September 3,2009
We had the old girl for 17 years, getting her, as a tiny pup, in early September 1992. Quite a while for a Shepherd-Husky cross! She looked like a Grey Wolf.
She hunted with me and loved to go ice fishing, believing it was a sushi bar! She fiercely protected our home and the kids where as much hers as they were mine. Less than an hour after first being introduced to retrieving from the water she was flying off the end of the dock to get the frisbee.
We buried her in the back yard. Had a little ceremony. We all cried like babies.
She left us all with many many fond memories

Likewise. They make such wonderful companions. I was in the vet last night with my dog and somebody came in to have his own dog put down. 9 months old, and it had turned on the children several times. For safety's sake he left it outside with his wife until the vet was ready. Even then it was muzzled before it was brought in.

The whole thing was probably entirely necessary, and I would doubtless have done the same thing if I'd been in his situation. Yes, there are behaviour experts who might have been able to sort the poor animal's problems out. But who would take the risk when there are young children involved?

Yet I came away feeling like I'd watched a child being murdered.

Dogs in heaven?......There had better be!

If my old border collie isn't waiting at the gate, they can keep it.

He died twenty years ago aged 17. He was my kids most fathful nannie, and we never feared for them when he was around.

Not a pet, but a best friend, who never wore a leash in his life. My wife left him sitting outside Woolworths once, and came out of another door, forgot him, and came home. Two hours later she remembered, and raced back to find him patiaently still waiting.

My condolences to you all, and may the memories be as much comfort for you as they have for me.

Don T.

i am so sorry to hear this 3refs, i am crying for your loss, and wishing you and your family the very best in trying to remember all the quirky things she did, that made her, her.

kendal, i too think about when ours will be gone, but as much as it hurts to think of it now, i know it will truely break my heart.

personally, i don;t think there is a heaven as such, but i do think there is a massive folk festival somewhere until we are ready to come back again, i have no doubts that they are all playing chase round the tents and vans, and swimming in the nearby river, having a ball. they will always watch over the humans they loved as we will always remember them.

sorry i have to have a good cry right now.

take care all

lots of love

Love them every day you have them, so there are no regrets about not spending enough quality time or going for walks or whatever. It sounds like you can truly say that your dog led a well-lived life. That's what counts, a consolation as you adjust to her absence.

We lost a beloved cat earlier this year; she died of something we couldn't treat, and died way too young. We mourn for all of the lost purrs and cuddles we should have had with that silly cat.

As someone who lost my beloved pet and companion of 13 years five months ago, I know the grief you are experiencing. Pets have a very special place in our hearts. It's so hard when they go. I'm getting teary eyed as I type this. I sure hope that when I cross the bar, the first thing I hear is an excited "woof" of welcome.

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures. Lord we bring you our grief in the loss of beloved dog and ask for courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for her who lived among us and gave us freely of her love. We commit our friend and companion into your loving hands. Give us the eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and how every living thing speaks to us of your love - forever. Amen.

One of the beauties of Mudcat is being among fellow pet lovers. I think we've had s lot of pet obits run longer than some human ones......and justly so at times.

"The biggest problem with dogs is that they don't live long enough. They always seem to leave us when we're most vulnerable, most in need of their biased, affirming presence. Dogs make us believe we can actually be as they see us, and it's often only when they're gone that we realize their role in what we've become."

As someone has said, we don't get 'over' grief, we just get 'through' it. Time doesn't seem to affect the emotion itself; I still miss my old poodle and she's been gone 35 years.

The way I see it, if I choose to believe that pets survive somewhere, just waiting for us, that's my choice. The Rainbow Bridge is one way to visualize it.

If we survive death, I have no trouble believing that anything that is capable of loving also survives.

I, too, have been down that road more than one time. It is the saddest event I have had to endure in my life. It is just unfortunate that their life spans have to be so short in relation to our own, but that is made up for in the joy and love they give while they are with us.

I think of my Cats as little Blessings in life. They bring me peace, amuement and contentment. Their unique personalities are a continual delight to the soul. I love my little furry friends. They share your life without jugdment or complaint. Their affection, peculiar quirks and loyalty, are very real life Blessings. For what it 's worth, I have reason (personally) to believe, that pets also continue as afterlife companions and as such are worth being consciously remembered, so they know they are not forgotton, if the right time presents. I really do hope these new age style sentiments, are not 'offensive' at a time of sadness.

My sympathies 3refs ..... I share your grief .... 3 weeks today we had to put our Otis down .... (he had bone cancer) ... Ann and I were with him at the end .... we are still crying today .... he came to us when he wasn't quite 2 years old, from the Seabrook Race track in New Hmaphire ... he was in such bad shape, he never knew what a pat was ..... over the next 5 years he blosoomed into one of the most lovely, sincere, happy, gentle dogs I have ever known .... Ann and I were blessed to have him our lives .... he died a stoic gentleman.

A big hug of condolence to ya 3Refs.

'If they don't like dogs, there's probably other things wrong with them as well', quote from Danish author Lise Nørgaard, a wise old lady.

I feel sorry for your loss, 3refs, losing a dog leaves a very big void in your everyday life, and one that it's not easy to fill (not to say impossible).

My dachshund will be 14 in a couple of weeks. I *know* he's lived by far the largest part of his life by now, and still it feels like only yesterday that I brought 3 kilos of dachshund puppy home. Where on earth did the time go?

Ain't that the truth. Tamar would NOT eat peas. I once counted seven 'cooked from frozen' peas and added them to some stew I'd cooked. She ate the whole dish. I entered the room as she was spitting out the last pea. There they were in the bowl. ALL seven. She wasn't 'just a dog'.

I believe that all living things return to the source from which we came.

Our dog, Seamus, has lived a life of luxury and has never been kicked or hit. All dogs should be so lucky.

Yeah. I took Tamar because she had been beaten, kicked. She'd suffered a broken tail AND a broken ear. Took me a few years to get her over that stuff. She became a very gentle 'good with children' dog. Only ever saw her bare her canines a few times, and the three occasions I recall were when either kids or other people were threatened by loud voices or menacing movements.

Sorry 3refs. Man, I could talk about that dog for hours, but I really don't want to side-track your thread. Was just trying to let you know that your dog WILL be with you for the rest of your life. That's the way they give back the love you gave them.
