Why is this in BS???

Hmmmmm???

Maybe 'cause all the Freddie Fender fans spend more time in the out-house than the penthouse???

I always loved that song...

Think I mighta played it in the 70s??? Maybe not??? But, ahhhhh, yeah, I think I did...

I loved Freddie Fender... He was the shits!!!

Well, I don't understand it. I never did "get" why the thread on Musical Snobbery was BS but, despite make comments to this effect in the thread, it remained firmly below the line. Call me simplistic but, as I understand it, if it's music related then it should be up top. This thread couldn't be more music related.

I don't care what side of the line this thread is on.

That said, I would have to start by mentioning at least half the songs ever written by Mary Chapin Carpenter, and that is a very long list of songs.

Then there's another long list of songs written by Lynn Miles, who I think is Canada's finest songwriter.

Yo, Brucie...

The Carlene Carter song is very nice, however, it is note for note the same song musically speaking as Don Williams "I'll Be Loving You" from the 70s... I know because I used to do the Don Williams song back then...

As for songs that speak to my heart there is a spooky one that I still do from time to time by Blind Lemon Jefferson who was found frozen to death on the streets of Chicago at a young age of about 32... It's entitled "One Kind Favor" where Blind Lemon all but writes the final chapter of his life... Some folks may know this song as "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"...

OOh, songs I can't sing all the way through because my emotions take away my voice are numerous!

And this is definitely NOT BS.

Well, it may be BS, but it IS a music thread.

So lessee, I'll start with No Man's Land/The Green Fields of France/Willie McBride;

And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda;

Joan Baez' train wreck song I forget the name of ("Along came the FFB, the swiftest on the line"), for now. [The Wreck on the C&O]

Yeah, wow, this thread is great.

I remember Rainy Night in Georgia at the time the song was out. Perfect.

And my pick for Freddy Fender is "Before the Next Teardrop Falls". I love to sing it too--especially the Spanish verse.

But Freddy is just wonderful no matter what he sings--and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" is right up there. i also really like his "After the Fire Is Gone"--again with his Spanish verse.

Someone has already mentioned Mary Chapin Carpenter; "Jubilee" always reduces me to a puddle. Something about the words and the tune and the sentiment and the references and the musicians - especially that, the way most of the song is very laid-back, just guitar and drums and then all of a sudden there's pipes and bass and violin and everything else making a contribution, then we're back to just voice and guitar again. Wonderful.

I wondered about "Before the Next Teardrop Falls". He won Grammy for best country song for that one. I was pullin fer John Denver's "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" but "Best in Breed" depends on the definition of the breed. Well, it used to, right, Kendall?

The Drifters "I can't go on without you" and,for no reason I can think of, "The canoe song" by Paul Robeson. For purely sentimental family reasons "The Dream of Olwen" by the Luton Girls Choir.
If I wasn't so tough these three would reduce me to a sobbing wimp.

Subject: Lyr Add: DONEGAL RAIN (Andy M. Stewart)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Aug 13 - 02:48 PM

Mentioned by GUEST,jeff on 15-Mar-2013, these lyrics have apparently not been posted at Mudcat before:

DONEGAL RAIN
As sung by Andy M. Stewart on "Donegal Rain" (1997)

My darling, do not break your heart,
Though I leave this Irish shore.
Though their cruel laws may force us to part,
Fate may join we two once more.
Take this farewell kiss as a token
Of my love while far I stray,
For true love will never be broken.
Let me kiss your tears away.

Like the rain, like the rain,
When he turned his back to Donegal,
Her tears fell like the rain.

Don't let your eyes fill with sorrow, love
Don't wet your pretty cheeks with tears.
There will come a bright new tomorrow, love.
There will come an end to fears.
Dark may seem our lives' December.
Time will bring to us the May.
Love will guide me back, remember.
Let me kiss your tears away.

Like the rain, like the rain,
When he turned his back to Donegal,
Her tears fell like the rain.

Take this jewelled ring to wear, my love,
While I am o'er the wave.
Next my heart you know I will wear, my love,
This lock of hair you gave.
Kiss me once before we sever.
For my safety, say you'll pray.
You will be my dearest, forever, love.
Let me kiss your tears away.

Like the rain, just falling like the rain,
When he turned his back to Donegal,
Her tears fell like the rain.

Like the rain, like the rain,
When he turned his back to Donegal,
His tears fell like the rain.

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU STRONG (Winchester)
From: Ebbie
Date: 18 Aug 13 - 03:43 PM

It would be nice if I always remembered the message; nonetheless I am always given a lift by Jesse Winchester's

THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU STRONG

If you love somebody
Then that means you need somebody
And if you need somebody
That's what make you weak
If you know you're weak
Then you know you need someone
Oh, it's a funny thing but
That's what make you strong

That's what make you strong
That's what gives you power
That's what lets the meek come sit beside the king
That's what lets us smile in our final hour
That's what moves our souls and
That's what makes us sing

And to trust somebody
Is to be disappointed
It's never what you wanted
And it happens every time
But if you're the trusting kind
This don't even cross your mind
And Oh it's a funny thing but
That's what make you strong

That's what make you strong
That's what gives you power
That's what lets the meek come sit beside the king
That's what let's us smile in our final hour
That's what moves our souls and
That's what makes us sing

Subject: Lyr Add: HURT (Trent Reznor)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Aug 13 - 11:05 PM

This was mentioned by Dave Hanson on 13-Mar:

HURT
Written by Trent Reznor
Originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails on "The Downward Spiral" (1994)
As sung by Johnny Cash on "American IV: The Man Comes Around" (2002)

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain,
The only thing that's real.
The needle tears a hole,
The old familiar sting.
Try to kill it all away,
But I remember everything.

What have I become,
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
My empire of dirt.
I will let you down.
I will make you hurt.

I wear this crown of thorns*
Upon my liar's chair,
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair.
Beneath the stains of time,
The feelings disappear.
You are someone else.
I am still right here.

What have I become,
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end.
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down.
I will make you hurt.

If I could start again
A million miles away,
I would keep myself.
I would find a way.

[* In the original song sung by Nine Inch Nails, the phrase was "crown of shit."]

Some of the above - but I won't say which - suggest to me the thread title
Songs that sing to your heart, bypassing your brain which would strongly disapprove of them.
Popular music often shamelessly searches for this effect, sometimes successfully even with hard-boiled intellectuals.

Speaking to the heart is a property common to most music, including all good music - even Baroque or electronic etc. The list would be too long for a thread.
