The power went off briefly last night, but I didn't worry about it, my alarm clock has a battery backup. Needs a new battery, I realized this AM when I woke up half an hour later than I should have. "It's all good," I thought, "I still have plenty of time to get ready and leave for work on time." Sure did, until the dog raced over to the neighbor's shed and got nailed in the face by a very annoyed skunk five minutes before I had to leave for work. Trying to keep stinky puppy outside (the apartment entry way reeks, becoause he managed to squirt past me at one point), I made it into the house and called work. No answer on the park phone, phone out of order in the manager's quarters, reduced to trying his cell phone (power is apparently out at work, too) to let him know I was going to be late and why. His wife answers, I tell her, she laughs the laugh that only a relieved pet owner can laugh (OMG! I'm so glad that wasn't my pet!) and says she'll tell my boss. Of course it's barely 7 AM and we have nothing in the house for deskunking the wretched dog. Kind neighbor gave us the dregs of his bottle of commercial shunk deodorizer, which helped a little. Meanwhile, stink-dog is shut in the bathroom, whimmpering and scratching at the door. I run to the grocery store (thank goodness it opens at 7 AM!) for the ingredients for a deskunking agent. J-boy has run across the street to the neighbors and borrowd a giant-size bottle of air deodorizer. I come back and the apartment smells like vanilla-scented skunk. I mix up the deskunker, suds up the dog, who is trying his best to escape from the shower stall. I let the deskunker do its thing, rinse him off, and lather him up again with some foofy dog shampoo I bought when he had really dry skin. I never used it, because when I got home, I discovered that it was passion-flower scented. Who the hell wants their dog to smell like passion flowers? Right now, me. It beats skunk, barely. So now the aprtment smells like a melange of vanilla, passionflower, skunk and wet dog. I give up. I'm going to work. J-boy can deal with the cleanup.

So sorry, Tami. Been there; done that.

At least it's warm enough to open windows and air the place out. Plus there is still a strong wind blowing through.

Seamus cooperated all through the de-skunking process then ran outside and rolled in the skunk smell - had to start all over again.

Passion Flower? Poor bandit. How embarrassing.

Actually, the more I think about it, the funnier the whole episode seems. And the look on Bandit's face...

Giving Bandit the sniff test just now, the stink is just on his face. He must have shoved his face in the hole under the shed right after Pepe came home from looking for love. No wonder the skunk was annoyed!

Aye, poor skunk, woken up before 7am after a night chasing the elusive ladies..

Commisserations, Tami, some get the stink, others get the noise. I had to send Milloup away on holidays two days ago, we have THREE bitches in high season in the near vicinity, and he was going out of his mind. Wouldn't eat, couldn't sleep, wandered around restlessly whinging all the time (driving ME nuts, too). Anytime I'd get up, he'd be right at my heels hoping for an outing to look for damsels in distress. Numerous times I had to go and stop him from howling and barking at the window when one of the desirables was outside. I felt like a bitch shouting 'shut up!' at frequent intervals..

Monday night, when I went dancing, I came home at 10.30pm and could hear him howling and barking in the flat as soon as I opened the door downstairs. I sincerely hope he hadn't been keeping the whole building entertained for the entire time I was out.

How do you communicate to a dachshund, that at 14˝ a bit of decorum wouldn't go amiss and that chasing ladies isn't good for him, anyway?

He'll be home on Sunday, I miss the auld beggar.

Bente

The poor skunk probably spent the night like the rest of us - water coming in and rising, wind howling. He may have had to abandon his comfy spot until it drained.

I am having trouble keeping from laughing out loud (not advisable in a cubicle in a room full of working editors). You have such a gift for storytelling, Tami my dear! You should write a book.

Ranger I am so glad it is you dealing with this...... I'm remembering the night Bubba tangled with a skunk and then shook all over the house spreading it everywhere.... We just got over a foot of very wet snow and the skunks are hiding like all wise ones.

I guess shoveling looks better than it did a few minutes ago.... but Passion flower???

The skunk was returning home, which is how he was spotted by Stinky - er, Bandit, in the first place. I think the skunk went to bed feeling smug: "Hah! Take that, stupid dog!"

As for whether Bandit learned anything from the experience, we'll have to wait and see. He is a very clever dog, but he does have a strong prey drive. His predecessor, Clancy, was sprayed once and avoided skunks forever more. Our terrier Donald took it personally and declared a lifelong vendetta against all skunks. Hopefully Bandit takes after Clancy, but I have a feeling it'll probably be Donald he'll be more like. Oh, well. Could be worse, could've been a porcupine he tangled with and instead of being merely stinky for a period of time, we'd have an enormous vet bill to deal with.

Well, off to take Stinky for a walk.

Sometimes I thank heavens we don't have skunks in the UK.... unless you watch any Disney film set in Britain that is....

Tomato juice doesn't work. The dogs smell like tomato juice when they have it on them, and they smell of that acrid smell of burned rubber skunk when you wash it off again. Ask me how I know.

There is a product by Nature's Miracle called Skunk Odor Remover. And it is best to have some handy because dogs always get skunked at night. Put it on before you even get the coat wet and let it start soaking in and working. There is also a mix of dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide that helps knock some of the smell off if you don't have the enzyme odor remover. It takes a lot of baths, and you need to let it stay on them for a few minutes if you can before you wash it off.

A couple of years ago in the fall I looked out the door at midnight as I was locking up and I saw my dejected looking pit bull curled up on the lawn and there was a black lump further down. And investigation revealed that my partners in crime both got skunked in the face. It took a couple of weeks before I finally got to where it was just a mild hint of skunk on the dogs. The fact that the pit bull stuck it out and killed the skunk meant she really got the worst of it, and I think it affected her sense of smell for several months. Her nose wasn't as good as the other dog, when she used to really be the one who rooted around sniffing things.

I can't believe you have a skunked dog in your apartment, but I suppose there weren't a lot of other choices. A friend at work had a dog get skunked and before she realized what had happened it raced through her house and under her bed, smearing the smell all over the underside of the box spring and one the carpet.

Good luck in getting it under control!

SRS

It must be the season for skunk migration. I passed two very fresh but dead specimens in the roadways yesterday morning on the way to school with my son. Even though you don't hit it and seem to be away from it, I suppose spray on the road gets on the tires. It takes forever to clear the smell even when you pass one.

I hope my two learned their lesson with the first one. It is such a struggle to get that smell off of everything.
