Tonen Chemical Corp., a chemical division of Exxon, is mass producing a membrane for lithium ion batteries that provides better separation of anode from cathode, making these batteries safer and quicker-charging. It is preparing to mass-market these batteries.

In its first venture into all-electric cars, with Electrovaya and the Maryland Science Center, the first of these, the 0-emission Maya 300, will be introduced in Baltimore. A prototype can be driven at the Center starting this week, a free test drive. In August, a rental program will be initiated.
The Maya 300 only has a range of 60 miles before charging is necessary, but other models are planned which will increase the range to a few hundred miles.
A version with a 120 mile battery will sell for $35,000.
Cost is a problem with current all-electric cars; mass production is required before prices go down.

Exxon electric car

Large investors in Exxon-Mobil, especially the Rockefeller family and large British investors, are urging diversification on Exxon-Mobil, but petroleum will continue to be the main source of income for the next 30-50 years, say business analysts.

Well, there will be no oil to spill if their little cars manage to run aground!!! I do suspect that is good news for the shore birds...

And good news for the plants producing electricity (mostly coal-fired).

Seriously, alternatives to petroleum-powered cars are a long way in the future.

Here (Calgary in western Canada), many people have vacation sites, or drive long distances on weekends to camp and fish, visit relatives, haul kids and hockey gear, etc., and these tiny cars are not an option.
The special deals on vehicles as a result of the downturn has resulted in many more new SUVs, vans and pick-up trucks on the road.
In the city itself, 30 miles from top to bottom and excluding suburbs, driving 60 miles in a day is not uncommon.
