Subject: RE: Mudcat online singaround Monday 9 PM London time From: GUEST Date: 07 Jun 20 - 06:05 AM The computer that I have been using for other Zoom sessions defaults to identifying me as just Richard. I think it's possible to change that from within the Zoom application, but maybe not in advance. Also I ought to mention that my local club, Herga, normally meets on Monday evenings (though I attend very seldom) and is currently having Zoom sessions; but there are probably several such sessions every day somewhere or other, so not to worry about clashing with someone. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat online singaround Monday 9 PM London time From: MoorleyMan Date: 07 Jun 20 - 07:47 PM I'd love to join, and will try to do so - but sad to say it clashes with two other sings on a Monday at 8 or 9pm UK time. Did anyone not consider a different timed start, say an earlier slot? Or perhaps a Thursday evening, when I've not been able to find anything much happening zoom-sing-wise... (except for very late or during the wee small hours UK time)... Hope to "see" you tomorrow Joe. |

I will keep hosting a singaround on Mondays, but I will move it to 8 PM London time. Noreen did a splendid job as co-host, by the way. Anybody want to host a second Mudcat sing on another day, maybe Thursday? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jun 20 - 12:20 AM This was absolutely what Mudcat is supposed to be. I can't believe how wonderful this gathering was. Hope to see you all again next Monday. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: MoorleyMan Date: 09 Jun 20 - 05:24 AM I'll echo that big-time, Joe, and thanks so much for getting it organised and so well steered. Great to meet so many fellow-Catters and share their songs. Already looking forward to next time. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Richard Mellish Date: 09 Jun 20 - 06:35 AM Thanks to all for organising the singaround. I chickened out after the first song of the second time around, because I've been trying to bring my waking/sleeping cycle a bit closer to the hours of daylight, though with limited success. Whichever day of the week we choose is bound to be wrong for someone. I forget how many of us were there last night, but it was enough for once round to last the best part of three hours. So Joe's idea of Mondays and Thursdays should work, with more than enough singers/musicians each time, even if a lot of us don't join in every time. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Sarah the flute Date: 09 Jun 20 - 07:48 AM What a fantastic evening - managed to stay awake until the end but well worth it. Some great songs and unusual ones I had not heard before. It will definitely be a regular slot for me. Thanks so much for organising Joe. These Zoom sessions have been great for geting back to solo singing although I still miss my fellow band members in Morrigan. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 09 Jun 20 - 09:27 AM I'll try to get to this. If one wanted to get really ambitious, how about a 24 hour worldwide singathon on a later date, then that can take into account time-zones. Will the session be on Zoom Business (300 participants) as Zoom pro is limited to 100. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 10 Jun 20 - 02:13 AM If it starts 5AM Tuesday Sydney time (Monday elsewhere, but Tuesday here), and goes on for three or four hours, does that mean if I don't get up at 5 I'll still be able to join in partway through? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jun 20 - 03:10 AM You betcha, Gerry. We really need to have people from Australia and New Zealand to make this gathering truly worldwide. As people come in, I assign them a number and we sing in numerical order. I'm hoping we can go twice around the group, even if the singaround lasts six hours. This week, we went around twice and lasted 4 hours, but I'll do my best to make sure everybody gets a chance to sing at least once. There are so many Mudcatters that I want to hear. There's a problem, though. Zoom is a memory hog. After about 3 hours, my computer gets a bit shaky and I really need to reboot. I had very bad service during the last hour of our session. I'm afraid to reboot, because I'm afraid I'll end the session and lose everybody. I'm wondering if I reassign the session to another host, if I can leave and reboot, and then rejoin the session. I had Noreen as cohost and she is certainly competent to handle anything (as many of you know). Could I have made her host and handed off to her while I rebooted? I noticed that she was getting a bit unstable toward the end, but I wonder if she had rebooted and come back and taken over as host, if then I could reboot and come back. Anybody know? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Anne Lister Date: 10 Jun 20 - 07:51 AM Just a quick note - for those there at the start on Monday and the mention of Friday 13th and the Templars - I've opened a different thread. It looks as if I'm the only one who's looked at it or contributed, so maybe my subject line isn't clear enough! I've called it "from the song circle - Friday 13th". I'll try and join in again, but my stamina wouldn't be strong enough to cope with three hours on Zoom myself. I'll happily raise a glass to those who can! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Jun 20 - 11:52 AM I'm usually in the virtual Herga club on Mondays and one of our local Dorset clubs on Thursdays, but it was good to put faces to names on Monday and I will try to look in to the Mudcat song sessions for a while - at least the time difference means I can join Mudcat after the England-based sessions finish, if I'm still awake enough! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 Jun 20 - 09:07 PM Regarding the re-boot question, Joe: a few weeks back, I was both host and quiz-mistress on our weekly family quiz when my computer suddenly froze! No cursor, nothing! I had to crash shutdown and re-boot, which took ages, then get back into Zoom - another eternity, it seemed. But when I finally got back in, everyone else was still there: they had been having a great chat in my absence. So, it seems the meeting only terminates if/when you "end meeting": you can leave and come back even if you are the host. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jun 20 - 03:33 AM Just to clarify - I'm asking if somebody else might like to host a singaround on Thursday.... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Jun 20 - 08:46 PM I'm not a frequent visitor these days, so I've only just seen this. Sounds great, and it's the kind of positive development I've been expecting to see happening with the lockdown that could maybe enrich our world when it's over. But I haven't a clue to how this Zoom thing works. No, I don't mean the techie stuff, I don't need to know that any more than I do for my iPad or my TV. But, how do I set about using it. I've got the app loaded on my iPad, but it's just sitting there. Someone point me where I can get up to speed, and join in. Or even just look in. As Joe said up the thread: "This was absolutely what Mudcat is supposed to be. " |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jun 20 - 10:26 PM Hi, Kevin - I'll post the link here on Monday, half an hour before we start at 8 PM London time. If you have a camera and a microphone on your computer or iPad, you're all set. Click the link, and Zoom will set itself up. Zoom came out with an encrypted version within the last two weeks, and that should take care of most of the security problems people were worried about. Hope to see you Monday! -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Tattie Bogle Date: 15 Jun 20 - 01:50 PM A couple of useful videos for anyone unfamiliar with Zoom, and how to improve it for music use: (not sure why the second one is so much longer, when there's actually less that you can do!!) 1. For PCs/Macs/laptops Zoom for PCs etc 2. For iPads/tablets/phones: Zoom for iPads/tablets/phones And one other thing: best to install Zoom on your device, which you can do any time before the meeting starts: if you do that, then all you need to do is, at the appointed time, open the Zoom software,go to "Join a Meeting" and use the meeting number and password. You don't need the long url if you do it that way: I know of several people who have failed to get in as they used the long url where they should have put the meeting number! May see you later! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Mrrzy Date: 15 Jun 20 - 02:14 PM Saved offline in case mudcat goes down YAY can hardly wait! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Acorn4 Date: 15 Jun 20 - 02:21 PM I'll try to come along tonight if I'm recognised (haven't done the bit signing in with an alias yet. If you're using a PC or laptop these tips might be useful. The problem with Zoom is that it was designed for conferencing not singing. It interprets long held notes or instruments as background noise and tries to cut them out. On the main screen normally at the top left (usually) there is a tab which says "turn on original sound" - make sure this is "on". Go into audio settings:- unclick "auto adjust volume" You can adjust your own and incoming voluem here. Go into "Advanced" Make sure "enable original sound" is "on". Disable both settings for background noise (persistent and the other one) leave "echo cancellation" enabled. These settings should save themselves but it pays to check each session.. Hope this helps. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays 8 PM London From: Jim Carroll Date: 16 Jun 20 - 03:15 AM "nothing starts in Ireland till 10 aT THE EARLIEST" Tends to be balanced by the fact that nothing finishes before 2-am; will be interesting to find if anything has changed When we visited Ireland then returned home to London before we moved here permanently, it took us two weeks to get used to the time-zone difference - it was like having jet-lag, only we always drove over and crossed on the ferry Jim |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays, 8 London time From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 23 Jun 20 - 04:44 AM Hi Joe Thanks for another great session. My apologies for being dogged with tech problems last night - a combination of my pc freezing, and slowing down a few times (robot in a tin box syndrome!) and internet destabilising. While it is frustrating when this happens, it can be amusing watching the feed catch up, a bit like fast forwards on a DVD player. I have been enjoying on line sessions - this one and others in UK, and I think I must be close to singing more times than all the 12 years since I left the Shanty Crew combined - I think I am even beginning to get the power in my voice back (a year ago I would have struggled to get to the end of a song before my voice starts cracking up). Just need to work on my memory as I seem to be forgetting the odd line of everything I used to do. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays, 8 London time From: JennieG Date: 23 Jun 20 - 09:11 PM I would love to join in, but geez......5 a.m. is stupid dark early o'clock here, being in winter as we currently are. Besides which, who has a singing voice at that hour? Not me, for sure; I'm not a morning person at the best (or the worst) of times. But I know how to Zoom. We have a family trivia quiz every Sunday evening on Zom with our son, DIL and The One And Only Grandkid, and son's in-laws, all of whom live two days' drive away. DIL is a music teacher so has been using Zoom with her pupils. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays, 8 London time From: Mrrzy Date: 28 Jun 20 - 01:40 PM JennieG, we tend to be there for 5 hours or more, so could you come in at 7 or 8? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays, 8 London time From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 28 Jun 20 - 07:50 PM JennieG, that's what I've done the last two weeks, from Sydney. I join around 7:30am, and it goes for another two hours or so. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays, 8 London time From: leeneia Date: 28 Jun 20 - 11:56 PM Susan, here's my non-expert advice on how to get started; Put Zoom.us in your URL box. (Note the dot after Zoom) Fill in your e-mail address. Click on "sign up for free" Follow the prompts down the rabbit hole. What you are doing is setting up a free Zoom account for yourself so you can call and join meetings in the future. It worked for me. ==================== When it's time for the sing-a-round, get your camera, microphone and earphones (if any) plugged in and ready. When it's 8 pm in London and 3 pm in New York, a link to the session will appear here. Copy the link into your URL box, and it will take you to the session. Click 'join with audio' or something like that. It's pretty clear what to do. This is one hour before the official start, but people like to chat. The sessions are pretty long, so don't worry if you miss the start. I plan to be there. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays, 8 London time From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jun 20 - 12:05 AM OK, so I'm giving up on the practice of sending personal messages to everyone who has posted to this thread. I've built an email list and I will be sending out a link to Monday's singaround within half an hour. I think I have correct email addresses for everyone, except the honorable Black Belt Caterpillar Wrestler and Acorn4. If you'd like to be put on the email list, email me, joe@mudcat.org Looking forward to singing with you tomorrow. If we're lucky, maybe Mrzzy will sing something in Hungarian for us. Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Mrrzy Date: 01 Jul 20 - 08:29 AM Oh, lucky, eh? Thanks, Joe! And thanks, Yorkshire Yankee! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jul 20 - 03:24 AM I've sent out the email for Monday's singaround. If you didn't get one, contact me by email, joe@mudcat.org. JennieG, the email I sent you got returned. Hope to see you all Monday.. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 05 Jul 20 - 04:52 AM Hi Joe, hope to be there tomorrow nght, but I have to go to a zoom committee meeting before hand - because AGMs have been postponed/cancelled, I haven't found a way of getting out of this one. I will probably arrive about 10:00pm my time. Vikki, your multi-lingual lyrics reminds me of a version we collectively wrote in the Shanty Crew when we were kicking our heels in our hotel after we had fininshed our afternoon sets and waiting for the pub to open for the evening session at Lancaster Maritime Festrival. That one was a bit x-rated referring to 'Sheep in galoshes and nuns in black leather' and the instrumental bridge between the verses 'Nudge nudge nudge, wink wink wink' - referring to Monty Python. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Mrrzy Date: 05 Jul 20 - 08:12 AM If somebody could sing Power and Glory that'd be great. I can't, my throat closes. Emotional. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jul 20 - 03:10 AM I hope everybody who wanted email notification of Monday's singaround, got it. If you didn't get an email from me and wanted one, please email me, joe@mudcat.org - but you probably won't get one tomorrow, because I won't have time to deal with email. I teach a class on Monday that ends at the exact time I open the doors for the singaround. I'll post the link a couple of hours before the singaround, but I don't want to post it too early because of the nuisance of Zoom bombing. See y'all tomorrow, -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Noreen Date: 06 Jul 20 - 02:05 PM I've posted the link on the Mudcat Facebook page too. Only just, as I've just got back from a walk on the beach after spending the weekend with my son and d-i-l: first visit for many months :) :) :> |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 10 Jul 20 - 09:10 AM Any plans to make this permanant after lockdowns have finished? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Tattie Bogle Date: 10 Jul 20 - 06:57 PM Leeneia: the phone numbers are auto-generated by the Zoom website when they produce the invitation, so the host only has to copy the invite! (Not to belittle anything that Joe has done in setting up these sessions as they are great!) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Jul 20 - 07:55 PM I am all for not stopping these! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jul 20 - 08:10 PM Yeah, we used to do this in the 1990s with primitive technology. Now it's so easy. I think we need to keep this going forever. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: YorkshireYankee Date: 12 Jul 20 - 11:09 PM Thanks to Mrrzy and Tattie Bogle for the kind words. SPB-Cooperator, your song sounds like fun! It's really been fabulous getting to see and hear the people behind the online names, and hear some gorgeous singing and wonderful songs. Echoing the thanks to Joe, Noreen and Casey for doing the nuts and bolts that make this possible! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround Mondays on Zoom From: Noreen Date: 13 Jul 20 - 06:06 AM I’m thoroughly enjoying it too Joe, Seeing and hearing friends old and new from all over the world is just amazing! And being Mudcat, it’s not just “thanks for your song and on to the next “, there’s room for discussion about the song and its history, which is what I love. And last week Max popped in to see what was going on... I hope you’ll be able to stay long enough to give us a song next time Max :) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - NOW!!! From: Mrrzy Date: 13 Jul 20 - 03:09 PM Sing for me too! Hear you all next week... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - NOW!!! From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 13 Jul 20 - 08:22 PM Joe, RThanks for another great evening. I was surprised that you had a copy of Killie's book. I got my copy on preorder so I got my autographyed copy more or less on the day it was published. I've known Michael Kilgariff for years, from his time as Chairman at the Player's Theatre, and he took rehearsal one night for the music hall company I used to belong to. To say that he is above average height is an understatement. 6'5". He has had numerous TV appearances - perhaps most famousd as the Cyber Controller in Doctor Who (Patrick Troughton and Coloin Baker eras). |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - Mondays From: GUEST,Jack Cole Date: 14 Jul 20 - 12:47 PM Thanks for welcoming me to the circle last evening. It was wonderful to hear so many great songs and feel the energy of the group. Stay well, everyone. - Jack, the lone Canadian. (Although 2 Bill Gallaher songs made me very proud!) |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - Mondays From: Bearheart Date: 18 Jul 20 - 05:39 PM So I am just seeing this. not on Mudcat as much as I used to be. Did the Thursday session idea go nowhere? A much better time for me. As it happens, my friend Debra Chesman here in the Finger Lakes/Central New York had a similar idea and we are doing a trans-Atlantic song circle at exactly the same time. Plus I have another Zoom meeting following that one. But I would love to hear the voices of people whose posts I've been reading, all these years. Bekki |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Jul 20 - 09:27 AM Mmmaybe we could, sometimes, do it on another day? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - Mondays From: GUEST,Cujimmy Date: 19 Jul 20 - 10:36 AM Or what about doing it twice a week, there are loads of us on Mudcat so I bet lots of people cant make it on Monday and its a pity when they have to miss out. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jul 20 - 09:43 PM I think I'm going to stick with Monday, and see how that goes for a while. I don't have the time or energy to do two a week myself, but I'll help anybody who wants to host a second gathering. Email invitations should be out in just a few minutes. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom - Mondays From: Bearheart Date: 19 Jul 20 - 10:16 PM Thanks, Joe. I got the invite. I need to figure out whether to join Monday or not... The other group is pretty small and intimate still -- only about 15 people most times, and I'm just getting to know folks and be comfortable with them. I'm pretty shy by nature, and it takes an effort to sing in front of strangers. But you may see me one of these days. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom-Today!!! From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 20 Jul 20 - 12:49 PM Looks like I can make it about one week in three, which means not this week I'm afraid. Have fun everyone! Robin |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom-Today!!! From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 21 Jul 20 - 05:26 AM SOng/Parody lesson 101 - If you are going to perform what you have written, make sure that the tune is within your vocal range (as I learned out last night!!!!). |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom-Today!!! From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 21 Jul 20 - 08:36 AM SRS, I've been posting to Mudcat for at least 15 years now, as a guest. I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member. I know the Lawson poem is in the DT, but there are mistakes. The other day, I posted a list of the bigger mistakes to the DT corrections thread. Mudcat is always the first place I go to find lyrics, but then I check them against recordings and other sources if I can. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom-Today!!! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Jul 20 - 09:46 AM Keep letting Joe know what the corrections should be and thanks! There is never going to be one place with all of the lyrics, it is a process, isn't it? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom-Monday!!! From: Bearheart Date: 22 Jul 20 - 06:00 PM Still hoping someone else who feels motivated will figure out a Thursday Mudcat sing... I already host 2 other Zoom sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights and I am getting ready to start hosting a monthly ballad session for the local group that had been meeting in my living room prior to COVID. So I'm a bit maxxed out on putting something together. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on Zoom-Monday!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jul 20 - 07:52 PM Email coming soon, but I've seen no volunteers to host Thursday. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - Doors open NOW!!!! From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 27 Jul 20 - 08:34 PM If all goes well, www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=62636#1013709 will link to Lyr Add: WEE POT STOVE (Harry Robertson) From: Bob Bolton Date: 05 Sep 03 - 10:52 PM where Bob posted the lyrics to Wee Pot Stove as Robertson wrote and recorded them, and as I attempted to sing them at the singaround. They differ in a few places from the lyrics in the DT which, I think, follow Nic Jones' recording on Penguin Eggs. Sorry I couldn't get the blue clicky to make a working link to a post on this site. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Noreen Date: 28 Jul 20 - 05:45 AM Some feedback from the most recent sing on Monday 27th July. I made a note of 55 names who joined in, not all singing/performing as audience are welcome too. People started arriving at 7.30pm UK time for a chat and sound checks as necessary. Singing started at 8pm (or so) and carried on until well after midnight when I had to go get some sleep. People are numbered on arrival and get an opportunity to sing in order, though we can be flexible for those who have to leave early etc. Joe tries to allow everyone to have two songs throughout the night, and latecomers will always have a chance to sing at least once. It is amazing to see so many Mudcatters from around the world in all their different time zones, weather conditions and surroundings. I'm loving it! It's never going to be ideal timing for everyone worldwide. The sing does however continue for over 4 hours- 8pm to well after midnight UK time- so there is a chance for those from many time zones to take part. We have had regular participants from Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, UK and USA which is quite an achievement! And a Pole in Scotland :) (OK, who have I forgotten this time?!) So, feel free to pop in next Monday (or Tuesday morning in the antipodes), you will be very welcome! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 28 Jul 20 - 09:01 AM Who sang Sister Susan had a pig etc? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jul 20 - 09:13 AM I'm thinking that was Sadie Damascus, Mrr. You'd love her. As I said about her, you can expect her to sing unexpected songs. She's brilliant, but don't tell her I said that. I've recently beat her at a few games of Words With Fiiends. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 28 Jul 20 - 05:29 PM Joe, it was a man, white, with white whiskers. I need it sung again to get a handle on the tune. I can't read music. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jul 20 - 08:26 PM Oh, I think that was Charlie Baum (click to message). He's another one who sings unexpected songs. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Noreen Date: 29 Jul 20 - 07:50 AM Charlie Baum wasn't there this week Joe- unless he came in after I left, and I heard the Susan/pig song. Wish I could think who it was- it was someone who sang before I did, so it was 18 or earlier. I have a note of the names if that would help.

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GUEST,Rob Mad Jock Wright Date: 31 Jul 20 - 11:13 AM in a good attempt to keep musicians active their Sunday Social going and of course a bit of focus on the Twa Tams Bar in Perth Scotland, the owners Mad Ferret invite regulars to zap in a tune or two. They then select and stream on Sundays. It is a bit of fun and the quality of the music like that played at the Twa Tams is usually high. So if you want a listen catch it live Sundays around 5.00pm or 6 pm if things go awry. Or you can get it on Youtube somewhere by searching. They sometimes have a 'raffle' the first to message once they start gets a prize. One week it was a toilet roll! The next it was a toilet seat (new of course)! So you can tell that it is a bit of fun. |

Anyone wishing to join us - PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send an invite.

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 04 Aug 20 - 10:59 AM I don't know if I have already mentioned it, but I think I have been to more zoom song sessions than I have to folk clubs for the last 5 years. Zoom gets round the need to be motivated to get outside and catch various tubes and/or buses so I can enjoy a pint. One club I went to a couple of year back was fine getting back to central London after but then having to catch 2 night buses to get home!! However, it is harder to perform rathar than just sing. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Richard Mellish Date: 16 Aug 20 - 08:53 AM I'm sorry I've missed the last two. Two Mondays ago I had got stuck into something or other (even if I now forget what it was) and didn't feel like stopping. Last time, shortly before the singaround was due to start I went to close my back door. It had been sticking for a while and now it would not close at all. Fiddling with the hinges to persuade it to close before I went to bed took priority over anything else that evening. Not sure whether I'll make it tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Aug 20 - 04:23 PM We miss you when you're not there, Richard. You sing interesting songs. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Aug 20 - 01:50 PM Singaround emails have been sent out. I post the URL for the Singaround here about 2 hours before we start, but don't want to post it publicly earlier. If I forget, maybe Noreen will remember and post it here. If you'd like to be on the email list, email me at joe@mudcat.org Hope to sing with you tomorrow! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 23 Aug 20 - 05:20 PM Just dropped in on a whim, after spending a fair amount of time on Chiff and Fipple and latterly wasting vast amounts of time on Twitter over the last few years. Delighted to see there are some familiar names still showing up, and totally unsurprised to see Joe still doing that public-service thing. And almost nostalgic to see that my old work email address popped up when I logged in again, given that I retired in 2011. I originally ventured into the Café on a work-related mission, believe it or not: a senior official in my workplace wanted to quote some verses of "The maid of Aughrim" in a speech, and I was blown away by how, within 24 hours, Catters in different parts of the world came up with more information than I could possibly use. So a worldwide singaround sounds particularly appropriate. I drifted away from the Mudcat for a variety of reasons, one of which I won't go into, but also because, as a non-singer, I always felt like a bit of a chancer with little to contribute, and C&F became a better fit. I might listen in to one of the next Zoomarounds. BTW, does a surgical circumcision count, Joe? ;-) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 23 Aug 20 - 11:24 PM What other kind of circumcision is there? No but seriously, any genre requests? I can't think of what I want to sing... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Aug 20 - 12:28 AM You're welcome to come in and listen and say hello, APC. Link will be in this thread 2 hours before, or you can email me if you want to be on the weekly notification list. Yeah, I guess I'm still doing the "public service thing." I hope it helps. joe@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Mrrzy Date: 24 Aug 20 - 11:35 AM Joe, it totally totally helps! Thanks! Stay out of the fires! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Noreen Date: 24 Aug 20 - 05:26 PM Still going strong, come join us! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Aug 20 - 09:50 PM Another wonderful gathering. Thank you all for coming. See you next Monday. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: leeneia Date: 25 Aug 20 - 12:40 AM I enjoy the singarounds. I don't get nervous; it's as relaxing as singing for little kids. Today I fluffed a line and it didn't bother me a bit. I enjoy the variety of songs, and I like it that Joe posts the words whenever he can. Thanks, Joe. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Aug 20 - 12:43 AM It was a nice assortment of songs today! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Monique Date: 25 Aug 20 - 02:50 AM I enjoy it a lot. Like Leeneia I enjoy the variety of songs and the lyrics in the chat. I regret I can't stay longer and sing another song as I'm not supposed to make noise after 10pm (1pm Pacific time) but it'd be far too late anyway. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Waddon Pete Date: 25 Aug 20 - 03:13 AM Another lovely session! Thanks folks and special thanks to Joe for your hard work behind the scenes. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Noreen Date: 25 Aug 20 - 04:04 AM This regular sing is encouraging me to refresh songs from way back, sometimes because of mentions here on Mudcat, sometimes after my memory has been jogged by other songs sung or discussions between songs. As leeneia says above, it is a safe place to perform with a VERY interested and supportive audience, all in our own rooms around the world. I still find it amazing that I take part in an event with other performers from so many other countries in so many time zones. Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GUEST Date: 25 Aug 20 - 04:23 AM So sorry to have missed this week but had some work committments and a deadline that took priority. Hope to be there next week. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Sarah the flute Date: 25 Aug 20 - 04:24 AM ooops that was me in last post - didn't realise I'd been logged out! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Richard Mellish Date: 25 Aug 20 - 05:17 AM In the chat before yesterday's session, Paul Clarke posted this: " I'm planting this little 'bomb' to see if it creates any buzz among you: Mudcat Zoom session, with a theme of songs/tunes within songs. Songs that reference other music would be sung, and broken off at the appropriate point for [I'd moot] another performer to render the mentioned tune, or in the case of a song, to segue one after the other. I think I've listed, or been triggered to note but forgotten to[!], about 15 of these, but with all the Cat brains jointly at work on the idea, I'm sure many more would crop up. Perhaps needs a couple of weeks' notice, esp. to tout for the musical partner, but worth considering? When I get back, I may ask the question again, with some examples. Meantime, what does Joe O and others think of it." That could indeed be fun, but it will certainly need considerable advance planning to identify the relevant songs and tunes and the personnel to perform them. Paul, if you see this, please post your list to save us racking our brains for examples that you've already thought of. The only one that I can think of immediately is Byker Hill and Walker Shore referring to "the tune of Elsie Marley". |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GUEST,Mysha Date: 25 Aug 20 - 06:30 AM Are we supposed to remember all the tunes in The Devil went down to Georgia, or The Galway shawl, or the Monkeys wedding? Mysha |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GUEST,Mysha Date: 25 Aug 20 - 06:37 AM Monique, maybe you can do something less loudly? Recite a poem, tell a story if the host allows. You're not limited to the chat like I am, so there must be ways to perform even if you're not supposed to make noise. (Well, listening to others would obviously fall in the no-=noise category as well.) Bye Mysha |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: rosma Date: 25 Aug 20 - 06:43 AM Richard, Galway Shawl ('I played "The Blackbird" and "The Stack of Barley", "Rodney's Glory" and "The Foggy Dew"') gives some serious scope. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GUEST,Mysha Date: 25 Aug 20 - 07:15 AM I guess this is more something for a Songs in Song thread. Is there such a thing? 'The band played "Waltzing Matilda"' would also fall in that category. Bye Mysha |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: MoorleyMan Date: 25 Aug 20 - 07:29 AM It's a fun idea, Paul, and might yield some interesting examples, but I agree with Mysha, more suitable for a discussion thread than an actual performance, which would be unwieldy to say the least, even if the sequential and overlap issues of zoom could be overcome. It's indicative tho', that almost all of the examples that spring readily to mind involve traditional tunes - and several of them are already done as "song-tune combis" in performance. Midnight on the Water, steady and slow... With "songs within songs" tho', a full combi rendition would be less satisfying simply because of the desired effect of the placing within the original creation, IMHO. Take the above-mentioned Waltzing Matilda, which has its own designated placing and Purpose. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe_F Date: 25 Aug 20 - 05:38 PM I think I started a songs-mentioning-songs thread a while ago, but I can't find it. One had better be careful to exclude songs (such as "Turkey in the Straw") that mention themselves, which could lead to an infinity of self-interruptions. Anyway: The Whiffenpoof Song mentions "Shall I Wasting" and "Mavourneen" and the rest. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: An Pluiméir Ceolmhar Date: 25 Aug 20 - 05:53 PM Thank you, Joe and Noreen. I'll listen in one of these Mondays coming up. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 26 Aug 20 - 07:15 AM There is "The broadside man" as another example of songs named (or at least described) within a song. I always thought that it could be expanded as an album. On the same theme, I have my "Harbour Wall" song on YouTube now with some of my fathers photos. I did think that because each verse covers a different aspect and time in the history of the harbour, it would be an idea to use each verse as an intro to other songs covering the same idea. Robin |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 29 Aug 20 - 10:31 PM Reilly is warbling I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen, which is inspiring me to think of what to sing on Monday... One More Time! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: pattyClink Date: 31 Aug 20 - 10:55 PM Thanks for the very kind welcome and encouragement on my first zoom try at the singaround today. Sorry I am dim about seeing chat messages but my machine shows the text at about 1-point size, and if I boost it to 2-point by going full screen I can hear my hard drive overheating. Anyway, there was an old thread about the Willow Tree song, so I posted lyrics with chords over on that in case anybody wants to have a go at it. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: leeneia Date: 01 Sep 20 - 11:31 AM Well, Patty, if you can't see the chat, then you missed the many compliments you received for a fine song and a sweet voice. One compliment was mine. Thanks for singing. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: pattyClink Date: 01 Sep 20 - 01:34 PM Thanks, leeneia! I did squint in and see some kind remarks, and tried to send a few remarks of my own. But, I did not realize when I was being 'paged' by Joe and could not 'keep an eye' on the text feed. I will have to study up and see what I can adjust. I was blown away by all the wonderful songs and singers I heard. Including your 'Dog Days', I hope you have posted it on the 'cat or will soon! I had hoped to go to several festivals and run some song sessions this year, and those plans got blown to bits. So this is such a wonderful thing to see and hear. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Tattie Bogle Date: 01 Sep 20 - 06:58 PM Have missed too many! Been going through a bad patch with my hearing lately, (Meniere's Diease) but after that last injection, might be up for next week. Enjoyed those I have attended so far. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Sep 20 - 11:01 PM I emailed the invitations for Monday's singaround. If you didn't get an invitation and would like to attend, contact me by email, or watch this space on Monday for the link - for security reasons, I don't post the link publicly until just before the singaround. Hope to see you there. Joe Offer joe@mudcat.org |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Sep 20 - 08:52 PM We missed you, Mrr. It was a good session. Come back next week. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 08 Sep 20 - 09:27 AM I was about to ask what'd I miss? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Richard Mellish Date: 08 Sep 20 - 10:29 AM Some Zoom sessions are recorded and made available subsequently through YouTube or otherwise. Is this a possibility for the Mudcat Singaround? A few singers might want the recording paused for their bits, but I think most of us would be OK about being recorded, and it would give everyone the chance to catch up on whatever we've missed -- if we can find the time, of course. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Felipa Date: 09 Sep 20 - 12:59 PM I had already thought about how some Zoom events are also on youtube, and I concluded that it was a good thing that the Mudcat singaround isn't ... the quality - or should I say expertise - is very variable, which doesn't matter when we are a circle of friends but could be uncomfortable if we are exposed to anybody and everybody on line. Much as it would interest me to hear myself later, on the whole I prefer the privacy of an ephemeral session. What I would like to have is a Mudcat thread run by the moderators, which would give a list each week of which songs were sung that Monday. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Sep 20 - 11:39 PM The chat has almost all the lyrics to all the songs that were sung. I could post them if there's an interest, but it's easy to save the chat yourself. I've asked about recording the session, but too many people were reluctant about that. Anybody who attends can save the chat to their own computer. -Joe- I sent emails with Monday's URL out on Saturday. If you didn't get an invitation and would like to attend, email me. joe@mudcat.org (if you'd like copies of the chat from previous sessions, email me) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!! From: GerryM Date: 14 Sep 20 - 05:33 AM If you don't join at the start, then you can only see and save the chat from the time you join (unless I'm missing some clever dodge). Joining at 7:30am Sydney time, I get to save roughly the second half of the chat. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!! From: Richard Mellish Date: 14 Sep 20 - 06:00 AM I agree with Felipa about the variable quality/expertise/whatever you prefer to call it, but the same probably applies to most online singarounds, as indeed it does to in-person sessions when those are possible. If a session is to be recorded, anyone who wishes should be able to have the recording paused, whether because they feel that they're not very good or for any other reason (or no reason at all). That is how it works for Sharp's singarounds; but in practice I think few if any do request a pause. But anyway Joe has sounded out participants for the Mudcat one so I won't pursue it beyond this post. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!! From: leeneia Date: 14 Sep 20 - 07:10 PM It was another enjoyable session. Thanks to the organizers. I had a doctor's appt beforehand, and while I was waiting, I sang my song to warm up my voice. One might as well make use of the time. By the way, I had to visit the ER mid-week, and while the DH and I waited in our room, we heard people laughing in the hall several times. This is not the view of an ER that we get from the media. (I came out okay.) I have a question: during the Singaround, does the volume I set on the sliding bar of my own computer affect the volume at which my song goes out, or does Zoom make sure my volume is good? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!! From: Noreen Date: 15 Sep 20 - 04:00 AM Your listening volume has no effect on what goes out, leeneia. There are various settings you can adjust to make your sound the best it can be- if you join the session early next time (before we start singing) you can try adjusting settings and get feedback on what works best. Another lovely session last night, thanks all! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: leeneia Date: 15 Sep 20 - 12:22 PM Thank you for the information, Noreen. Apparently my sound settings are acceptable. Zoom seemed a little peculiar on Monday - people's pictures popped up and then disappeared, even though they were not singing at the time, and twice it tried to sign out of the session without my asking it to. But I suppose Zoom's system is under a lot of pressure now. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Sep 20 - 03:14 AM I just sent out the emails with this week's link. If you didn't get one and would like to attend, email me, joe@mudcat.org Hope to sing with you soon. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 20 Sep 20 - 02:52 PM What was RBG's fave folk song? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Sep 20 - 07:29 AM RBG and Scalia were notorious opera fans. Don't know that she spent much time on folk. See the RBG movie. The part on opera was delightful. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Sep 20 - 12:43 PM I sang "Miner's Lifeguard" and "Life's Railway to Heaven," which both use the same melody in the US. I understand that "Miner's Lifeguard" is sung to a different melody in Great Britain. I'd sure like to hear that different melody. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Noreen Date: 22 Sep 20 - 06:30 AM Sorry I missed it Joe, I’d be interested in your tune to the miner’s lifeguard. Hope all went well in my absence! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Sep 20 - 12:55 PM Hi, Noreen - we missed you, but we muddled through. I think we had a total of 44 people yesterday. Here's the seminal US recording of "Miner's Lifeguard," by Pete Seeger and the Almanac Singers: Here's an English recording by Bob Fox and Benny Graham, which uses the same melody: Here's a great choral performance by Brian Connick and Cor Meibion Onllwyn (Onllwyn Male Voice Choir): Maybe I'm mistaken and maybe the US and UK use the same melody for this song. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Sep 20 - 11:21 AM Invitations for Monday have been emailed. If you didn't get one and would like to be on our email list, contact me at joe@mudcat.org. Hope to sing with you Monday! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Noreen Date: 26 Sep 20 - 07:06 PM Re: the Miners' Lifeguard Joe, those three versions (great stuff!) were of the same tune, as is this one sung by the Wilsons. Apparently this song shares a melody with the traditional Appalachian song "Life's Railroad to Heaven." |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Sep 20 - 10:10 PM Yeah, Noreen, I thought I heard there was a Welsh melody used for "Miner's Lifeguard," but I can't find it. My memory sometimes gets scrambled. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 28 Sep 20 - 11:04 AM I may be late to the Singaround this week, roadtripping out for lunch. I can listen on the way back, though! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround-Cancelled Monday Oct 5 From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Oct 20 - 04:46 PM I'm Zoom-attending the annual Getaway of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington this weekend, and I realize that a good half of our regular Mudcat Singaround singers are attending, too. Rather than conflict with the last day of the Getaway, we've decided to cancel Monday's Mudcat Worldwide Singaround. See you next week, Monday, October 12. You can join us at the Getaway. It's a wonderful gathering, and Mudcatters have been attending since 1999. Register here: |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround-Cancelled Monday Oct 5 From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Oct 20 - 04:50 PM We'll miss you, Gerry. The Getaway is wonderful, and so many of our regular Singaround singers found their way to the Getaway. Many are on the tech staff, or are leading workshops. I had so much fun leading the dogs workshop with Dawn Berg (she was the adult in the room). -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Felipa Date: 13 Oct 20 - 05:12 PM I suggest it would be nice to sometimes have a theme for the night. It wouldn't be obligatory; but if people are invited in advance to sing a song relating to a given topic, I expect many of the singers would oblige. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Tattie Bogle Date: 13 Oct 20 - 06:40 PM We had quite a lot of autumnal/seasonal/October songs on our local Zoom session tonight, and later this month will be Hallowe'en! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 14 Oct 20 - 01:37 PM This Monday will be my last in the folk 'wilderness' this time it will be me in transit arriving at Gatwick about 10:30 pm London time, then 2-3 hours to get home. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 20 - 03:00 PM Hi, Felipa I go to another weekly singaround that has themes. It can be nice, bu I'm not inclined to require it for the Mudcat Singaround. I see singers often inspire each other and carry a theme along, and I think I prefer that sort of spontaneity. Cheers! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Oct 20 - 03:46 PM I just got an email from Pelagie, asking what time we'll be starting this coming Monday. The UK goes to standard time this Sunday, 25 October. I suppose the same applies to Ireland and the rest of the EU. Am I correct? The US goes to standard time on Sunday, November 1. The math confounds me here. This coming Monday, if we start the singaround at 8 PM London time (which is what I'm inclined to do), what time will it be in California? -Joe, puzzled- It appears from the converter below that on October 26, it will be 8 PM London time and 1 PM California time. https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20201026T200000&p1=136&p2=4962 |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Felipa Date: 14 Oct 20 - 05:15 PM Joe, Ireland follows Greenwich time, but in France etc. it is an hour different and if they have "summer time" ("daylight savings time" in US). There was talk of the E.U. doing away with seasonal time changes for member states in future. re themes, I suggested having occasional theme nights, not weekly and that the theme would not be obligatory. I did enjoy the themed sessions at the virtual Getaway. There the theme was pretty much obligatory but in some cases very widely interpreted. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Oct 20 - 02:33 AM Because we have a number of singers in the UK who come in late, I'm going to schedule the Singaround according to London time this coming Monday. So the Singaround will start as usual at 8 PM London time, but at 1 PM Los Angeles Time and 4 PM New York time. I'll be sending out the email in a few minutes. See you Monday. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: GerryM Date: 17 Oct 20 - 06:08 AM Isn't London eight hours later than Los Angeles? (or am I overlooking some Standard vs Daylight Savings thing?) |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Richard Mellish Date: 17 Oct 20 - 07:33 AM > Isn't London eight hours later than Los Angeles? (or am I overlooking some Standard vs Daylight Savings thing?) Normally it's eight hours, but not in the brief period when one is on daylight saving and the other isn't. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Oct 20 - 02:36 PM Well, I screwed that up, as Bev Praver gently told me. The discrepancy in time changes happens on Monday, October 26. And on THAT day, the Singaround will start at 1 PM Pacific Time and 4 PM Eastern, and 8 PM London time. But this coming Monday is October 19, and it will be at the usual times. Sorry for the confusion. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Tim Chesterton Date: 20 Oct 20 - 03:25 AM Bit of shameless self-promotion here: Thanks to those who were saying nice things about my own original tune for 'Cold Blow and the Rainy Night' at the singaround today. If you like it, it's on my CD 'Folk Songs and Renovations.' You can get the single track here. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: leeneia Date: 21 Oct 20 - 02:31 PM Once upon a time, my voice teacher gave me a tip about stage fright. She said there is bound to be at least one person in the audience who wishes you well and looks friendly. Focus on that person. Now, the week before last, I was singing and looking for that person, and I realized to my dismay that most of the faces I saw were not people, but photographs. I suppose they were people who didn't want to listen to others, just to sing themselves. So they ambled off to walk the dog or balance their checkbook, leaving their lifeless picture in their place. Pfui. Last Monday, I am happy to say, there were many more live people in place, and I felt better about singing my song. Keep up the good work, everybody. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: Sarah the flute Date: 21 Oct 20 - 02:46 PM And it was a very lovely song you sang and well sung too on Monday! I do try to stay live on Zoom unless it is absolutely necessary to switch off video because I think this is what you would do in a real folk club if you spent your evening there ....plus you never know what you might miss. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: pattyClink Date: 21 Oct 20 - 04:06 PM Oh, leeneia, don't despair and think people aren't interested in hearing the other singers. The session lasts 5 hours, and that's a very long time to sit in rapt attention with an encouraging look on one's face. I cut my video every now and then while I take a break for a snack or bathroom break or stretch, or just be 'at ease', and I'd rather mute my video and still hear the singer, than have the singer see me scratch myself or fork down some food. I think you just had the bad luck to be in the spotlight when too many people were taking a break. We love hearing you!!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Waddon Pete Date: 21 Oct 20 - 04:50 PM Hear hear! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Tattie Bogle Date: 21 Oct 20 - 06:45 PM The other thing is, that if people are having problems with their broadband connection, it helps to switch off the video and just use the audio, so don't take it personally if people are not all avidly watching: or they might be having their supper and don't want to be seen stuffing their faces...! I might bring my knitting next week, or do my ironing! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Oct 20 - 07:05 PM It people are singing and having connection problems, I will sometimes switch off their video so the sound comes through better. This is not meant as an insult (usually ;-) They should feel free to switch their video back on once they're finished singing. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: leeneia Date: 22 Oct 20 - 12:16 PM Thanks, Sarah. I'm glad you liked it. I thought my voice sounded pretty bad, (it being ragweed season) but now I think that since we are right on top of our own voices, so to speak, we hear minor imperfections that listeners do not. I encountered the same thing with a recorder once. I made a tape of myself, and I sounded better than I thought I did. But I wish I had a clear, reliable voice like you, Schlomo and Noreen. ============== As for the other matter, it's hard to believe that 80 or 90% of the group had an errand at the same time. And attention doesn't have to be avid; it's enough if a person moves a little once in a while. But that's over now. People were back for the last session. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Oct 20 - 12:23 AM Hi, Everyone - I hope you will be able to join us for Monday's Mudcat Worldwide Singaround on 26 Oct It will be at the usual 8 PM London time, but an hour later than usual in the rest of the world (1 PM Los Angeles, 4 PM New York) - due to the vagaries of the change from Daylight Savings Time. We'll be back in sync next week. Could be interesting - Casey and I have been threatened with an electric power blackout, but Noreen and others have volunteered to fill in if we can't make it. See you Monday. I sent out the email just now. If you'd like to be included on the email list, contact me, joe@mudcat.org For security reasons, we change the URL/address of the singaround every week, and post the URL here in this thread for only a short time. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 01 Nov 20 - 08:14 AM I've noticed that their are quite a few parodies about trump floating round. I know we don't do themes, but with the looming election and the gloom and doom around the world if anyone has any they can share it might lend itself to some much needed levity... On a selfish note, preferably after I am able to get to the session. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Nov 20 - 10:18 AM Oh I got levity planned. And some truly foul language. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom TODAY!!! From: voyager Date: 02 Nov 20 - 07:48 PM I got-a-way with this Mudcat Hootenanny Tonight. What a hoot. Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom Mondays From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Nov 20 - 11:02 PM Another delightful singaround. I'm glad Tim/Voyager came and sang the version of 'Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night' that was passed on through his family. I think I'll take up that version myself, but I wanted to hear if from somebody who knew it first. Such wonderful singing and such nice people, every Monday. -Joe- |

We start singing at Noon Los Angeles, 3 PM New York, and 8 PM London time. And some hardy souls from New Zealand and Australia will join us at the crack of dawn Tuesday. Doors open half an hour beforehand for cocktails and conversation. We sing two times around the group, which takes 4 to 5 hours, and then we have a cocktail hour afterwards. I've emailed out the link for Monday's sing just now. If you're not on the list and would like to be, contact me by email, joe@mudcat.org. Hope to sing with you soon. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Worldwide Singaround - On Zoom NOW! From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Jan 21 - 08:26 PM Looks like we had 53 people today, and it was a lovely gathering. Somebody requested that we not sing political songs, and I said that was not a request I could honor. That person left. That's too bad. We had a few political songs, and a lot of others. I would say that the atmosphere wasn't overly political, but we generally don't suppress anything. We let people choose whatever songs they want to sing. We limit conversation so we can get in lots of singing, but we really can't ban political songs. Thanks for coming, everyone. -Joe- |
