Like BAW et al, some folk have left here following an elaborate explanation of their moving on, then returning often without a similar narrative.

Does the team think there should be a proper procedure for going/coming or not?

No. Why bother? Do you explain every time you leave the house or return home?

I don't know who BAW is.

The usual protocol seems to be that I first hear somebody's arrived when they announce they're leaving, which means you can guarantee they'll be back for a binge of self-righteous postings a week later.   Whoever BAW is, that's what they seem to have done.

So in practice "you can all fuck yourselves, I'm off" means "hello" around here.

My dog welcomed me back nicely but don't expect such a joyous welcome here no matter how deserved or fortuitous it may actually be for the usual bunch of coconuts here.

Being nice is seemingly not on the priority list for the 20,000 posts club however there is more talent and civility here than you will ever find on the mega social network sites. On Facebook your announcement would inspire posts such as, "Go back to hell and die you fuckwad!".

Here you get a kindly and sincere "why bother?".

I figure who couldn't use a Mr. Happy in their lives. The water is fine in a relative sense. As Pete Seger might say "the water isn't perfect but there are fewer PCBs in it now.

Al, if you happen to be socially shy like myself you should know that folks here won't call you a friend unless you've sung together, broken bread, emptied bottles or got to a getaway. Its like the union.

Ya gotta go down and join the union
you gotta go down all by yourself
Ya gotta go down and join the union
you gotta go down and join the union by yourself.

Like katlaughing? Who never met or shared anything but a virtual meal with most of us, never attended a Getaway, didn't sing to my knowledge.

Leave...don't leave...come back...don't come back. Who cares?

If you want to take a break, do it sans dramatic announcement. Then you can come back all refreshed and not feel awkward.

Now keep in mind that saying something silly and cliche (like "I am leaving.") is the second best way to get at least 50 posts on your thread while saying "I have returned." will probably be mostly ignored.

You can always post some verbiage about being gone/back when you come back, and then if people really want the info they can find it (or be directed to it). Like, as a prefatory paragraph to an on-topic post in whatever thread catches you to reply when you're lurking. We ALL lurk when we "leave." :~)

I agree with SINSULL. I count myself lucky to have a number of friends here who I have never met in person. Kat was definitely one of them, Old Dude another and Gnu is definitely a friend. I have been lucky enough to have met some of my online friends in person, after they have becomes friends, and that is a real treat.

Again, as SINSULL says, stay, go whatever. It does seem to me to be a bit attention seeking, but that's just my opinion.

As we all realize, "I'm leaving" is not a reasonable thing to write by any standards. "I threaten to leave unless you all apologize and promise to be nice in the future" is not any more reasonable, but at least makes some formal sense. The actual message is "I am thoroughly dissatisfied", normally stating a reason which is what attracts other posters. A title "Obit: BS" or "Respectful posting" serves exactly the same purpose; the elves may well merge all those threads under the title "The Stepmother of All BS Threads".

For a change, what about a thread for "Born Again Nice Gals/Guys"? "I once was a troll, an abuser, a taunter, a racist, a militant sectarian, a GROLIES, a GROLIES-hater, a GROLIES-hater-hater etc. - but when XX threatened to leave, that opened my eyes! Praise the Mud, I saw the light!" How many responses may that attract?

Anyway, as with leaving, proving it is doing it.

■Smokey: Why, I'm a genie. I live in that lamp. They call me 'Genie with the light brown hair'. Oh, that was a witty one! Yah-Hal! Yah-Hal! Yah-Hal! Yah-Hal! Yah-Hal!

Perhaps I am focusing too narrowly on a situation involving one member who I thought I knew well under one name.... and with whom I later became re-acquainted under another name he'd chosen without telling anyone, who I failed to spot in his new colors. This (for various reasons not to post here) was quite embarrassing when he got around to saying, "Hey, dummy, it's ME." Oh, all his reasons made sense after the fact, but a heads-up would have been nice somedamnwhere. Trust and credibility are not always so easily mended once something starts off on the wrong foot.

In "mere text" it's awful easy to misunderstand!

I like the "former-Grolie" approach too. To extend the idea, I wish some of our drink-saturated members could somehow let us know when they're posting what they will later be able to remember posting, and when they are posting an item they'd never have typed sober.

  • How to announce you're leaving Mudcat: Privately, to your friends
  • How to announce you're returning to Mudcat: Privately, to your friends

Public announcements are tedious and melodramatic. Exception: if you've been away because of illness or tragedy or travel.

really its the old Ian Paisley/Gerry Adams conundrum, isn't it. They're both Irishmen. They both have much more in common than they have with Englishmen.

That's how it is with folk music. i went into folk music. Was dismayed by the ways the leaders of the sect took the music. But really I had for more in common with the folksingers i disagreed with than people who had never been inside a folk club.

Mudcat is a place where people with divergent opimions about folk music can meet and discuss.   But the divergence is still there.

I'd just start posting again. No need for an announcement. Mind you, it depends how you left. If you flounced off dramatically denouncing everyone who disagreed with you or was nasty to you in any way, you're going to get some flak when you start posting again.

If, like me, you tend to lose interest for a few months but then a subject arises that you're interested in, just start posting again. Chances are no-one will notice, although you might be accused of running scared!!

If somebody asks where you've been, just say you were here, but couldn't get a word in edgeways.

followed, at the appropriate time, by
"Lady Margaret has returned to town."

Uncle_DaveO (27 Sep 13 - 09:24 AM), we recently had a thread of the "I'm leaving" type in whose course the OP (i.e. the person who announced her leaving!) was accused herself of being a militant GROLIES, and thankworthily gave us some illustrative examples of her own extremely aggressive discussing style.

Sorry for assuming all readers to have read that other thread - we should never.

Also, I am a strict opponent of name-calling and would never call anybody a GROLIES or a troll etc. The chances that people actually improve their style (let alone their level of reasoning) are small, but not zero. I know of several Mudcatters who have more than one style at their disposal, so they may well be encouraged to use the better one (- better for their cause and for Mudcat). Just do it, and it will be noticed without further announcement!
