It is one of those days. Put my instant oatmeal in a cup with water, set the microwave and came back to find it erupting and pouring great rivers of sticky grey lava all over the company kitchen.

It's going to be a great day.

If God had intended us to eat oatmeal, He'd have made us all Scottish.

Bacon and eggs is the proper breakfast!

Now ask me how many times I've been spattered with hot grease....

Microwave oatmeal = wallpaper paste

It only takes about 10 minutes to cook it up properly at home BEFORE you go to work! You'll do your body a world of good if you take those few minutes. :)

(I say this while remembering my mother speaking of the really old fashioned oatmeal that wasn't "rolled" and had to sit overnight, simmering in a pan on the back of the old wood stove.)

Bring to the boil the night before, then turn it off. (This last bit is quite important, and is likely to get overlooked by people who can remember the Kingston Trio). Then warm it up in the morning, and bob's your uncle. What is a microwave, by the way? I haven't got one.

My grandfather ate a huge soup bowl of porridge every morning, along with two poached eggs, sausage, ham or bacon, another soup bowl of soaked home made bread toast with butter and sugar, one or two pieces of my grandmother's lard-pastry apple pie, and vast quantities of tea.

Mind, he died of heart failure at sixty-six.

SINSULL, here is a cool way I've discovered to make oatmeal...and it doesn't get all sticky and yukky, nor does it boil over.

I pour a serving of oatmeal in a bowl just before going to bed at night. On top of that oatmeal I pour rice milk (which I greatly prefer to cow's milk)...until the bowl is full. The bowl of oatmeal stands there overnight and the rice milk soaks into the oatmeal and softens it.

In the morning I get up, brush my teeth and wash up, then I get the bowl of oatmeal, put some honey on top, stir it in, and it's ready to eat.

It's room temperature, totally "cooked" (so to speak), but it has a different consistency from oatmeal that has been boiled, because it doesn't turn all slippery and slimy like the cooked oatmeal does. It's far more palatable, tastes wonderful, and presents absolutely no problem in cleanup of the utensils afterward. No slimy gunk to clean out of the pot. No trouble whatsoever.

I highly recommend this method. If you want your oatmeal hot, though, well, then I guess you could still do this method of mine and just put it in the microwave for a minute.

Keep in mind that food that is not subjected to high temperatures is far higher in vitamins and other good stuff, because high temperatures destroy much (if not most) of the nutritional value in food.

"Microwave oatmeal = wallpaper paste

I beg to differ!

In a large, high-sided ceramic bowl (I bought mine from Woolworths) put 1/2 cup of porridge oats, 1 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of water. Stir and microwave, at full power, for 4 MINUTES.

Compared to that it is porridge made in a pan on the stove which tastes like wallpaper paste!

Overcooked oatmeal is AWFUL! Yes, it does taste like wallpaper paste.

If you want no gluey residue in your oatmeal at all, then don't cook it, soak it. An hour of soaking in milk or rice milk or soya milk is enough to do the trick.

How do you know it tastes of wallpaper paste? That stuff is full of anti fungicides you know....

I've eaten some strange things in my lifetime, but I've never been the slightest bit interested in eating wallpaper paste.

Library paste, now that's completely different... much better texture and nutty in flavour.

I love Instant Oatmeal cooked with water and a touch of salt. Not slimy at all. Kendall makes great cooked oats . I haven't the patience.

I love Instant Grits too with a touch of salt and pepper and a bit of butter.

So, SINS, would you like us to give you Oatmeal cooking lessons at the next Getaway. If you're using instant oatmeal, heat the water to boiling, and THEN add the oatmeal.

Regular oatmeal is much cheaper, and you can microwave it just the way you tried to cook the instant stuff - just use a large bowl and cover it.

My Polish wife cannot bring herself to use a plate or bowsl that is larger then the food she's eating. She has been brought up to believe that using a large plate is wasteful. Therefore, she tends to spill stuff a lot. Are you Polish?

When I was little, I didn't want to eat my oatmeal, so my mother devised a novel way to get me to eat it. She put chocolate chips in it.

I'm not sure it made me a great fan of oatmeal, but I still do love chocolate.

If you mix water and flour, you get glue.

If you mix water and flour with eggs and sugar, you get cake.

Where did the glue go?

Soaking the oatmeal overnight in apple juice would be great! And you could add some raisins or dried fruit chunks. Man, I gotta try that.

I recall trying out the library paste too when I was a kid. Not bad if taken in small quantities.

No wonder you all ate library paste as children! Out of curiousity, I looked up the ingredients from several sources, which are, with minor deviations, as follows:

1 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. alum
4 c. water
Oil of cloves or wintergreen or peppermint

It's pretty much half sugar.

Now, what was that about oxymorons and the law of torts?

The library paste recipe above is very similar to the stuff we made in Oz when I were a lad, but schools often bought a commercially-made version (in conical bottles with a stick-brush-cap combo) known as "Clag". It entered the idiom when, if you were all bunged up, you'd describe yourself as "all clagged up!"

You can't put the "only takes 10 minutes" quote that close to the "microwave oatmeal" quote without people thinking I would cook oatmeal in a microwave for ANY amount of time, let alone 10 minutes. I was citing stovetop time for "old fashioned" oats cooked in a pan with a cover on it. Using water and a little salt. (I also like raisins in my oatmeal, but the kids won't eat them, so I don't fix it that way very often). Serve with brown sugar and soy milk.

The very first day I worked in a daycare with four year olds, I set up a pasting project using the non-toxic white glue the centre provided. After a bit, a cheerful small boy came and sat beside me and 'chatted me up' for a few minutes. Then, looking at me with a big grin, he dunked his half-inch brush in the glue container, extracted an enormous gob... and stuck it in his mouth and swallowed it.

I've seldom been so shocked in my life. My expression must have been pricelessly funny, because the little demon burst into peals of laughter, and didn't stop chuckling all the way to the bathroom to get his mouth washed out.

LOL...fun stories!

LH, I love rice milk; it's the only kind of milk I use. Since I am watching my carbs, I don't think I'll try your recipe, but it sounds good.

I put water on to boil, add brown sugar, stir it in 'til it dissolves, then pour in the oats. I cheat and get the one minute ones. By the time I've stirred them in they are almost done. I then put them in a ceramic bowl in which I have placed a very small amount of butter. Oatmeal melts it, I stir and eat. Yummy!!

Yeah, that type of oatmeal cooks very fast. Your method sounds like a good one, Kat, rather similar to what I used to do before I got into the soaking routine instead.

I find rice milk totally delicious, and it's healthful too, but I really can't stand cow's milk. Nothing in nature consumes cow's milk except baby cows. That should tell people something.

I love oatmeal & I've had it explode once - the only time I've ever cooked it in a microwave. Normally I cook it with water & serve it with buttermilk & bananas, no sugar cos bananas are sweet enough. But dates sound wonderful - I love dates ...

We were camping & I was in a line of folks holding cereal bowls of water & oats. I'd never used a microwave, & when it was my turn I was told the amount of time needed to cook it (seconds) so set the timer, waited, opened door & faced the overflowing bowl.

Oops, said my friend, I forgot to say open half way thru & stir.

Then I cleaned up while the queue of folks holding their bowls waited, dunno why I didn't ask him to clean up the mess.

Next day I didn't have oatmeal.

Ah! You keep the most important info secret!

The mug has a reduced surface area, which is likely to promote the explosive effect...

Try getting a 'soup mug' - a shallower wider open top than a mug, more like a soup bowl with a handle...
