Ray, I see what you mean, he did look very normal for a jazz drummer.
Apparently once collaborated with another of my favourite men, Benny Green, on a song writing project, and, asked to suggest a joint working name, came up with Gan-green!

Alan was a regular at the Sunday sessions at Jagz in Ascot, backing everyone in sight. I remember him from Dankworth days. Sad news.

Sad news - always looked more like a woodwork teacher than a drummer - and a talented composer/arranger too.

Joined the great Jazz Band in the sky last week.
The real UK king of drums, able to play in any company from Dankworth, Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes to Dixieland. Played on the Stephan Grapelli/ Menuhin sessions.
