On the local news I heard there might be as many as tens of thousands of vaccine doses headed to Alaska that might be available as soon as next week. Now there are half a million folks all over the state so I reckon the doses will be apportioned to:

* Health Professionals
* Elderly and At-Risk Health Situations
* Native and Bush Community.

Since a double dose is the standard treatment, that amount of doses will be absorbed relaively quickly even if, as I understand, a high percentage of my fellow Alaskans will not be eager to undergo vaccination. But it will establish a good base of people who will be examples of folks who got the shot early and did not get sick.

Good news!

NPR reports the first two jabs went down this morning in England:
DECEMBER 8, 2020.

First was a 91 year old pensioner.

Second was a guy named William Shakespeare.

Already been dubbed: "TAMING OF THE FLU"

God save the queen!

"... even if high profile folks do big PR for vaccines ..."

I assume "high profile folks" means people who are successful at sports, or who appear on television programmes with high viewing figures.

If so, the chances of my recognising them (or even having heard of them), let alone being persuaded to follow their examples, are vanishingly small.

I have read that Catherine the Great got a cowpox / smallpox vaccination in the early 1800s. Apparently it was not done in public and the vaccinating doctor was prepared to flee if things did not go well.

Things went well.

On tonight's news I heard that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip may be 'first adopters' with the new vaccine. Maybe there will be a public presentation. If only Lucy Worsley can make it!

Maybe Rudy Giuliani can recover some of his lost sparkle with a similar presentation from his hospital room.

It seems that shaming politicians for breaking their own rules is a futile effort. Every day or two I read about someone who decamped for some far away luxury location. I suspect the California politicians who were scolded a few days ago were at the same meeting as these Texas legislators, a week-long 50-people meeting in a Maui luxury hotel. "But ethics watchdogs have long criticized the conference, calling it a junket that hands lobbyists a captive audience of state lawmakers." The industry representatives and corporate sponsors paid $10,000 each to attend. I can't manage to post a link to the ePaper version of this story and it isn't in the html side of things yet.

You're asking the right man. I am a massive cheese aficionado as it happens. But which cheese? Well now. A firm Westcountry farmhouse cheddar would both be not smelly enough and would be a lamentable waste of cheese. I once bought a disgustingly overripe Brie at the pannier market in Barnstaple (bloody delicious). It ticked the stinky box...but it was very soft, too snot-like... I'm not a Stilton man, pongy though it is, and it can be a bit crumbly, which wouldn't fit the bill ("fit the bill"...cheese up nose...see what I did there?) So, for good stink, wide availability and good nostril-friendly texture, I'm going for...

Saint Agur!

I did read the thing end to end, and I found it rather shallow and unnecessary. We don't need to be patronised by a facile metaphor into realising that multiple strategies are needed from all of us to fight the virus. Just give us the unadorned facts. His clever yarn called for far more mental processing than hard facts ever would. And he seemed to be implying that measured naysaying (Steve's take on masks???) could be misinformation. As one of my favourite lecturers used to say if we got a bit flowery in our essays, what we don't need is empty cleverness. Great message, misfire delivery. That's all.

Just ran across this metaphor. Swiss cheese model of pandemic transmission: sure, the Mask slice has holes, but combined with handwashing and social distancing and all the other slices with their holes, you end up with no holes going all the way through. And don't let the Misinformation Mouse nibble any one layer away: sure masks aren't a 100% effective barrier but so what? They are only one slice of our model. Anyway:

Blicky.

I did, and I responded at 01.52 pm yesterday. I doubt whether you'll agree with any of it, but hey ho. As I keep saying, I have my opinions and I'm neither a mask rebel nor an anti-mask campaigner. Just a doubter. As it happens, I've just come in from wearing the damn thing for hours this afternoon, just like everyone else. As I think there's a chance that masks may in many circumstances do more harm than good, I think it's fine to voice those doubts. With the approved vaccines so far, on the other hand, the science firmly supports both their efficacy and their safety. Many vaccine doubters are campaigning against vaccines and many are loudly grandstanding their refusal to have it. Now that's what I CALL irresponsible.

There are lots of people round here, especially among the more elderly, who are saying that they will refuse the vaccine. Well I've decided that I'm not letting that pass. Anyone who sez that to me is in for a bollocking. I've been bollocked here for casting doubts on the efficacy of mask-wearing even though I wear masks wherever I'm supposed to. If I'm wrong about masks, which I may well be, at least I'm not behaving irresponsibly. In my book vaccine-refusers would be much worse.

The only "risk" attached to approved vaccines is that they won't work as well as predicted. Just think: half the people in the trials received a fake "vaccine" that was totally ineffective. The streets are not strewn with the corpses of either of the two cohorts. if you're offered the vaccine the responsible thing is to take it. You may just be contributing to herd immunity. Don't take it, maybe catch the virus and spread it around a bit? You think that's a respectable stance? Down to you, of course. Free country.

An inside look into the effective Covid vaccines;
Neither vaccine contain dead corona virus or 'living' covid virus like in the old vaccine making methods.

A new method of reproduction of the RNA in one segment of the virus that comprise only the little spikes on the virus body are being used.

This has been a new technique that has been researched for some time to make one vaccine against all flu varients by using only part of the tail or head of the flu virus. There are so many different types of flu
that progress has been slow, but here in town Dr. Fauci has soldiered on to solve the universal flu vaccine puzzle at NIH down the street.

Perhaps one day the universal flu vaccine will owe a debt to the success in the covid vaccine but the general new technique started here.

Over the last half century no men in my close family
have yet survived long enough to get to 70.

So knowing our luck, no matter how hard I try to stay alive,
I'm fatalistically resigned to reality
that any other cause of death is out to get me
well before a covid vaccine is proven conclusively safe..

Therefore, considering the prevailing most likely threat of immediate premature fatality..
.. it kinda inclines me to risk a jab asap...

Trump called the head of the FDA to the White House this week apparently to harangue them about approval of vaccines. I presume the FDA head will push back. It needs to be done in an orderly fashion, and this won't be one of the usual FDA fuckups, when the rules have been so diluted on other things they do that what they do is meaningless. It often has to do with dollars being cut to agencies like this so they can't do what they're supposed to.

The vaccine approval process in the US is not the same as in the UK. In the US, raw data is required, whereas in the UK reports from the vaccine developers are accepted. The difference is a few days. Dr Fauci, who had initially dissed the UK approach as too fast, has now recanted and accepted that our approach is sufficiently rigorous. Whilst I would always accept that the Tories seek hubris as their goal, I think that the rapid progress in approving the vaccine is wholly to the credit of the scientists in this country, not the bloody Tories. They do like to bathe in reflected glory....

I completely agree with all that, Jeri. The only thing is that the scaremongering about vaccine safety is rife on social media, and the companies are slow when it comes to removing it. I read a piece somewhere today that the scaremongering is spreading to community forums like this one. Two people here have already bigged up their scares about vaccine safety. It's unfounded, it's irresponsible and it's not on. Even on this strange little music forum. If you're scared of the vaccine, good for you. But those fears are not founded on any known science, so (to be less diplomatic than you), these guys need to shut up and keep their irrational fears strictly to themselves.

Subject: RE: BS: New news on the pandemic COVID-19

The problem is when people are afraid of the vaccine because they think may have bizarre side effects. Vaccines stimulate the immune system. If you're afraid they might make you hallucinate, grow a second head, OR CAUSE AUTISM, it's not just ignorant, but destructive.

The worst thing I believe that can happen is it won't be effective. Other things are soreness at the injection site, maybe more of your arm, flu-like symptoms (the immune system response), and... that's pretty much it.

So if you're afraid to get the shot, don't get the shot. Just keep wearing a mask and keep avoiding crowds, or being physically close to people you don't know well, an keep doing that until the virus isn't circulating very much. And don't try to frighten people who don't have an issue with the vaccine. At worst, it could kill people. (Nobody is probably paying attention, anyway. Strange people on a strange little music forum.)

You are scaremongering. The urgency of the situation has galvanised research workers and the approval system, and corners have not been cut. The science has been utterly amazing. If we waited for your suggested five years, millions more people may die. There's far too much of your kind of bollix being propagated and it's very worrying that it's spreading like wildfire from social media on to community forums like this one. Your choice: don't have the vaccine and let the rest of us move up the queue. Fine by me.

All other vaccines were tested for years, and nasty side-effects removed, before said vaccine ever got to market. *That* is where the guineapigging is. Imma wait 3-5 years, if I can. Mind you I am not an essential worker, so I can afford to wait.

And isn't every symptom a body reaction to something, and not that thing itself?

I wonder if, in the USA, at least, if we'd been better at wearing masks and social distancing, we could have greatly reduce the number of people infected. We have a federal government that doesn't want to do the job, and a number of folks who won't wear a mask, and the bottom line is we have a society full of people who don't give a shit about others.

A local poll showed that in Wash. DC 72% do not want the Covid 19 vaccine shots.

Chocolate city, as its called, is a mostly black population so I suspect a 'Tuskeegee effect' is the fear most blacks have in their mind. Unvaccinated blacks may produce a 'Magic Johnson effect' and cause some white people to be even more wary of blacks.

Obama will be vaccinated on TV. Same with Biden and Trump wants credit for the whole thing.

It is unfortunate that paranoia may rule the day here and abroad that can only inssure more infection and death for a longer time.

I will prefer innoculation to infection.
