When I was a little boy my school had a book of stories and I would love to find a copy of that book. I have reason to believe it was published by Grossett & Dunlap. It was green with orange lettering, and the illustration on the cover was of Simple Simon meeting the "Pie man".

Anyone have an idea?

Yes, let me work on it. I have an idea of which one it is, but I can't put a title to it right now.

I don't remember if it had a title. I would be so grateful if you can help in this quest.

"Simple Simon met a pie man going to the fair..."

Was it a book of nursery rhymes or was the entire book the story of Simple Simon?

Linn

Kendall, I think I know the book you mean but come on, did they really have BOOKS when you were young? And writing? And language?

Dan's clicky c.1915 Color Illustrated Children's Simple Simon - Frank Adams - Campbell Kid!
This paper cover childrens' book of nursery rhymes was published by the Charles E. Graham & Co. of Newark, N. J. & New York; it is undated and is labeled : "023 - Nursery Rhyme Series."   The front cover is illustrated with a wonderful picture of Simple Simon, a pieman and a puppeteer, with British illustrator Frank Adams' (1871-1944) signature in the lower left. This is the only illustration in the book with a recognizable signature, although the picture on the back cover (the 2nd illustration, above) and one of the color illustrations inside are probably his as well. Other color illustrations are unidentified, but look to me very similar to those of the Irishman John Frew (1875-1955) - see the second and third illustrations above. The black and white line drawings were either done by Philadelphia illustrator Grace Wiederseim Drayton (1877-1936) or someone copying her style. This artist invented the 'Campbell Kids' for the Campbell Soup Company in 1904 while she was married to advertising executive Theodore E. Wiederseim. Although her illustrations conjure up Campbell's Soup these days, she continued to use these children in other illustrations for post cards and childrens' books.

The book is 12 pages long and is 8"   wide x 10 5/8"   tall. Besides the pictures above, there are two more full-color illustrations and ten or so black and white line drawings.

The line drawings have all been crayoned, as in the fifth illustration above. The spine has been hand-mended with needle and thread; and the pages have become quite brittle over time, with chips missing around the edges and a few tears on one of the inner leaves.

This will be mailed in a rigid cardboard envelope, with an inner envelope to protect it in shipping. I ship anywhere in the world.

what a little treasure!

Another old book wanted: A musician friend grew up in Colorado in the 30s/40s and would like to find a song book they used in elementary school. He doesn't remember the title but he says there was a song called 'Sourdough Mountain' and another called 'Cowboy without a Guitar'.

Does anyone remember such a book or those songs?

(Damn. I miss kat.)

Hey, Rapp. I'll have you know that the printing press had been on the scene for at least 3 years before I was born!

I'm not easily excited, but the thought of finding this book is doing it!

This may have been the first book I ever read, and I got hooked on literature by it. We didn't have books at home, Too poor;I was the only reader, so I borrowed them from a cousin. The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, one titled "Two in patches".

Ebbie, most of my burned school song books have not been replaced, but as I remember Joe Offer has quite an extensive collection. I believe MC has one or more threads listing the contents of many. That might lead you or your friend to the right title.

There can be great pleasure to be got from stumbling across books that had formative influences on your life.
I would give my right arm for a copy of 'One Thousand and one Poems', an early birthday present which I loaned to a teacher who never returned it - the *******.
Can I suggest to anybody interested in Childrens' books that there are a number of works, some available, others out of print but obtainable, which deal with the subject as a whole and are helpful in tracking down half-remembered collections.
William and Ceil Baring Gould's 'The Annotated Mother Goose'. Leonard de Vries, 'Flowers of Delight' and Demer and Moyles' 'From Instruction to Delight' - an anthology of childrens' literature to 1850, are all useful to consult and a pleasure to read and re-visit in their own right.

'Two in Patches' by Blanche Rebecca More, 1934

other booksellers also have this book

Some years back at a Doll & Bear Fair I came across a copy of a book I owned as a child - naturally I bought it, & also found another childhood book in a book about Australian children's literature.

As the oldest of 4, I only have 2 books from my childhood - one a very battered Snow White without a cover, the other a neat & tidy 1-volume children's encyclopedia.

My brother and I borrowed Rainbow in the Sky from the library so often that our parents suggested that we pool our allowance money and buy our own copy. We did - in ~1960 it cost us $5 and that book was around the house for years. I don't know where it went, one of the other kids got it, but I found another copy at my Dad's house after he died, evidently he'd found used. I have that one. It has such a great selection of poetry for kids and it has a lot of poems that are also folksongs.

I'm so sorry, Dan, it's not the one I want.

As I recall, it is a hard cover, green with a silhouette in orange of Simple Simon.

Is it this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PreWar-Simple-Simon-Mother-Goose-Rhymes-Childrens-Antique-Story-Book-c1934-/261289931429?pt=Antiquarian_

It's on eBay for the next seven days at a buy-it-now price of $11.50. It's a prewar hardcover Simple Simon book with an orange and green cover illustration...

I'm pretty sure it's not it. The one I want is not centered around Simple Simon, no writing at all on the cover, and just a simple orange silhouette, not a drawing.

Covers can vary, esp. if there was a later printing.
