Unlike England and Wales, Scotland does not have a fishing license, you do however need to buy a permit for the particular water you want to fish.

In the rivers you will find mainly: salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling in some rivers, there are lots of stillwater fisheries containing various rainbow trout etc.

Brown trout can be fished for free on many rivers.

On the Orkney Islands you can fish unrestricted on any inland water (or you could last time I was there).

The vet school is presumably the Dick Vet at Roslin? People fish in the North and South Esk near there. I've never seen anybody catch anything but I suppose it happens sometimes.

BTW the main movers and shakers in our local klezmer group are researchers at the Dick Vet.

Jim Malcolm, former lead singer of Old Blind Dogs, as a more-than-avid fly fisherman. His wife calls the River Tay "Jim's other wife." According to Jim, fly fishing is Scotland is absolutely wonderful. He spends 3 months a year on performance tours in the US - and he does a lot of fly fishing here, too.

We spent a lot of time along the River Tay when we took a Jim Malcolm tour of Scotland in 2013. Here's my best photo of the River Tay at Perth: (click)

River tay sounds great. I have a wonderful back pack orvis that is perfect for travel. Great fly rod and breaks down to the size of a rolled up newspaper. I am there thanks Joe

You can get a ticket for Perth town waters on the Tay from the council offices at a very reasonable price, I caught a 12lb salmon just outside the city centre just upstream of Perth Island.

And isn't it just about the most beautiful place in the world, Dave? We stayed upstream in the tiny town of Dunkeld, which may even be prettier. Jim abandoned the tour for a while then, so he could do some fly fishing. Pitlochry, even farther upstream, is another very pretty place.

Who knows the name of the beautiful documentary / film (made by an American, within the last couple of years I think?) about a woman in the North East of Scotland who was famous for her salmon fly-tying?
The film maker had read her fascinating obituary (as did I)and was determined to discover more about her life. She was a legend in her own lifetime- - apologies for my inability to remember her name or the title of the film- - I have most of the story and images stored in my mind, just not the names -- -

also - which Vet school has your daughter been studying at old dude? (Glasgow or Edinburgh?)

At a Simon Mayor concert during the break someone asked Simon about his Mike Vanden mandolin and are they available, Simon said they are available if you can catch Mike Vanden because he spends all his time fishing now instead of building instruments.

NB DNR just instituted a catch-release only for brilliant salmon. It's very sad. Modern lumbering and reduce regulations (the new forestry policy announced last summer will be far more devastating) are destroying habitat fish, our four legged animals, insects, birds, hardwood trees... the Acadia Forest. I grieve.

Copper John along with the bead head pheasant tail are my favorite nymphs for western trout. I usually fish them under a large dry fly like a Wulff or a hopper fly.

Ah, fly fishing. Was wondering.

Purely personal, but I think it's cruel to catch and release. Catch and eat your catch, sure, if you limit how much you catch, but ripping the poor beasties out of the water, tearing the hook from their mouth and putting them back - oof, no.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: Where can I fish in Scotland

I don't deny the cruelty involved in catch and release fishing or any any other type of fishing , Thompson, but I don't rip "the poor beasties out of the water, tearing the hook from their mouth" before I release them. I use the heaviest tackle that I can fish effectively with in order to limit the duration of the fight, use barbless hooks and only remove fish from the water on the rare occasion that I keep one for the table and when I do this I dispatch them as quickly and humanely as possible.

I once heard that there are "kilt" only fishing areas, and "kilt optional" fishing areas. But, I can't confirm that this is factual, or myth?

Over to you Musket, since you seem to hang out over there.

apologies, Guest Giok - I couldn't remember Megan Boyd's name, nor the title of 'Kiss The Water' - otherwise I would have looked up the details before I posted.
Megan Boyd lived in / near Brora in Sutherland -- so a good bit farther North than 'North East'!
I would really urge everyone to see this documentary/ film -- it is truly stunning and I found it both interesting and moving (and I know nothing about fly tying or fishing)
The film maker is Eric Steel, and American.
