Subject: Lyrics for 'The Pony Man'?
From: Dana Sussman
Date: 21 May 99 - 01:10 PM

I'm looking for the lyrics to "The Pony Man" - a Gordon Lightfoot song. Here's the beginning, from memory, but I can't remember any more. If you can correct what's below, or add more, I'd appreciate it.

When it's midnight on the meadow and the cows are in the shed and the river tells a story at the window by your bed If you listen very closely, be as quiet as you can In the night you'll hear him, it is the pony man.

We're always there to greet hime as he tumbles into town He leads a string of ponies, some are white and some are brown They never seem to kick or bite, they only want to play And they live on candy apples instead of oats and hay.

Thanks for your help! Dana

Here you are. If you are interested in any more of Gord's stuff, visit the Wayne Francis site at http://www3.pei.sympatico.ca/wfrancis/lightfoot/.
Enjoy,

THE PONY MAN
By Gordon Lightfoot

capo 2nd fret
intro: G

When it's (G)midnight on the meadow and the (C)cats are in the (G)shed.
And the river tells a (C)story at the (G)window by my bed.
If you listen very closely, be as (C)quiet as you (G)can;
In the yard you'll (C)hear him, it (D)is The Pony (G)Man.

We're always there to greet him when he tumbles into town.
He leads a string of ponies some are white and some are brown.
And they never seem to kick or bite, they only want to play.
They live on candy and apples instead of oats and hay.

And when we are assembled he gives a soft command.
And we climb aboard our ponies as in a row they stand.
Then down the road we gallop and across the field we fly.
And soon we all go sailing off into the midnight sky.

And as we gaily rock along beside a ripplin' sea,
There's Tom and Dick and Sally and Mary Jo and me
And The Pony Man is leading 'cause he's travelled here before
And he gives a whoop and a hollar at Mister Moon's front door.

And then we stop to rest awhile where the soda river glides,
Up to the slip comes a pirate ship to take us for a ride.
And The Pony Man's the captain and the children are the crew.
And we go in search of treasure and laugh the whole night through.

And when the hold is filled with gold and the sails begin to strain,
And the deck's piled high with apple pie we head for port again.
Then down the whirling star case so swift our ponies fly.
And we're safely in our beds again when the sunbeams kiss the sky.

Repeat first verse.

Hapy New Year one and all

The Pony Man. A search of the DT under yielded no results. I recall that John Sebastian plays a wonderful harp on the tune, but I'm not sure of the writting credits.

Lately I've been singing this wonderful song almost every night to my three year old son, and I'm tired of fudging the words. I know that it is from the album "Sit Down Young Stranger (later re-titled: If you could read my mind)".

Much obliged for any help on this one.

Lucius

Hey, Frank!

Why not share the lyrics with everyone, right here! That's part of the joy of this site.

Chords are a little tougher, but if you can do that, we'd like that also.

For some reason, that clicky thing won't work. Here is the link to copy and paste:

http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/blondie/313/lyrics_lib/frame-left.html

From there, take the 'Canadian artists' link and you will find lyrics to dozens of Lightfoot songs, including 'Pony Man'.

THE PONY MAN
by Gordon Lightfoot

When it's midnight on the meadow
And the cats are in the shed
And the river tells a story
At the window by my bed
If you listen very closely
Be as quiet as you can
In the yard you'll hear him
It is the pony man

We're always there to greet him
When he tumbles into town
He leads a string of ponies
Some are white and some are brown
And they never seem to kick or bite
They only want to play
And they live on candy apples
Instead of oats and hay

And when we're all assembled
He gives a soft command
And we climb aboard our ponies
As in a row the stand
Then down the road we gallop
And across the fields we fly
And soon we all go sailing off
Into the midnight sky

And as we gaily rock along
Beside a ripplin' sea
There's Tom 'n Dick 'n Sally
And Mary Joe and me
And the pony man is leading
Cause he's travelled here before
And he gives a whoop and a holler
At Mr. Moon's front door

And as we stop to rest a while
Where the soda river glides
Up to the slip comes a pirate ship
To take us for a ride
And the pony man's the captain
And the children are the crew
And we go in search of treasure
And laugh the whole night through

And the deck's piled high with apple pie
We head for port again
And down the whirling starcase
So swift our ponies fly
And we're safely in our beds again
When the sunbeams kiss the sky

When it's midnight on the meadow
And the cats are in the shed
And the river tells a story
At the window by my bed
If you listen very closely
Be as quiet as you can
In the yard you'll hear him
It is the pony man

Thanks Stewie, I borrowed this from the web site you indexed.

Enjoy the song!

Frank, I can save both of us the bother - I found the MIDI already sequenced at http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/lennon/351/folk.html. For Lightfoot fans there is quite a selection of MIDIS for his songs.

Alison, should we post someone else's MIDIs at MUDI?

Regards, John

Thank you one and all. Frank, thanks for the sheet music offer, but I got the tune down, it was the words that were stopping me.

I'm off now to get the words to "Sit down young Stranger", and see if it still brings tears to my eyes.

Lucius
