Powerful song.

RISE AGAIN (WE RISE AGAIN)

(Leon Dubinsky 1985)

As sung by the the Rankin Family 1993

When the waves roll on over the waters
And the ocean cries.
We look to our sons and daughters
To explain our lives
As if a child could tell us why.

That as sure as the sunrise
As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees.

We rise again in the faces of our children.
We rise again in the voices of our song.
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean,
And then we rise again.

When the light goes dark with the forces of creation
Across a stormy sky.
We look to reincarnation to explain our lives.
As if a child could tell us why.

That as sure as the sunrise
As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees.

We rise again in the faces of our children.
We rise again in the voices of our song.
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean,
And then we rise again.

We rise again in the faces of our children.
We rise again in the voices of our song.
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean,
And then we rise again.

And then we rise again.

NOTES:

The Rankin Family is a Canadian musical family group.
They hail from Mabou, province of Nova Scotia
(the same province as Rita MacNeil -
see elsewhere in this ILP database for her work).

The original group of five were made up from twelve siblings,
all of whom were musically talented. The first group started
singing in 1970. They performed Celtic music as well as jigs
and reels.

They won a number of Canadian music awards. Sadly, many of
the members from the original group, passed relatively
early in life. Raylene passed Sept 30 2012.

There's also a recording by Australian singer Kate Delaney, on her album, A Moment in Time.

I looked on Spotify (as I usually do) for a recording of this song, and what I found was called

RISE AGAIN – 2008 SEQUEL, recorded by The Rankin Family on "These Are the Moments" (2009).

However, the words are identical to those posted by Joe Offer above, so apparently it's just a new recording and new arrangement of the same song (although that's not what the word "sequel" suggests to me).

You can hear what I believe is the original 1993 recording on YouTube.

The Vancouver BC Mens chorus Chor Leoni has done a beautiful rendition of this on U-tube,

Somehow when I see "Rise again" and "Canadian" I'll have to think of Stan Rogers.

I'll get me coat...
