion of his birthday.

Take your time, gettin' older ain't all what it's cracked up to be, If I would'a known I was gonna last this long, I'd have taken alot better care of myself. When ya get to be my age,It'll take you all night long, just to accomplish what you used to do all night long. There you have all the wise sayings that my father passed down to me, I in turn passed on to my boys, and will probably have to pass on to my grandchildren as well, considering the smirks and cross ways looks and rolling of eyes, I have recieved by way of thanks. I wasn't ever like that when I was their age!....was I???? Peace,-Biskit-

90% of everything is crap. - Theodore Sturgeon There is nothing more dangerous than stupid people in large groups. Don't do too good a job; people will come to expect it. Save the basket.

That last comes from my parents. A Chinese man was carrying his old father on his back in a large basket, when his young son saw him and asked what he was doing. The man said, "Your grandfather is old and feeble and blind, and his life is no good to him or anyone else any more. As an act of filial kindness, I am carrying him to the river, where I will let him drown and put him out of his misery. I hope this doesn't distress you too much, son." The son replies, "That's fine, father. Save the basket."

Super Grover (from Sesame Street) once flew to the rescue of a little girl in a zoo. when she wanted to leave, she only saw the fence and no way to get out. Super Grover obliged her by taking the next half an hour to bend the bars of the gate to let her out. As he did this, she found the sign that said, "EXIT" and thanked 'ol Supe as she left. By the time Super Grover was done sweating over the bars, she was gone...

The moral is: We must trust God for the impossible, like providing a way out of a jam for us... But we must not expect God to do the possible... We must do what is possible (read the sign) before asking Him to bend the bars...

A machine shop teacher long ago told me something that has stuck with me longer than any of the other bullshit I heard growing up. He said "To be succesful in setting up a job on a machine, and also in life, it takes 90 percent imgination and 10 percent knowhow. If you can think it, you can do it!" Thanks to Mr. Dave Hankey, 11th Grade Machine Practices, circa 1965, I have accomplished much!

One of my favourites, a motto of sorts in my life -

Nothing in this world can be accomplished without passion.

Also:

Be kind, and if you can't be kind, be polite.

Ordeals and sudden laughter - Take joy in all.

Never let anyone take your innocence from you. No matter what they say, you only lose it when you give it up.

If I told him all this stuff he would probably reply "Yeah yeah dad, whatever" or something like that.

I have nothing to pass on to him but my example, good or bad. He's a great kid - er, make that adult - with all of his life ahead of him. I'm insanely jealous!

Cheers, Terry

No matter what you do, there will be those who don't approve of it. So might as well do what you really want to.

Be yourself, and you will have no competition. Just try to get closer and closer to that essence.

My mom's words of wisdom for the parents of eighteen year olds is "just because they tell you they're not listening doesn't mean that they didn't hear you say it."

My own take on this, recently, to a nineteen year old nephew, is that the difference between nineteen and forty isn't intelligence, it's experience. The forty year old has already pulled that dumb stunt and remembers how not to do it again.

At least, most forty year olds. [grin]
