My son's teacher came out to hear me at Sat.'s gig, and asked if I'd do a 1 hour presentation for folks songs, as relating to American history...I can't make up my mind (too many choices!)...what I need are suggestions for:

(A) Pre-Colonial Period

(B) Colonial Period

(C) Revolutionary War

(D) Post-Revolutionary Period

(E) Civil War

(F) Turn of Century

(G) WWI

(H) WWII

Thanks in advance for your suggestions...

Lesley's Site has many songs of American history already grouped by time period. You could probably find many that you know and love. I vote for Tenting On the Old Campground for the Civil War era. She also has lots of links and info so you could explain a little about each song.

1 hour???That's an all day format! I'd try to just pick one representative song of each era, with the exception of the War Between the States, you'd need 2 there, just to even things out. Holy Mudcats! Too many choices! Maybe she'd (?) like to have you a couple times a week?

Actually, I'm doing the program 4 times that day...and you're right about it really needs a lot more time, but that's the format...

Thanks for all the assistance...will post response from the little munchkins afterwards!

Sounds like a fun project. The link above is a great site, by the way!

I hope you (and they) enjoy it. Good luck!

What will the munchkins learn from a program themed with war? I'd like to see kids absorbing history from a sense of what it was like to live, what was eaten, the nature of work, the nature of play or more accurately the lack of time for it...

Would such an approach be permitted?

Make sure you include "Passing Through." "Yankee, Russian, White or Tan, Lord a Man is just a Man. We're all brothers and we're only passing through."

Would be a good closing song.

For Civil War, what about a medley of "Rally "Round the Flag" (Yankee) and "Bonny Blue Flag." (Rebel)

What about focussing on something other than war-the Great Depression, the Civil Rights movement, the rise of the unions, immigration-there are lots of other topic areas you could focus on besides wars. The shifts from an agricultural to an industrial to an information-based economy/lifestyle.

Thank you Marymac90. It'll be interesting to see if there is more acknowledgement of your post than mine.

I didn't read that as necessarily war being the theme, more as a way of splitting up periods. And of course songs around a war aren't just songs about the fightig, they're about what's happenimg in between the fighting, and back home. You could say Little Women is the best book about the American Civil War.

"Carry it On" by Pete Seeger and Bob Reiser is the best song-and-picture book about American history I've ever seen. And it's got a good bibliography as well.

The time periods are not so much war-themed as simply a time "divisory"...

Will subtly attempt to influence the little monkeys away from Rap, violence and the dreaded Republican Menace, tho...
