Subject: Obit: Amos died today
From: GUEST,Jacqui.c

We heard the sad news this evening that our dear friend, Amos Jessup, died peacefully in his sleep this afternoon. His son, Tucker, has asked me to post this just to let all his friends know. Tucker has told me that he will keep us up to date with any news.

Both Kendall and I loved Amos and his loss has hit hard here. Dani and Janie are supporting Daly and Tucker right now.

RIP Amos, my dear friend.

Amos and LEJ and I made an annual trip to Hillsborough, North Carolina, for many years. I won't lie - it was because of the wonderful women who lived there. And I suppose we all watched over each other to make sure we didn't behave inappropriately.

And then Amos upset the balance and moved to Hillsborough with his wife Daly, and we grew to love her, too.

I started spending significant time with Amos back in about 2005, when Kendall came here to Northern California to do a concert with Utah Phillips - and Amos drove all the way up here from San Diego for the concert. I've seen him every years at the Getaway in DC since Lord knows when, and then I had more time with him when we started making our annual pilgrimage to Hillsborough - so we'd spend a week or more together making music and conversation, and not just the 3-day Getaway.

Along the way, Amos became a significant and beloved person in my life. I'll miss him.

He visited with a cousin on their way east of me. Spent the night. We drank and dined and Amos played the geetar constantly. It was lovely.

Even though I had far to much to drink, I couldn't sleep after they went to bed. I was just jazzed up by the GREAT evening of music and art and conversation... amazing.

Amos was bedded in a nice bed in my basement with an adjoining washroom.

I searched You Tube and found one of my favourite tunes by him. I played it. Next thing I know, Amos was at my office door. You see, my speakers are on the floor and he was in the basement bedroom so the music/resonance was loud down there. He was kinda cranky about it. I apologized profusely. He was still kinda cranky. Hehehhee.

What a gem of a human.

Here is the tune...

gnu, after reading your note about calling I was planning to do so during the day this week. Now I'll have to send my good wishes to Amos through contemplation and listening to his music.

This is a huge blow to the musical members, and elsewhere to the serious, the silly, the political, the intellectual communities here at Mudcat.

Here is the earlier discussion when he was ill - it includes links to a lot of his work.

So very sad.

I've come to think of death as... well, we all get to play in the pool, or in the session, or whatever, but at some point, we have to leave. The person doing the leaving just stops. Goes to sleep and doesn't wake up. The people left behind are the ones to feel the loss--the tearing pain and the "phantom limb" sensation. Still there, somewhere.

Amos was such a huge part of Mudcat during what I think of as our "heyday". Before it was mostly a place for British people to fight about British politics. We were Americans (and Germans, and Irish and Icelanders, and Canadians, and...etc) who fought about American politics. Or the best recipe for chile.

The soaring imagination of the Tavern threads or the inspiration of "a flea,an orange,a bicycle seat" made Mudcat seem like a wonderland of brilliant minds and crazy ideas. We played, not fought. There are fewer people who remember those times now. And the light that was Amos, that shone on far more than only Mudcat, is darkened. Go well, you good man.

I'm devastated. The last news in his "ill" thread that I saw seemed to raise some hopes. But it sounds as though at least he was in good spirits at the end. What an unfillable hole he leaves behind him.

I have no idea whether there really is an "up there" or not, but I like to daydream about Amos and John In Kansas debating the relative merits of Apple & Windows. Oh how I miss them.

Rest in peace.

Amos stayed here a few days after his visit with gnu... we took him to the local guitar store, fed him Rita's spaghetti, debated Life, the Universe and Everything.
Here on Mudcat, Amos & I debated, argued, teased each other and speculated (sometimes genteely, sometimes pointedly) about whether the **mind** existed apart from the body. He ragged me about being locked into the idea of "meat space", and I asked him pointed questions about the metaphysics of 'consciousness apart from physical being'....
I guess now HE knows the answer... one way or the other.
If HE was right, I expect to hear from him soon... I'm waiting.

????? so long, buddy...

Another of the wonderful names from Mudcat gone. I only admired him from a distance, but did get to see him having a grand time at a couple of Getaways, and see the person who was the name. It is easy to see how big a hole his absence will be in many lives, though it looks like he had the distinct advantage of friends who dont hold back on saying how valued their friends are during their lifetimes. I hope that thought is some balm for the grief.

My sympathies are to those
whom Amos leaves behind, who knew him well and who miss him.

For Amos I feel relief, actually.
He plainly did not like being incapacitated,
and was impatient to experience
a liberation from all the disabilities.

So now Amos has discarded all the aging, poorly functioning mechanisms
and is flying high and free.
And just think how many other Mudcatters
are on the other side to give him a hero's welcome.

Reeling, even more than I thought I would when I "thought" his time would come.

I will say that as devastating as it is to have lost my dear friend so suddenly, I'm kind of grateful he did not endure the ravishing suffering that so many other of my family and friends have suffered during the lead up to dying from cancer.

We will never know what killed him, but it probably was not directly or immediately related to either the cancer or the head injury. His primary care physician, on being described the brief symptoms he experienced in the several hours before he died, speculates it may have been an embolism. It also appears he died peacefully, in his sleep, while napping in his recliner.

I hope this doesn't strike folks as macabre for me to share, because I think Amos would be quite pleased, or at least quite amused to learn that in death, he bore a remarkable resemblance to Merle Haggard.

Amos was a good friend for a number years, and after he, Daly and Tucker moved here, we came to regard each other as family. I love all of them deeply.

My favorite memories will be of suppers or lunches around Dani's, my, or the Jessup's table. Lively and fun and sometimes very serious conversations - always really open, fearless conversations - no need to hide behind a protective social mask of who we either think we should be, or who we believe others think we should be. Radical, loving acceptance of one another.

Often the evening or afternoon ended with music. Icing on the cake. When at my house, nothing delights me more than to put food away and clean up the kitchen while listening to good friends and family swap songs or fiddle tunes. The music is what brought us together to begin with, but it was the deep and enduring friendship that mattered most.

All of us fear the prospect of suffering during the process of dying. Some people fear death. Amos did not. Like Bill, I'm a bit skeptical about any 'afterlife', but who knows? I know there was a big part of Amos that had some conception of the death of this body as a stepping-off place to opportunities for other fine and creative adventures in consciousness.

I'm going to miss and mourn Amos deeply and for a long time. So grateful to still have Daly and Tucker in my life.

I've said too much and probably shared more personally than is appropriate. Selfishly, I needed to share this somewhere, and here on Mudcat feels safer than on Facebook.

Thanks for listening.

I can well appreciate that Amos did not fear death. He was a man with a lot of spiritual insight and a lot of depth of character. One thing I'm glad I did was that some years ago I ordered a copy of his book "Beyond the Cascade". It's a wonderfully imaginative story with much to say about that great big subject: "the meaning of life". I've read it twice now, and will probably read it again. Amos is amusingly described in the blurb about the author as: "A. H. Jessup is an American writer, engineer, pastor and general dogsbody from North Carolina. He has worked as a systems engineer, a sea captain, a commercial diver, a truck driver, a pastor, a miner, a lecturer and once sold encyclopedias. He lives in Hillsborough, near the River Eno, with the girl of his dreams, a handsome son, and the perfect dog."

Marvelous! I trust those were his own words. (smile) It's such a wonderful book, and I totally recommend it to anyone who wants to read an intriguing adventure story combined with a fascinating and very idealistic look at what life may really be about.

Amos remains vividly alive as far as I'm concerned. He is an unforgettable character, a great musician, a great writer, a great man.

Right on. He never feared death. He loved and LIVED life. Told me so. That was his goal... to live life to it's fullest until the end. He did it.
