So, it's that time of year again... who's going? Fave acts etc?

One not to miss:

Sun 21st - LUNCH TIME gig at KORKS WINE BAR with VIN GARBUTT, featuring beautiful support from Festival Favourites FELDSPAR (myspace.com/thefeldspar) , the mighty GERRY McNIECE , and much much more... all from 12pm.

Can't wait to see vin again...

Apart from my title Q, as we've not been before, are there many sessions on there?

I've checked out here:http://otleyfolkfestival.com/ & also their Myspace page - but there's no mention of sinarounds, sesshes etc

Anyone know?

Sessions in many pubs around town pretty much all the time, I went a good few years back. I think they're spontaneous but not sure. Do remember some timetabled ones though... always opportunities to play though, a good little fest.

Lots of pubs Mr Happy although they can get very crowded with frequently two sessions in different parts.

My own favourite is The Manor House which (last year) had a good covered area at the back for unreformed smokers.

If you don't want to make your own entertainment be sure not to miss Ruth Notman one of the newest talented young performers on the UK folk scene.

If you are in Otley but unable to attend the festival itself, if you call in the Rose and Crown between around 3pm and 6pm there will be some music from a Trio of local musicians the members of which have been around the scene since the sixties.

Korks Saturday afternoon - with Modern Eulogy, Waterland, Sketch - that's Maggie Boyle, Gary Boyle and Dave Bowie (who may join me for a couple) - and Ruth Notman to finish, then Sat evening in the Conservative Club; a songwriter's special with Joseph Porter, Duncan McFarlane, Alistair Hulett and Gerry McNeice. Hope to see you there, Tom

Sessions are most likely going to be at the Manor, the Swan and the Cross Pipes.

All 3 pubs have outside areas and plenty of room.

The Red Lion (where there were also sessions) has closed.

There are some 'official' sessions planned - I know of a Bluegrass session that is in the Cross Pipes on Saturday afternoon from around 4pm. I know the people leading it - it will probably be more appalachian / american style music rather than strictly bluegrass.
The Cross Pipes also has a late licence on Saturday.

Hope to be there on Sunday - unfortunately it is the same weekend as Saltaire Festival so I try to do a day at each - sorry we will miss you this time, Tom - hope the CD is progressing well.

Will try to see CBS if we can get a ticket for the afternoon concert when we arrive. Otherwise we will be in the pubs. Shame about the Red Lion closing. We are losing too many proper pubs.

CD gong well, thanks Joe. Just back from Otley, as it happens - collecting the penultimate mix.

Deirdre - the songwriters thing is a kind of meet and chat/compare/collaborate. Should be very interesting indeed. I'l bring my Alderney flag.

I'll try to make a session or two in between as well - probably at one of the pubs named after a coloured animal

Planning to make it to Otley for a couple of visits at least this year, always one of me favourit festivals.
But wot's this about the Red Lion being closed then? Was hoping to go see Duncan the Mc there on Sat... Does anyone know, has an alternative venue been sorted? (Can't access the festival website today, seeme to be a problem with it...)

The website says:
"One of our regular venues, the Red Lion on Kirkgate has unfortunately closed at short notice. Concerts and events scheduled to take place there will be resited to the Whittaker's beer garden, or the Civic Centre Room 4. Details will be posted in the Festival Office"

So alternatives have been arranged...

Barnsley Folk Club's house band, String Theory, are leading a couple of sessions in the Cross Pipes and The Yeoman. The programme, reasonably priced at £2.50, has all the details.

I'm not much of a flag flyer meself but I am really looking forward to the songwriters night.

See y'all there.

Snozz is absolutely correct with...
"One of our regular venues, the Red Lion on Kirkgate has unfortunately closed at short notice.
Concerts and events scheduled to take place there will be resited to the Whittaker's beer garden, or the Civic Centre Room 4.
Details will be posted in the Festival Office"

I have recieved notification that the Sat eve 'Traditional' concert that my DMcF acoustic band are scheduled for
(along with Robin Garside & others) has been moved from the (sadly closed) Red Lion to the Civic Centre Room 4.
See you there for a reet good sing, Moorley Man.
All the best - Duncan

Anyone know where the campsite is this year ( to the west or to the east of town?) Last year it was moved to a new location but I can't find owt about camping on the website.
Also - is camping still available seperately (i.e to non season ticket holders) and do you have to get tickets for camping from the festival office before heading for the campsite??
Many thanks

I spent all day there on Saturday, really enjoyed all the dance teams, went to a small session in the side room of the Manor house and then the celdhi on the night time. Liked the Simon Care band wasn't too sure about Toothless Maggie though. Too loud for my own personal taste, that said there was no shortage of people getting up and dancing to them

There were a lot of people in Otley yesterday and parking was not easy. I spent yesterday afternoon sitting in the sunshine in the garden of the Rose and Crown, chatting to friends and listening to the music drifting out. The trio playing (Tony Martin, Roger Knowles and Tony Aked) were excellent :-)

It was an excellent festival this year. The quality of performers and performances was excellent. Highlights for me were...

Chumbawamba
Kerfuffle
Coope, Boyes and Simpson
Steve Turner
The Duncan McFarlane Band (I'm not biased, honest)
Ruth Notman
The songs and songwriters night, particularly the powerful and captivating performances from Jospeh Porter)
Tom Bliss (sorry I didn't catch your show Tom. A big thanks for taking me double bass home, I am indebted to you sir!)

There were many other great performances too numerous to mention.

except bands on stage

Isn't that kinda what it's all about? That's what the ticket holders pay for I believe.

re sessions. The Cross Pipes is firmly back on the festival circuit (this was well documented in the programme) and had some fantastic sessions both inside and in the beer garden. The Yeoman also had sessions running. The loss of the Red Lion was a bit of a blow as we lost not only a great acoustic venue but a great session pub. Let's hope the powers that be at Enterprise Inns (Property Developers) Ltd. have the sense to put a new landlord in there soon.

The rescheduled acoustic concerts were a success with the Whitakers beer garden being a great venue. Of course, as always, we had the weather on our side.

Can't wait for next year's festival.

Big up to everyone involved.

Gerry :-)

Yes you are right Gerry, but, a lot of people go to sing and play in sessions, and these were very thin on the ground on Saturday afternoon, the trouble with Otley is [ and I love this little market town ] it is short of venues, pubs are the natural place for sessions but when there is a band on a session would clash, in previous years I can remember sessions in [ almost ] every pub in the town.

Loved Coope, Boyes and Simpson (as usual)

Also enjoyed - hearing for the first time -

Fyrish

One of the personal 'highlights'.... finding a hard back copy of James Ritchie's The Singing Street in the Oxfam book shop.

See you all next year

well, I have to say I didn't want for anywhere to have a session all weekend - early evening Friday in the Manor, then a late night session after the open Mic in the Cross Pipes, then the Yeoman on Saturday Afternoon. The Yeoman is a lovely big pub and I reckon you could have got at least one other session going there at the same time (anyone been to the Nook during Holmfirth? you get about 4 sessions at once in if you include the beer garden), then over to the Cross Pipes after some fish and chips - we meant to catch the appalachian session (outside), but just started another in the bar instead, then back to the Cross Pipes for Sunday afternoon.

OK I admit, I was involved in 'running' a couple of official sessions, but in the past we've played and sung in sessions *outside* the White Swan and the Black Bull, a little room in the woolpack, and even on the benches outside the Bay Horse. Where there's a will......

musical highlight for me was on sunday morning - hearing some scottish fiddle music drifting across the campsite and then realising it was FYRISH practicing!
