Hello, everyone.
When I was in school in the mid-2000s, we would read stories about old folk legends. One of them was apparently a story that was "inspired" or "similar" to the legend of Robin Hood. That story came accompanied with a song.

My memory is blurry about the contents of the story, all I know is that it involved a Robin Hood-esque figure, star crossed lovers, and the song itself. All I remember is the melody and a line from the chorus of the song which went:
"Cast his shadow in the moonlight,
.... in the moonlight,
.... by the moonlight."
I put periods in between the verses because I don't recall exactly the lyrics to them, but I'm 70% sure the first line is correct.

It had a strong old English/Celtic folk sound to it. The closest song I can compare it to is Scarborough Fair.

This is all I know, I'm not sure if I'll ever find it but it's been stuck in my head all night and I'm very curious if I could find any leads to what this song/story/tune is.

Both Australia and New Zealand had bushrangers known as Captain Moonlight. Quite a few songs, old and modern, exist. Maybe a search of Youtube will give you a match?

I don't suppose we're thinking of The Highwayman, poem by Alfred Noyes, put to music by several people, with the lines Wait for me by moonlight/Watch for me by moonlight/And I'll come to thee by moonlight/Though Hell should bar the way.

I found it, this was it!
Thank you so much, I recognized it immediately! It's amazing to hear this again, the poem stuck out so much that even now it crypt back to me 20 years later. What an amazing poem.
I can't thank the both of you more, this is amazing.

Why, Joe? They found the song.
(Ive heard other musical settings of the Noyes poem, but none as good, IMO, as McKennitt's.

It was blocked for some countries. If that's the case for you--whoever you are--try this one.
