Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: GUEST,999 Date: 09 May 10 - 04:38 PM Ebbie has nailed it. The black fly should be Canada`s national bird. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Ebbie Date: 09 May 10 - 02:39 PM Here is a picture (allegedly) of the bog raven, gnu: It Wasn't Linked- Found it in my Search Alaska has the Golden Eagle too. Lots of ravens. Lots of Black Fly. Hard to come up with something that Canada ha that is not also in Alaska. So far as I know, we don't have all four species of loon. Wouldn't bet on it, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: gnu Date: 09 May 10 - 01:24 PM Well now! The balsam fir... I was sure it was the Dogwood... I mean, I was POSITIVE about the heron and the dogwood. Guess I choked on both. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: gnu Date: 09 May 10 - 01:16 PM I ain't never see one them there Redpolls round here. The Great Blue Heron is the Official bird of New Brunswick. Hmmm... I had better check that out on accounta I can't remember where (or even if) I read that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: mousethief Date: 09 May 10 - 01:15 PM LH: Why not poll the birds themselves, and see which species wants Canada as their official nation? And ask the eagle to pick one of the 20-some nations that claims them as the national bird. That would free up countries for other worthy birds. Those eagles are so greedy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 May 10 - 01:13 PM The Raven occurs in all provinces and the NW Territories. "The Birds of Canada" by Godfrey. Redpolls breed in the northern parts of the provinces so are not well-known to 'southerners'. |

Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Beer Date: 09 May 10 - 09:22 AM Gnu, I stand corrected. I once read that Ravens did not come east of Ontario and I have been looking through my 12 bird books for the article and cannot find it. What I did find was that I was completely wrong. Now it is going to drive me nuts as to where I read this. Ad. |

Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Beer Date: 08 May 10 - 11:49 PM I spoke of the Loon earlier in this thread but forgot to mention that Canada is the only Country which has all four species. That to me would give good reason for it to be our "Bird". Or we could go with the Golden Eagle the largest of all raptures just to piss our America Eagle off. lol. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Beer Date: 08 May 10 - 11:43 PM I also like the raven idea except it is not represented across Canada. If I recall they are not located from Ontario on eastward. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: JohnInKansas Date: 08 May 10 - 11:31 PM Some people mistype "for" when they mean "as" ...(?) The beaver, suggested above, must be considered suspect, particularly since the discovery of what can only be a "training camp" of some sort where many advocates of "beavering" appear to have been gathering for several decades. No determination has been made (or at least none has been published) to suggest what illicit plan(s) may be hatching there, but the simple size and population of the encampment suggest that it must be a meeting - perhaps training - place for threatening and nefarious risks to us all. Disbelievers should check out Canada's eager beavers TOO DAMMED BIG to be innocent! John |

Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 08 May 10 - 10:24 PM Only one raven in Canada, Corvus corax principalis, the 'common' raven or Le Grand Corbeau. Holarctic (Both old and new worlds) The Birds of Canada, W. E. Godfrey, National Museum of Natural Sciences, National Museums of Canada. I had to look it up, since I wasn't sure there was only one. This large size book has excellent pictures, and good, detailed descriptions. Look for used copies. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: gnu Date: 08 May 10 - 08:19 PM What linked photo? |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Ebbie Date: 08 May 10 - 07:03 PM But according to the linked photo, gnu, it appears that it has red on its undersides? |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: gnu Date: 08 May 10 - 05:54 AM Ebbie... I am sure you have the raven I speak of. It's a common raven, but it's one that claims the best breeding grounds (remote wilderness), thereby being the largest and most intelligent. They are huge compared to most ravens seen by people travelling the roadways or even "backwoods" lumbering roads. Bog Raven is what my old man used to call them... just a plain old VERY large raven. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Genie Date: 08 May 10 - 01:47 AM I think you're right, Leeneia. Then again, it was the 3rd graders in Hawaii who chose the umuhumunukunukuapua'a as the state fish. *g* |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Ebbie Date: 07 May 10 - 09:36 PM Now that I've seen a photo of it, gnu, I would second the bog raven. So far as I know, Alaska doesn't have it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: gnu Date: 07 May 10 - 08:26 PM 999... The genus Crosby, species Sid The Kid, is a Penguin that is not very popular in Canada at the moment. See the NHL thread. Even The Cherry, touted above as a candidate by Little Hawk, has voiced his disdain for same due to recent events. Although it was definitely celebarted during the Limpics, it has fallen from it's lofty aerie with a resounding WTFITBS? I would support the raven as my second choice. But it would have to be a bog raven. Few city folk know much about the remote bog raven. Extremely intelligent and communal, the large bog raven fears not even the eagle. I have seen them put the boots to bald eagles. They fear not of any creature except, possibly, humans who destroy their habitat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 May 10 - 07:07 PM I think we should have the penguin as our national bird. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 07 May 10 - 06:37 PM Choosing a national bird (or flower, etc) is the kind of thing that should be left to the kids. That way, it seems that it matters how they feel, but no harm can be done. The national bird of Costa Rica, a land of rare and colorful birds, is the clay-colored robin, a dull-looking creature. But it's friendly, you'll see it around your neighborhood, and it sings a pretty song. I'm pretty sure it was the children's choice for the national bird. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: GUEST,Calico Date: 07 May 10 - 06:32 PM I voted for the pigeon. Somebody's gotta claim them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Inukshuk Date: 07 May 10 - 06:23 PM I'm all for the high-heeled wobbler or maybe the rose breasted wee tit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: mousethief Date: 07 May 10 - 06:07 PM I think Canada geese should be classified as an invasive species. They do untold damage to parks and lawns, and cost millions in cleanup. And people are worried about illegal aliens coming over our southern border! |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: GUEST,bankley Date: 07 May 10 - 06:00 PM that robin is pretty washed out looking... we used to have a pair of male robins on the back on the two dollar bill long before gay marriage was an issue... now it's a Toonie with a bear looking for more ice.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Emma B Date: 07 May 10 - 05:54 PM The Robin was 'crowned' the UK's national bird in 1960 As regards the Canada Goose ....... Give Canada the bird back would be a wish - they are now classified as a 'pest' in the UK for the reasons so delicately referred to above plus their total irresponsible lack of family planning :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: mousethief Date: 07 May 10 - 05:51 PM The Beaver is the mascot of Oregon State University. I wonder if, in keeping with U.S. college athletics tradition, their women's athletic teams are called the Lady Beavers? |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 May 10 - 05:46 PM The beavers played hell with trees on our North Saskatchewan River Lot (originally surveyed by HBC for Country and Metis, a quarter section with narrow frontage on the river but extending one mile back from it). The couple who bought it from us encouraged a trapper, but I was too soft-hearted. No- definitely not the beaver. The raven is the bird of the Crows Nest Pass, southern Alberta and British Columbia. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: mousethief Date: 07 May 10 - 05:19 PM Camp robbers are horrifically annoying. I've not yet met a camper or hiker who doesn't think they are a blight on the face of the forest. I can't imagine Canadians would want to be represented by them. |

Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Amergin Date: 07 May 10 - 05:12 PM Why does it have to be a bird? Couldn't it be a beaver? |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 May 10 - 05:07 PM One vote here for the raven. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Ebbie Date: 07 May 10 - 05:06 PM o Canada goose o loon o raven o whiskey jack o great blue heron o snowy owl o short-billed crow o snow goose o tundra swan And the article lists lots more birds that people have suggested: * red-tailed hawk, * blue jay * mallard duck * abundant grouse * puffins * ptarmigans * common pigeon * seagull * turkey vulture In Alaska we have 'em all so I vote for Canada Goose because we have those as well, but we always know whence it stems. As for its squirting habits, it is no different from any other creature. The bird is bigger so its splatches are also bigger. Who said, "Bleedin' obvious."? |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: Little Hawk Date: 07 May 10 - 04:54 PM Choosing the Loon, on the other hand, might cause people everywhere to think we're all a bit crazy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Give Canada the bird. From: gnu Date: 07 May 10 - 04:52 PM The Dionne Warbler? Surely you jest, sir. The bird beats it's wings against it's chest more often that a cock Ruffed Grouse with a... hmmm... nevermind. Yes, it has an amazing song voice but it's surlely not representative of the Canucks who think this particular bird should not migrate north again. Hopefully, those that are of this mind can be satisfied with "birdwatching" this particular species on TV. The Tufted Tit-Mouse? I prefer the Puffy variety. Such soft plummage and fairly rare. My first encounter with a bird was of the puffy variety. I have been a fan ever since. As for Sap Suckers... hmmm... nevermind. That would be a real cockup. |
