Elizabeth Block sang a beautiful lullabye titled "Yankele." I hope she will post the lyrics. Martha Schlamme also sang it.

from Elizabeth:

YANKELE
(by Mordecai Gebirtig, English translation by Elizabeth Block)

Go to sleep, my Yankele, my baby,
Hush your crying, close your little eyes.
A big boy who has all his teeth already,
Should mama need to sing him lullabies?

A big boy who has all his teeth already,
Who'll be going off to school by and by,
Studying the Torah and Gemarah,
When his mama rocks him, should he cry?

A big boy who'll be studying the Torah,
An honour student, diligent and bright,
Who'll fill his daddy's heart with pride and pleasure,
Should he keep his mama up all night?

A big boy who will be an honour student,
A scholar and a merchant also, yet,
A bridegroom who will make some nice girl happy,
Should this boy be lying here all wet?

Go to sleep, my merchant, scholar, bridegroom,
The years you'll be a baby are so few.
So many mama's tears, such time and trouble
'Twill cost to make a mensch out of you!

DER ZINGER VUN NOYT
(Mordecai Gebirtig)

Oy oremer narisher zinger,
Bist noch ir dain fach nit genit,
Du krichst nor in gvirishe hoifn,
Tsi hot dort an opklang dain lid?

Un vilst oif dain zingen mevinim,
Un gelt oich fardinen darbai?
Gei zuch zei in oreme heiflech,
Dort sing daine lidlech far zei.

Un zing zei dos lidl fun elent,
Di troirike lidl fun noit,

Vu s'huliet der malech fun toit.

Yo, zing zei di troirike lidlech,
Zei zainen geshafn far zei,
Dain lidele vet dort bagleitn
A hilchiker yomer geshrei

Poor foolish, misguided musician,
Don't you know where to sing and to play?
You hang round the rich people's houses,
To them you have nothing to say.

It's true, there the critics will hear you,
And money they'll pay for your song,
But leave them, and go to the poor folk,
To them does your music belong.

And sing them your songs of their sorrows,
You'll find your true audience here,
In the courtyards of dusty dark houses,
Where the angel of death hovers near.

For poor folk your songs were created,
Songs of trouble, of need so sore,
Songs that transform into music
The heartbroken cries of the poor.

Mordecai Gebirtig
English version by Elizabeth Block
(Note: mevinim is the plural of maven = critic, expert)

The lyrics above are the ones of "Yankele"
Now here is a longer version of "Der Zinger Vun Noyt" that I found on page 48 of this MS Word document.

Now could anyone post the full lyrics in Latin alphabet and a translation of the song?

Subject: ADD: Noch a Glezele Tey (Mordecai Gebirtig)
From: Felipa
Date: 10 Aug 21 - 08:51 PM

a song posted elsewhere in Mudcat by Joe Fineman :

"In the Yiddish song "NOCH A GLEZELE TEY" (Another Little Cup of Tea) by M. Gebirtig, the husband & pregnant wife are arguing over whose side of the family to name the baby after. After a good deal of sarcasm & indignation, the wife says, there's no point in arguing -- I'm going to name him after my grandfather. The husband says, right, there's no point in arguing -- maybe it will be twins (both girls)."

NOCH A GLEZELE TEY
Words & music by M. Gebirtig

Berele mayn libinker, ch'ob tus dir a bakoshe.
-- Perele mayn libinke, vos iz day bakoshe?
-- Ven mit mazl ich vel hobn a yingele in freydn,
Vil ich undzer kind zol heysn noch may frumen zeydn.
-- Farvos epis noch dayn zeydn? Ch'ob doch oych a deye.
Host doch ersht gehat a meydl noch dayn bobe leye.

Berele, mayn manele, ch'vil dich epes dermonen.
-- Perele, mayn vaybele, vos vilstu mich dermonen?
-- Du fargest, az undzer leybke heyst shoyn noch dayn zeydn,
Farvos kloybstu zich di yungen, varfst mir tsu di meydn?

Berele, mayn tayerer, ch'vil dir epes zogn.
-- Perele, mayn tayere, vos vilstu mir zogn?
-- Vos-zhe darf men itst zich krign, lomir nor delebn,
Vel ich davke noch mayn zeydn s'kind a nomen gebn.
-- Vos-zhe take itst zich grign, un umzist tsu reydn,
Efsher vet gor zayn a tsviling -- s'ken gor zayn tsvey meydn.

Translation:

Berele, my dear, I've a favor to ask of you.
-- Perele, my darling, what is it you want?
With God's will, when I give birth to a little boy,
I'd like to name him after my pious grandfather.
-- After your grandfather? It seems to me
That we just named one of our girls after your grandmother Leah.

Berele, dear husband, let me remind you now
-- Perele, dear wife, what do you wish to remind me of?
You forgot that our son Leybke bears _your_ grandfather's name.
Why do you pick all the boys and leave the girls for me?
-- But you forget that our Nochem was named after _your_ father.
Perhaps that's why he's not so smart, since he takes after him.

Berele, my dear one, I want to tell you something.
-- Perele, my darling, what do you want to say?
-- Why must we quarrel now? We might as well wait,
Since I intend to name the child after my grandfather anyway.
-- True, there's no point in arguing so much ahead of time.
Perhaps it will be twins at that, and both of them girls.

Daniel Kahn, Der Zinger Fun Noty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdP8_fO8Iv4
There is also a comment with that video giving transliteration lyrics from
http://www.klesmer-musik.de/der_zinger_fun_noyt.htm. Perhaps you would like to see how they compare with what we already have. There are six verses so they may correspond with the Yiddish lyrics (Hebrew alphabet) posted by Monique. Verses 2 and 4 were not in Elizabeth Block's version.

??? ?????? ??? ???

        DER SINGER FUN NOYT

German language translation

       Oh armer närrischer Singer,
bist in deinem Fach noch nicht geübt.
Du kriechst nur in reiche Höfe,
findet dein Lied dort Anklang ?

        Original text in transliterated script:

Joe, Could you move the link to a recording of NOCH A GLEZELE TEY to just below the lyrics, so that it's clear which song it refers to? In the comment in which I shared Joe Fineman's transcription, I also mentioned gave links to lyrics of two other Gerbirtig songs.

1.

1.
It's burning, brothers, it's burning!
Oy, our poor shtetl is burning,
Raging winds are fanning the wild flames
And furiously tearing,
Destroying and scattering everything.
All around, all is burning

Refrain
And you stand and look just so, you
With folded hands...
And you stand and look just so,
While our shtetl burns.

2.
It's burning, brothers, it's burning!
Oy, our poor shtetl is burning,
The moment is at hand when, God forbid,
Our town, along with all of us,
Will be turned to ashes by the flames,
And only bare, black walls will remain
As after a battle.

3.
Our town is burning,
And only you can save it!
Extinguish the fire with your very blood,
If you must!

4.
Don't just stand there, brothers,
With folded hands.
Don't stand there, put out the fire!
Our shtetl is burning!

Translation from Favorite Yiddish Songs, complied by E.G.Mlotek
c.1972 Adama Books

I prefer to write 's brent rather than s' brent, because the missing letter comes before the s (es = it).

There is also a transliteration and translation by Mindle Crystel Gross at http://www.hebrewsongs.com/song-esbrent.htm

Es Brent sung by Emanuel Elbinger standing outside the building where Mordechai Gebirtig once lived.

Do you realise this compilation has potential for being as long as a book (and that one or probably more compilations of Gebirtig's verse have already been published)?

TRANSLATION

O, good klezmer, take your fiddle in hand,
And play for me the song of the Golden Land….
Once upon a time, my mother used to sing me
This song with great feeling. O, play it for me, play!

When I hear the song, it seems
That my dear mother is hovering over me.
Her lovely figure, her tender glance—
They awaken my childhood happiness.

When I hear the song, I suddenly see
My mother. She’s preparing my cradle for me
And I feel on my forehead her slender hand—
She sings me the song of the Golden Land.

“Once there was in a Golden Land
A clever only son, a beautiful diamond,”
She sings, and the clock’s pendulum ticks,
And the cradle rocks -
Ay lyu lyu lyu.

performed by Passage Klezmer

DOS LIDL FUN DEM GOLDENEM LAND
