Catherine- Thank you for posting here at Mudcat. I'm grateful you've been able to read our words honoring Kaelan and all of the dear family members. There are many people around the world who think of you all more often than you can know.
Kaelan's legacy lives on in the people who loved him, as does Sandy's.

Blessings and music to you all.

Maeve, in Maine

JOY BE WITH US   James Stephens

Joy be with us and honour close the tale;
Now do we dip the prow, and shake the sail,
And take the wind, and bid adieu to rest.

With glad endeavour we begin the quest
That destiny commands, though where we go,
Or guided by what star, no man doth know.

Uncharted is our course, our hearts untried,
And we may weary e'er we take the tide,
Or make fair haven from the moaning sea.

Be ye propitious, winds of destiny
On us at first blow not too boisterous bold;
All Ireland hath is packed into this hold,
Her hope flies at the peak. Now it is dawn,
And we away. Be with us Mananaun.

Only viewing this as we come up to the 3rd year since Kaelan's passing, since I am not as versed in what's accessible to everyone on the web. Many thanks to all who have shown support for our families over the past few years, with both Kaelan and Sandy having journeyed beyond the earth plane. I hope to find ways capture the story with the inspiration from many of the moving tributes and sharings we have been blessed with to help us cope and bring others hope as well when facing many kinds of struggles. Feel free to contact me on Facebook and may the spring of 2012 be one our country and world finds inspiring even in the face of many challenges. peace and love to all...Catherine and family

My son Aaron just told me today about your family losing David's son Kaelan. It has been many years since I have seen all of you. My remembrances of the Paton's are of a close-knit and loving family. From what I have read about Kaelan, it seems that he made a positive impression on all that knew him, he was brave, loyal and loving as well. Such a tremendous loss for you and all who knew him. How fortunate for the world to have had him in it. I wish your entire family peace.

Sadness flies on the wings of the morning, and out of the heart of darkness comes the light.

I am so sorry for you and all who grieve. I've been out of the loop for a while and it wasn't utill Susan brought this to my attention that I learned of the trajedy. My heart goes out to you. That Kaelan was attempting to save another's life tells me volumes about him and the family he represents: true-hearted and brave. God's peace, love, blessings and assurances to you all. This young man, a hero in every sense of the word.

The incredible gathering in the packed auditorium said it all. So many, young and old, all there for Kaelan and his family. The service was very moving, Caroline sang as beautifully as she has ever sung, David was magnificent, and Sandy hung in there, God bless him. A letter from Frankies grandmother was read, she must be a remarkable woman. Sisters, Aunts and Uncles were there and so many old friends, Ed Trickett came in from Chicago, it was great to see him, he sang "Gently down the stream of time".
I told my neighbor about Kaelan, he told me of something from the Talmud, not quite sure what the Talmud is, but it says, "He who saves one life, saves the world".
Hope the service helped and brought some peace to the family and friends of Kaelan.

Today my wife Ruth and I are swinging into what passes for a normal day around here. But, it's not just another day. Yesterday we drov e up to Sharon for Kealan's memorial service. Over the years, I've become somewhat of an unintended funeral attender. I sing with the Men's Chorus in my church and as often as possible, I go to funerals at our church and sing with the choir. When my gospel quartet was still active, we often sang a home-going ceremonies, Christian and even Jewish. My two son-in-laws are Muslim and we've attended their funeral services as well. All that said, I thought the memorial service for Kaelan was the most beautiful I've ever attended. Even though the service was held in a school auditorium and many of the people in attendance aren't church-goers, we had church yesterday. At least my definition of church. There was great crying at times and great joy, as well. When a wonderful black woman sang I'll Fly Away and people locked arms and swayed to the music as they sang along, it felt like they could leviate the building. The testimonies were extremely moving, and filled with warm humor. Caroline sang a musical setting for the familiar reading that St. Paul wrote in 1st Corinthinas, her voice quavering with emotion, but strong, and the whole service was moving blend of testimony, poetry and song. Letters were read from Sandy to his grandson, and David to his son, as well as from several other family members.

After the service, we gathered in the cafeteria for a vegetarian buffet with a dangerous, long, long table of deserts. It was a time for me to see many friends I've not seen for years including Ed Trickett, Sally Rogers, Dalas Cline, Bill and Andy Spence, George Ward, Patricia Campbell, Karen Kobela, Priscilla Herdman and countless others.

We must be getting old. We get together at funerals.

Sunday was a beautiful bookend to a very spiritual weekend.

Jerry

I'm posting this message on the Kitchen Table thread too for those who might miss it here.

Dear Patons. Janet and I were out of the country and I only learned of your loss a few days ago. I am heart-scalded, as I know of no family who more loves rivers. I recall a conversation with Sandy--I think it was at a Folk Next Door Concert--about our mutual love for songs about rivers and for the peace one gains from watching them run. David's love of paddling and your clan's respect for the beautiful waterways of this land make this tragedy all the more searing. As the father of a firefighter/legislator/whitewater guide, my respect for what Kaelan did to save others knows no bounds. There is no greater love nor courage than to imperil your own life to save and serve others. I regret that I cannot attend the memorial, but my grateful heart will be there. May songs and friends give you strength.

Correction to bbc's post above:
The tax deductible fund being set up by the Paton's local bank in Kaelan's name is to be an education trust fund for Kaelan's two younger sisters, Shannon, 13 and Juliana, 10. Kaelan's dad David and sister Linnea will agree together on how and when any funds are used. The fund will not be used for family living expenses.

The family notes that anyone who can join them July 12th for Kaelan's memorial celebration is very welcome.

Yes, Susan. A memorial, open to all, is planned for Sunday, July 12th at Housatonic Valley Regional High School

We saw David today for the first time since Kaelan's death. Naturally, he & his folks are still actively grieving. It was good to be with them. A non-profit fund has been established to help with the family's expenses at this time (Simple cremation costs more than $2,000). If you wish to contribute, checks can be made out to "Kaelan Paton Memorial Fund" & can be mailed "Care of" Sandy & Caroline Paton, Folk-Legacy Records, Box 1148, Sharon, CT 06069. Buying music from Folk Legacy, either online or at the Old Songs Festival, will also help out.

Sandy, Caroline, and family: I am so sorry that this happened. I know that there's nothing we can really say to alleviate the grief but, as someone so aptly put it, words are all we have. Love and prayers are in my heart for you.

I cannot even imagine the pain and the sadness. My heart goes out to this family and I have tears in my eyes for family and this young man though I've never met any of them.
