TerriM - I trust that this acquaintance is not one that I know as well?

We have a set of French bagpipes here (bellows, pink bag and faint aroma of garlic) which I'm dying to get rid off, if you want, in exchange for the guinness tie back again.....

And the chanter is the bit you blow in, stuck to the bit with the holes in, minus the bag and the dead octopus bits tied up with ribbon. Much quieter and better for learning the tunes - learning to control the bag is a lot harder and should only be attempted whilst wearing suitable surgical appliances.

Mbo - looking better than Micca in a kilt is not really difficult, especially when worn with the wine stained shirt and the dodgy sporran......

(sorry!)

I haven't read the thread, but I can offer this... Some chums of mine have invented an electronic chanter that makes a great practice tool (sounds like crap in their live show though)... might be a good place to start so as to learn the fingering without having to bust a gut huffing on a chanter or deaffining the neighbours.. The are also cheaper than a set of highland pipes...

Send email or personal message if interested and I can try to get you in touch with them...

Well, there are certainly some "kilt" images to conjure on this thread.......Micca, Banj, Meebo, El Swanno, Mick (with spuds), Kendall.................geez..................and here I was about to eat supper.

I once heard a story about a fella with a prosthetic member, in a kilt, and spuds, but I'm not sure this is the right place to go into that...

Spaw - Not quite. Actually, I'm kinda surprised you don't know the story I'm referring too.
Like I said, I'm not sure this is the place to relate it, but the thread title is kinda provoking...

So much derogatory stuff about the bagpipes, it makes me wonder. If there were suddenly no other musical instruments, would you all let music DIE, or takeup the pipes? I know what I'd do. Probably quit smoking.

Isn't the fingering for a bagpipe chanter the same as the fingering for a tin whistle? If so, the time spent learning to play the whistle wouldn't be wasted if you later take up the bagpipes. And, of course, whistles are much cheaper, quieter, easier, more easily portable, and fit in better with a wide range of other instruments and styles of music.

Terri, if there's any chance at all that your friend will take your advice, I would try to steer him toward the whistle. You could even buy him one. You could tell him that all the great bagpipe players started out on the whistle (which probably isn't true, but it's a forgivable lie, IMHO).

Reminds me of the two ladies who came across a drunken piper lying by the side of the road. These two English ladies wanted to know the truth about the Scots not wearing anything under their kilts, so they lifted up the kilt and found out the truth. Laughing about the situation they wanted the piper to know that he had been checked over, so one tied a blue ribbon around his privates. When the piper awoke he looked down and was heard to say.. " I dinna ken where ye've been laddie, but I'm reet glad tay see ye won first prize" Yours, Aye. Dave

I believe that tin whistle and bagpipes have different fingering. I had a friend that was bent on learning to play and was showing me his chanter one day. I picked it up and tried to play a scale expecting it to be the same as tin whistle, but was informed I had the fingerings wrong. What he showed me as being the correct fingerings had some of the bottom holes covered while leaving the upper holes open.

I've already, and in vain, tried to persuade him toward the tin whistle or the recorder or anything damn thing really but he is convinced he'd make a great piper and he has the knees to prove it ( dunno about the spuds, though, should I ask do you think?).Loved the joke about the drunk piper... the only time I ever got to see up a piper's kilt ( long story, won't bore you with it now) he was wearing army drawers ( cellular, soldiers, for the use of) which was a sad and bitter blow! Liz, the guy is Kevin who was at my 40th birthday party, but then so was everyone else so I don't know if you met him.

No, tine whistle only have 6 holes, but have 2 octaves. Pipes have 9 holes I believe (yeaI play, but who remembers these thing?) and only has one note over an octave.
