I'm a beginner at guitar, and I'd very much like to play a few of the talking blues songs that I heard as a kid/teen. There are several of them, and maybe I'll put together my own.

I know the basic chord sequence is usually G, C, D or D7. I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out the bass note melody & strum pattern that go with a talking blues. Forgetting about the fancy stuff Phil Ochs or Dave Van Ronk used to do for intros and fills, does anyone have a basic tab of a simple talking blues?

I'd appreciate it much if you'd post it in reply or email me: etan.benami@gmail.com. Thanks much.

Etan,
I don't how to write tablature on the computer, but I can spell it out for you. Talking Blues pattern is the first thing I used to teach my guitar students many moons ago, once they had learned some chords.
This Talking Blues uses G, C and D (or D7, your choice):
    Begin in G chord pattern.
With a down stroke play your bass string (6th string) and the rest of the chord.
Then, with another down stroke play your 5th string and the rest of the chord.
    NOW, make C chord.
With a down stroke play your 5th string and the rest of the C chord.
Then, with a down stroke play your your 4th string and rest of the C chord.
    NOW, make a D chord (or D7).
With a down stroke play your 4th strng and the rest of the the D chord.
Then play your 5th string and rest of the chord.
NOW, forget the chord, left your fingers and play your 4th string open.
Play your 5th string on the third fret.
Play your 5th string on the second fret.
    Play your 5th string open.
MAKE a G chord and play your bass string (6th string, third fret.)
    REPEAT the whole thing.
When you're comfortable doing that, PM me or post another message
on this thread (I'm bookmarking it) and I can teach you the other part.
Good luck. This is how I learned to play.
Marty

That should be LIFT your fingers, not LEFT your fingers.

Try this Etan Ben-Ami. I've included some variations at the bottom.
