Yup, on November 5, 1911 Lenoard Franlin Slye was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lenny was one of my youthful heroes and role models.

Yes. Roy Rogers. Did Dale Evans have a different birth name also?

I'm sure that RR appreciates the thought (I told him not to mind Rap's being in his cups :).

Today, one year ago, I and about 50 others got burned out of our apartments. There were no deaths, other than one cat whose owner was at work, and most of us landed on our feet. Very fortunate we are, but there are emotional scars.

By time I was 11-12, I was dubious of Roy chasing bad guys on Trigger one minute, then switching to a Ford 'woody' station wagon to run errands.

LOL! Daring leap to Trigger's back!

From this page about "Red River Valley", where an entire film is described, with images.

Ebbie... indeed. I am sure all of the regular suspects around here recall learning of the fire and of the updates that followed.

Yeah....I loved Roy and Dale. Never missed the TV show and watched the movies when they replayed on Saturday morning TV. I remember feeling sort of guilty watching Gene and Hoppy and the Cisco Kid. I was a huge Davy Crockett fan but that was okay since he wasn't a cowboy. We'd argue about who was the best cowboy. A few years later we'd be arguing over whether Willie or Mickey was the better ball player.

Roy was a pretty good singer, but he was no Gene Autry.

Please ignore the previous post. I've been spending too much time down here in the BS section

Actually, Roy was a good singer. He was part of the Sons of the Pioneers.

The Eric Bogle song reminds me of a poignant Buddy Tabor song, Cowboy in a Wheelchair. He speaks of a kid with crippled legs who 'rides a black stallion swift as the wind'.

I'm reminded of a segment in the Honeymooners where Ralph and Ed were at each other about cowboy stars. Ralph says, "Hoot Gibson could outdraw Tom Mix any day!"

I was also a Gene Autry fan.

When I returned home after a tonsillectomy my reward for being a good boy was a complete Roy Rogers outfit, gun and holster, and hat. My brother had to be "Bullet".
