Subject: Lyr Req: A song help, please From: Deckman Date: 23 Apr 16 - 07:28 PM Some fifty years ago, I heard a version, or perhaps a "perversion" of the American song "Casey Jones." In some verses, it got a little raunchy, by fifty years ago standards. I can only remember one verse: "Casey said just before he died, There's two more things I'd like to ride, The fireman said, what could be, A bowlegged woman and a Ferris wheel." I know this is wrong, and I suspect I've got it mixed up with a version of the song of Jay Gould. I'd appreciate it if anyone can steer me straight. Thanks ... bob(deckman)nelson |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song help, please From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Apr 16 - 08:19 PM You got me wondering, Bob. I guess there ARE parallels between "Jay Gould's Daughter" and "Casey Jones" - and Southbound Passenger Train I'd say your verse must be from "Jay Gould's Daughter" - although I admit I've never heard the verse before. You'll find your verse in Ed Cray's Erotic Muse, or in this post (click). So, is the song "Casey" or "Gould"? I dunno. -Joe- P.S. Take a look at this quote (click) Thread #19719 Message #206007 Posted By: RWilhelm 03-Apr-00 - 09:56 AM Thread Name: Lyr Add: Casey Jones 2 and queries Subject: Lyr Add: CASEY JONES (bawdy version)
Stewie, Thanks for the recommendations. I've got the Dixieland Jug Blowers CD and the incredible "Ruckus Juice & Chittlins" CDs. I will definitely check out Clifford Hayes Louisville Stompers.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song help, please (Casey Jones) From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 24 Apr 16 - 07:28 PM Western photographer and novelist Dane Coolidge reported in 1912 that he'd heard endless verses of a bawdy parody of "Casey Jones" among Arizona cowboys early that year. In fact, it was almost "the only tune they hummed." Each verse, Coolidge wrote, was "fouler than the last." Botkin's "Treasury of American Folklore" observes that bawdy versions of the song were well known to American soldiers in France in 1918. |
