Subject: Counter melodies to be sung
From: Gloria Tham

Hi there everyone, I need some help looking for simple songs that can be sung together. I know there is a counter melody to the chorus of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" found in some elementary music educators texts. (Sadly I left mine at college.. yes, yes I'm going back).

I have to get a group of untrained singers to sing 2 songs by the end of July and thought this might be interesting to them...something familiar yet different.

Any help and suggestions of songs will be most sincerely appreciated. Thanx :) Gloria

"Humoresque" and "Swanee River" is always fun, except I don't know any clean words to Humoresque. I believe there are some somewhere, though.

Many years ago, I heard Bill Keith play the two on the 5-string banjo at the same time. I swear I am not making this up.

Peter.

How about "Rock-A-My-Soul" with "Good News, Chariots-a-Coming" at the same time?? It's REALLY easy...and FUN!

You could also try some simple rounds - easy to learn, and not too difficult to manage, but producing a very nice effect

These aren't simple, and can't be used everywhere...

Gesu Bambino and O Come All Ye Faithful
Stephen Foster's Massa's in the Cold, Cold Ground and
Willie Nelson's Faded Love
The Wine Song (commercial from several years back) and
Tennessee Waltz

Surely there must be a million, but I can't think of any more.

Mary

What about "Rose, Rose"? It doesn't have a counter melody but all three parts are sung together. Ditto "Fish and Chips and Vinegar." "Tommy Tinker", "Bright coral bells," "One dark night" are rounds.

What's the approximate age range of the singers? Have they sung together before? How many voices? Have you trained in conducting or teaching music?

CH.

Thanks to everyone.. I've noted your ideas.. keep them coming.. I like rounds a lot but would like to keep the options for counter melody stuff. Cos, there'll be a different group I'll need to help after I finish with the current one.

Yeah CH, I am trained in music and have taught school choirs before. My main area of study is the piano and voice is my secondary instrument. They are about 14-17 yrs old, don't think they've sung together much before except for the national anthem ;)

Another old singaround favourite is to get half the audience singing "Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag" while the other half sings "It's a long way to Tipperary".

For very young singers, though, traditional rounds, with their simple tunes and memorable lyrics, are still favourite. Try "Fre\re Jaques" (they can learn a bit of French at the same time), or "Heigh Ho! Nobody Home!". But I wouldn't recommend "Three Blind Mice", in case you get picketed by animal rights activists.

Wassail!
