Yeah, we used to do this in the 1990s with primitive technology. Now it's so easy. I think we need to keep this going forever.

I hope everybody who wanted email notification of Monday's singaround, got it. If you didn't get an email from me and wanted one, please email me, joe@mudcat.org - but you probably won't get one tomorrow, because I won't have time to deal with email. I teach a class on Monday that ends at the exact time I open the doors for the singaround.

I'll post the link a couple of hours before the singaround, but I don't want to post it too early because of the nuisance of Zoom bombing. See y'all tomorrow,

-Joe-

Hi Joe, hope to be there tomorrow nght, but I have to go to a zoom committee meeting before hand - because AGMs have been postponed/cancelled, I haven't found a way of getting out of this one. I will probably arrive about 10:00pm my time.

Vikki, your multi-lingual lyrics reminds me of a version we collectively wrote in the Shanty Crew when we were kicking our heels in our hotel after we had fininshed our afternoon sets and waiting for the pub to open for the evening session at Lancaster Maritime Festrival. That one was a bit x-rated referring to 'Sheep in galoshes and nuns in black leather' and the instrumental bridge between the verses 'Nudge nudge nudge, wink wink wink' - referring to Monty Python.

And here are the words for my UK vs US English parody of "My Favorite Things", as a number of people seemed interested. (I've posted it in a Mudcat thread before now, but I've revised it since then, so might as well share the updated version.)

Below the lyrics, I've added a glossary, for those who may not be familiar with all the terms.

Don’t Know the Words... (for My FavoUrite Things)
TTO: Rodger & Hammerstein’s My Favorite Things
New words: Vikki Appleton Fielden

Jelly is jam here, and jello is jelly
The car has a boot and my foot wears a wellie
Mention “sultanas”, I think "Eastern Kings"
Don’t know the words for my favourite things

Summat is not where you go when you’re climbing
Jumper is not someone into sky diving
Bob is Your uncle, the Beeb is your aunt
Don’t know the words to explain what I want

If my languish causes anguish; if you think me sad
Oh, won’t you remember I’m just a poor Yank,
and that’s why I talk... so bad

Beer’s sold by landlords instead of bartenders
Don’t tell the clerk that your man needs suspenders
Braces are not always worn on your teeth
Rubber is nothing to do with a sheath

I stand in line; over here it’s called queueing
Lines are engaged but they never need wooing
You stop while five while I stay until four
Knob isn’t always a thing on a door

If I speak, luv, like a freak, luv; if you think me mad
Oh, won’t you remember I’m just a poor Yank,
and that’s why I talk... so bad

Biscuits are sweet but a tart can be racy,
a Nice bit o’ crumpet might wear something lacy
Crackers are not always eaten with cheese
Folks don’t wear flannels but you can wear fleece

Chips come with haddock; and crisps in a packet
Soccer is football and baseball’s not cricket
Stockings have ladders and Cricket has runs
Baps is the word for my favourite buns

If you’re thinkin’ I’ve been drinkin’; if I seem a cad
Oh, won’t you remember I’m just a poor Yank,
and that’s why I talk... so bad

Two pints of bitter was not a bad notion
Held up two fingers and caused a commotion
I didn’t quack but you called me a duck
Muffler’s not something to quiet a truck

You call me luv; I don’t know who you are, pet
But when I say shag, ducks, I only mean carpet
Met a cute bloke at the Anchor & Bull
Kept my hands off him but he said I pulled

I get confused but I can’t ask my granny
My knickers are knackered and show off my f...reckles
You can go barking though you’re not a dog,
Everyone goes to the loo in a swamp... (um, bog!)

If my diction causes friction; if I’m misconstrued
Oh, won’t you remember I’m just a poor Yank,
and that’s why I talk... so rude!

Here are the words for the EU Anthem I sang at yesterday's session (I've also added them to the "National Anthems" thread):

ODE TO JOY
(new words ©Vikki Fielden, 15/1/19)

Let us sing in celebration
Of a union strong and free
Though we are of many nations
Europeans proud are we

As we join in joint endeavour
Let us strive for truth and peace
As our nations work together
May our friendships never cease

Let us sing in celebration
Of a union strong and free
Though we are of many nations
Europeans proud are we

Grant us grace, that we may we live our
Lives in peace and unity
And in future we may give our
Children hope and harmony

Let us sing in celebration
Of a union strong and free
Though we are of many nations
Europeans proud are we
Though we are of many nations
Europeans proud are we

Glad you could make it, JennieG!

Here's the verse I wrote to add to John Broomhall's song, Time is a Tempest:

First came the bushfires, then came the virus.
The year twenty-twenty is sure going to tire us!
Thank Heaven the Mudcat is here to inspire us
To sing the chorus again.

Joe asked me for the words to the version of Boy and the Mantle (Child #29) that I sang. The one in the Digital Tradition is the long version from Percy. I played with it quite a bit to get a singable version, most of the word editing was from Allan Taylor. I did not like his tune, so I asked Dick Greenhaus to give some tunes it would sing to and selected one. Here is my version:

BOY AND THE MANTLE

IN the third month of the year, to Carlisle did come
A gentle and a courteous child, that knew much wisdom
God speed thee, King Arthur, sitting at thy meat
And the goodly Queen Guenever, I cannot her forget.

I have with me a mantle no lady can resist
But it shall ne’er become that wife that once has done amiss
But if she be unfaithful, in tatters it shall fall
And if she be honest, she will brighten any hall

And first there came Queen Guenever, for she should lead the way
But if she was surely in great doubt, she did not say
And then she took the mantle as if she had been a maid:
Suddenly from the top to the toe it loosely fell in shreds.

And then it colored brightest red, and then it colored green
And then it colored darkest black, so ill did her beseem
And then upspoke King Arthur, and angrier he grew
By all the knights in this court, I think thou be not true

She threw down the mantle, for all the court to see;
And blushed as red as roses, and to her room did flee.
Sir Kay called forth his lady, and bade her to come near;
And said, if thou be guilty, I pray thee hold thee there

So forth came his lady so bold she did appear
And likewise was embarrassed and cried for all to hear
And likewise all the gentle knights who thought their wives most true
Commanded them to try it on and bitterly did rue

Then there came a faded knight, Sir Craddock was his name
And all the knights of Arthur’s court, of him had sport and game
Win this mantle, lady, and it shall all be thine,
If thou ever did amiss, the shame it shall be mine.

When his lady took the mantle his lady cast it her about,
Bow down, good mantle, and shame me not for nought.
For once I did but one amiss, I’ll tell you certainly,
For once I lay in Craddock’s bed before he married me.

When she had made confession, and all her sins she had told;
The mantle stood about her in bright array she stood
So seemly of color, and glittering like gold:
Then all the knights about this court her beauty did behold.
So Craddock stood in glory, his lady proven true
All the knights in Arthur’s court have surely got their due

Printed in Percy's Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, vol III
version sung by Allan Taylor to a different tune than I use
Child #29

Susan, here's my non-expert advice on how to get started;

Put Zoom.us in your URL box. (Note the dot after Zoom)

Fill in your e-mail address.

Click on "sign up for free"

Follow the prompts down the rabbit hole. What you are doing is setting up a free Zoom account for yourself so you can call and join meetings in the future.

It worked for me.
====================

When it's time for the sing-a-round, get your camera, microphone and earphones (if any) plugged in and ready.

When it's 8 pm in London and 3 pm in New York, a link to the session will appear here. Copy the link into your URL box, and it will take you to the session. Click 'join with audio' or something like that.
It's pretty clear what to do. This is one hour before the official start, but people like to chat.

The sessions are pretty long, so don't worry if you miss the start. I plan to be there.

I would love to join in, but geez......5 a.m. is stupid dark early o'clock here, being in winter as we currently are. Besides which, who has a singing voice at that hour? Not me, for sure; I'm not a morning person at the best (or the worst) of times.

But I know how to Zoom. We have a family trivia quiz every Sunday evening on Zom with our son, DIL and The One And Only Grandkid, and son's in-laws, all of whom live two days' drive away. DIL is a music teacher so has been using Zoom with her pupils.

Hi Joe

Thanks for another great session. My apologies for being dogged with tech problems last night - a combination of my pc freezing, and slowing down a few times (robot in a tin box syndrome!) and internet destabilising. While it is frustrating when this happens, it can be amusing watching the feed catch up, a bit like fast forwards on a DVD player.

I have been enjoying on line sessions - this one and others in UK, and I think I must be close to singing more times than all the 12 years since I left the Shanty Crew combined - I think I am even beginning to get the power in my voice back (a year ago I would have struggled to get to the end of a song before my voice starts cracking up). Just need to work on my memory as I seem to be forgetting the odd line of everything I used to do.

Yes, it’s Zoom. Install it before you first need it. Make sure your mic and camera are switched on, then sit back and wait for the link to be posted! Simples....

How does this work? I just got a camera for my computer. Do I need to download anything? Is it Zoom? What do I need to do?

Yes that’s right Amergin, for security reasons the new link is only put up about an hour before the start each week, so less likely to attract gatecrashers.

I think it’s even better than the old HearMe (which I remember very fondly) because we can see each other too!
Joe Offer has of course gone another step further and often searches for and adds info and words for the song being sung, in the chat box in real time... which sets this Mudcat Singaround apart from all others I’ve been involved with.

Mudcat is once again in the vanguard of new ideas!
(I wonder whether the wonderful Max might join us one week?!)

Boy this sounds like fun, like the old HearMe or the other programs.

Does a new link appear every week?
