What is your recent most favorite movie quote?

How about "Shut up and eat your garbage" from Ratatouille?

Well Bert, as I haven't been to a movie for over 20 years, can't do recent, but one of my all time favourites is from The Goodbye Girl.
She says to him, words to the effect of 'Will you be coming back?', and he says.
'Of course I'm coming back, I left my guitar'

May not have the words right, but it always appealed to me as being the sort of thing any self respecting guitarist should say.

New movies? That will be tough. I don't get out to movies like I used to - havinf a 7 year old does that to you. And of the movies I have seen there weren't any memorable lines. Now old movies - that's a different story.

"Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By'." Lauren Bacall, as (whatever her name was) in Casablanca.

And before anyone hops on my case about that, she never said, "Play it again, Sam."

"You think I'm funny? I'm amusing to you?" ~ Goodfellas (Joe Pesci's character)

I'd like to explain the searing impact of that sentence, but somebody just might watch the film, so I'll leave it alone.

That wasn't Lauren Bacall, Uncle Dave-O! Lauren had some killer lines in other Bogart films, but she was not in Casablanca.

My favorite was her instructions on how to whistle. Seems to me that was in Key Largo, wasn't it?

Speaking of favorite movies, though, I can't think of anything I like better than Ratatouille. That movie is just about perfect.

"(Whatever her name was) in Casablanca": Ilsa

Played by: Ingrid Bergmann

Too bad you were wrong about that part, Dave-O. The part you got right (that no one every said "Play it again, Sam" in that script) is a great bit of trivia that refutes a widely-held misconception.

actually, it was To Have and Have Not:

"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow."

Thanks, LEJ. ;-)

Regarding Winona...well, she's just a different type altogether from Lauren Bacall, I think. Not that she can't be vampy when she wants to...she can...but it's not the number one source of her appeal. The actress I've seen in modern times who came closest to recreating the Lauren Bacall persona and updating it into a more sexually explicit era in movies was Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat"...a marvelous examle of film noire! I thoroughly enjoy watching movies about such women, but I'm not much attracted to them in real life. I find them too aggressive. They're "bad" girls, in a sense. I'm much more attracted to quieter, more complex types like Winona, because she's rather subtle and mysterious at the same time, which makes me want to know more about her. (I'm going, of course, on her movie roles when I say that...)

Dealing with Lauren Bacall or Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat" is more like taking a dare from someone, and that's not the type of thing I tend to go for. It's fun to watch onscreen, but not my cup of tea.

Lonesome EJ, I remember the "My Favorite Year" quote slightly differently. A lady in the restroom says something like "Mr. Swann, this is for ladies only!" To which Swann replies something like "So is this, madam, but every now and then I am obliged to take it out and run some water through it."

I tried doing a web search to get the exact quote, but I came up with several different answers, none of which sounded right.

See, Cluin, here's the key for me in attraction. What is someone really after in terms of sex/relationship/love/whatever you call it?

Are they dealing in...

1. A search merely for fun?
2. A way to exercise their power (plus have some fun on the side)?
3. A search for intimacy and affection?

To search merely for fun is quite common, and I find no objection to that really. It's kind of innocent and a lot of people do it. Okay. But I take romantic involvement too seriously myself to just search for fun.

The search for power is a different thing altogether, and to me it's ultimately a dangerous and ugly thing. People have no business exercising that kind of power over each other. Now to me the classic vamp (or the classic male casanova/seducer) is primarily a person searching for power. They're using their sexuality to hold sway over another person and enjoy the thrill of their own power. The other person is merely an accessory to the act, and accessories can be easily replaced. I don't care for that approach at all, and I instinctively attempt to avoid it.

What attracts me is the genuine search for shared intimacy and affection, for mutual understanding.

Now many people, truth be told, are somewhat a mixture of those three qualities or modes of behaviour, but the aggressive vamp primarily works through the mode of exercising seductive power and achieving conquest. This makes for great entertainment in a movie, but in real life I would tend to avoid such people like the plague, because they are dangerous on a personal/emotional level, and they don't really give a damn, because they're strictly in it for themselves.

This is fully demonstrated in the plot of the excellent movie "Body Heat". The woman in the movie is undoubtedly very attractive, but she's also like a Black Widow spider. She's strictly in it for herself.

That's a pretty complicated sets of goals and strictures, Hawk.

Don't you ever want a bit of meaningless mad animal FUN? Especially within a longterm relationship? Sometimes you're both in it for what you can each get. Then come back to that sensitive caring stuff.

Variety is the spice, as they say. And sex is about being insane and even dangerous for a little while.

There actually have been some good quotes in recent movies for kids--(but the writers have learned it's good to try to appeal to adults too, fortunately).

From "Over the Hedge" (I'm pretty sure)--at the end of the film when the battleax who's been trying--unsuccessfully, of course--to keep raccoons, squirrrels and the other characters out of her pristine development--is standing there, having had something blow up in her face--can't remember what--and also is being arrested for something.

Anyway she's standing there with her hair singed, and she's being arrested--and she screams:   "BUT I'M THE PRESIDENT OF A HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION!!!!"

The other one I really like is from "Ice Age": some line of animals, can't remember what kind, is marching along to this cadence:
"I don't know, but I been told
Uh, 2,3,4.
End of the world is mighty cold"

Cluin, you asked: "Don't you ever want a bit of meaningless mad animal FUN? Especially within a longterm relationship? Sometimes you're both in it for what you can each get. Then come back to that sensitive caring stuff."

Do I want some meaningless mad animal fun within a caring relationship? Yeah! Definitely. I just don't seem to want it in the absence of a caring relationship, that's all. And I don't like sex being used as a power game. It's not about power for me, it's about intimacy. It's an extremely intimate form of friendship, and your friends are people you should be able to trust.

Maybe in my next lifetime I'll be a bit less idealistic about it, but that's how it stands for this one.

A Robert Ryan quote that cracked me up. From what I remember, a little kid came over to him, and Ryan looked at him and said, "Beat it, dust!" My friends and I used that quote for years, but I can't find the movie it was in. I thought that it might be in Odds Against Tomorrow or Bad Day At Black Rock, two of my favorite movies of his, but it isn't.

Ah well...

Two, I love, and use. From a 1937 Frank Capra movie, there are a lot of people moving past each other in a room, hurriedly, as there is commotion going on as the room fills. One bit character calls out to another, in passing and says vibrantly, "HI!" To which another guy in the crowd replies, "No, just thinking!"

Another, from a 'Three Stooges' short, Curly, who says these little one liners, sorta under his breath, quips "If at first you don't suc-ceed, suck harder!"

From "Bittersuite:Joy".."Love, and it will create your circumstances"
From same movie, "Down deep, all men are shallow", to which the lead male answers, "Yes, and down deep all women are inside out"

From "Lawrence of Arabia" Faisal, played by Alec Guinness, says to another sheik, he is debating, when they finally convene to form a government, "God is good, when he gave you the way to think like an ass, he gave you a face to match"

Okay, enough for now..hope you can use them!
got a lot more, too....

I believe the proper text is: "We don't got to show you no steenking badges." That's closer anyway. I like it better.
