On November 5, 1911, little Leonard Franklin Slye was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. To become a credit to his parents and his hometown he had to change his name. Because "Leonard Slye, King of the Cowboys" didn't have quite the necessary panache, he changed his name to "Roy Rogers."

Another good Ohio boy............I loved Roy and never missed an episode of the TV show if I could help it. Ohio was big on movie cowboys as it is also the birthplace of William Boyd who portrayed Hopalong Cassidy.

This belongs above the line!
I believe that Slye wass the only person twice inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame; once as co-founder of the Sons Of The Pioneers and once as Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy. 100 years since he was born is indeed a musical milestone to be noted!

Roy Rogers may have been the most famous man to come out of the Sons of the Pioneers, but he was not the group's leader.

Founding member and leader of the SOP was Bob Nolan, real name Robert Clarence Nobles, a Canadian.

He owed much of his fame to Gene Autry who went off to war leaving an opening for Leonard to slip into.Anyone remember his first film appearance? an outlaw who was blamed for something he didn't do.

And Nolan spent part of his youth in New Brunswick. I believe he was born in Manitoba. He wrote many of their great hits like Cool Water and Tumbling Tumbleweeds.

Perhaps this is a chance for some trivia:

             What was their brilliant guitar player Karl Farr's real name? {not fair to state it here or look it up}

It had me beat so I plead guilty to cheating. Interesting trivia indeed!
