Yeah. It seems that they may have never made it overboard. Time will tell. My buddy from Ironbound Island wrote me that if he was given a choice, he would rather die in the boat than in the sea. I understood that, but still... there are rough seas for the families and friends.

There are worse things than snow storms. The loss of five young men is very heavy. On tonight's news, local fishermen are going to try to get to the upside down boat in a recovery effort. The ocean is a harsh mistress.

5 young fishermen lost

The search for the 5 NS fishermen was scaled down last night, I suspect turned into a recovery search. Survival models indicate a 24 hour survival probability in the water for the weather conditions, if a person wore a survival suit. Sympathy for friends and family and RIP.

THE COAST GUARD
NovaNewsNow.com

""Despite an increased search task force, search teams had no further sightings overnight for the five fishermen from Shelburne County.

Lt. Peter Ryan spokesperson for the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax said that the search would continue.

"So far they have searched 7,000 square miles," he said.

Seas remained rough with six metre swells throughout the night and strong winds that forced a cormorant helicopter to return to base.

"It can be fierce," ," said Lt. Ryan.

He said that it would return to the search at first light.""

CJLS Radio Yarmouth- ""...The Miss Ally, a sword fishing and halibut vessel, was on its way from fishing grounds off Woods Harbour to Sambro when it ran into trouble.

The vessel went missing 120 kilometres south-east of Liverpool.""

I hope the Yanks don't have that in the chopper and that there is still hope for the lads.

I don't think any of my buddies would sail out of there but that ain't a fer sure. No matter. When ya sail or know someone who does and this happens it kinda saddens ya.

Odd maybe? Like... ANY air disaster gets my attention because I worked at airports (design, construction). Same with sea disasters... know guys, worked for Marine Atlantic, other stuff. Maybe a simple connection like such makes someone "care more"?

Update... the wind is still blowin cold air up me arse. I got the furnace up about 4 degrees more than usual.

I should not be so negative, as there is always hope - but it's nearly 24 hours and they faced eight to 10 metre waves, hurricane force winds and cold weather - it is not a good situation for anyone. If they had the survival suits on and got in a raft quickly, maybe, but, it still would be a tough situation.

From CBC TV it said they are out of Woods Harbour, near Cape Sable Island.

I hate to say after this long, and considering the length of time, the frigid temperatures, winds and (likely) wave levels it is more likely a RIP. If there were signs of life near the raft, the helicopters would likely have seen it (I believe they have heat detecting equipment to aid them in locating survivours - beyond visual sightings).

"based out of Shelburne" I know guys that sail out of Shelburne, Yarmouth, Lunenburg...

I'll google it.

CBC... Lieut. Peter Ryan at the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said the boat's emergency beacon went off Sunday night. It was picked up by the JRCC at 11:06 p.m. AT.

"Weather conditions at the time were extremely poor, with seas reported between eight and 10 metres, zero visibility and blowing snow, with up to hurricane-force winds," he said Monday.

A Cormorant helicopter was dispatched at 7:30 a.m. AT, flew over the area, saw the boat was overturned, and spotted a life-raft. There was no word on the location of the sailors.

The U.S. Coast Guard said its plane dropped a locator buoy near the life-raft to help officials plot a search area in the high seas.

Two coast guard vessels are also on the scene.

Oh dear.

Not enough snow fell in Halifax to shovel. But, boy, it did blow. The snow blew off to Moncton:)

BTW, on a sad note a groundfish fishing boat (based out of Shelburne) was capsized last night in the bad winds off Halifax, with five young men missing. I hear the captain was only 22 years old. RIP

As for the weather, I hope you're gettin over the latest blow. It's a delicious, sunny day in Ottawa, minus 9 with no wind, so I think I'll take a stroll uptown to choir practice.

Next week, it could be us under the hammer, so I'll enjoy it while I can!

THE SOB STALLED! I have explained the reasons for this on many threads. But, every time they stall, we get crap on top of crap! And I am getting crapped on. No bother to me except that I should stay up until the SOB blows itself out and at it's present rate that could be hours and hours. I think I will shovel one more time and hit the bunk for a few hours.

Sorry to bore you all. I guess I am the one that is bored.

Crap! This one is gonna start(ed) with mixed crap turning into crap and then turning back to crap and then we are going to have crap at times heavy with local blowing crap in winds 50 to 80kph. Total 24 hour crap forecast is 30 to 40cm.

That kinda crap don't make no nevermind a me but Mum gets all worked up over it. Maybe my secret spaghetti sauce recipe will help soothe her trepidations.

Beautiful sunny weekend in Ottawa, and most of the streets are well plowed. Sidewalks -- well, not so much; we pedestrians know our place on the city's priority list. Winterlude, the local version of Carnival, is in full swing, the canal is properly frozen, and all is well.

Until Tuesday, when the rain starts. Just as well; that's Shrove Tuesday and the end of fun for six weeks.

We only got about 40cm (16") with winds 60 gusting to 90kph (although I know we had gusts higher - when my hip roof creeks I do not use my back door) so it wasn't bad. Still snowin. Often, these Noreasters come up the coast, up the Bay of Fundy and stall when they become "trapped" between the Appalachians and the cold air of the North Atlantic. I have seen large ones stall and take over three days to blow out. Snow drifts almost up to the eaves really sucks but these are only about 1.5m high.

Rain Tuesday... now, THAT sucks!

It takes those guys with really looooong names FOREVER to write their name in the snow. Sometimes we don't find them until Spring.

Yeah, Southern Ontario got hit with a shitload of blowing snow on Friday, and most people stayed home if they had any sense. Shane probably decided it would be a good time to do a few break-ins, since there wouldn't be many cops out on the roads.

Come to think of it, no...even Shane isn't quite that stupid.

So Friday was a wipeout. Saturday, on the other hand, has been clear and sunny, and I expect the roads are reasonably clear now too, but I haven't been out to check on that. I am staying home and slowly consuming the provisions. The Budgies look concerned. Their seed has run out. For now I am feeding them Romaine lettuce instead...a favorite treat of theirs.

Number 6 (biLL) had a grey glove blow away in the wind while he was tanking up his snow thrower today. If anyone in northern Maine finds it keep it until next week when he loses the other one, then you'll have a pair.

It is presently -8 C and it will drop to about -16 tonight. If I was a news outlet I would have said plummet or swoop down, not drop. However, with the coming carnage I think it best to remain calm. DON'T PANIC. Remember, dogs, raccoons and cats are edible. If you guys in the east are low on supplies, get to the jar store before it closes. That aside, if it's cold, dress warmly and if you intend to write your monikers in the snow and ever want to use your peckers again afterward, pretend your name is Al and not Jesperton Detweiler Rumhelder the Third, Esquire. If I don't post before this time tomorrow I'm either drunk and can't find the keyboard or I've gone looking for biLL's glove--or both.

Thanks to John in Scotland for starting this thread.
