Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Nov 07 - 07:03 AM Danny Farrell was written by Pete St John, the man who wrote the bloody awful Fields of Athenry. I sing Danny Farrel, and will try to write out the words, but I'm not sure of some of the spellings Giok |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: Emma B Date: 17 Nov 07 - 02:29 PM That's not quite the same version Jim but one "adapted" by the Dubliners. Personally I prefer it as written by Pete St John as I linked to! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: theballadeer Date: 17 Nov 07 - 07:59 PM To Emma, Not sure which version you are talking about - but Ronnie Drew's version on his solo album, as well as the version he'd recorded with the Dubliners about a year later are the exact lyrics as your link... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: Dave Hanson Date: 18 Nov 07 - 03:13 AM The Dubliners firstly recorded it on an LP called ' Together Again ' produced by guess who ? Pete St John. eric |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Nov 07 - 05:25 AM It's the same words as I learned, from the singing of Ronnie Drew too. G |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: Emma B Date: 18 Nov 07 - 06:38 AM Unfortunately it's not the same words attributed to The Dubliners as given in the D.T. database! I suspect, in fact, that this is probably due to someone mishearing or failing to understand some of the "cultural context" of the song while listening to a recording but I felt it was better to give the song as written rather than simply refer the person who requested the lyrics to the version given in the D.T. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DANNY FARRELL..? BY Barney Rush..? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 18 Nov 07 - 06:49 AM I think Emma's right. Some of the song's words are in Irish, which it's easy to mishear/spell; and around here at least it IS sung as "people police hater" (one of the few weak lines in this song IMHO); and the "worriers" is actually a reference to Wellington boots. Etc. |

Subject: DT Corr: DANNY FARRELL (Pete St. John) From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Aug 09 - 08:29 PM The Digital Tradition has some serious Mondegreens. Here's what I found in the songbook titled The Fields of Athenry: Songs of Pete St. John (Soodlum). DANNY FARRELL (Pete St. John) I knew Danny Farrell when his football was a can, With his hand-me-downs and Welliers and his sandwiches of bran; But now that pavement peasant is a full-grown bitter man, With all the trials and troubles of his travelling people's clan' CHORUS: BR> He's a loser, a boozer, a me and you user A raider, a trader, a people police hater So lonely and only, what you'd call a gurrier Still now, Danny Farrell, he's a man. I knew Danny Farrell when he joined the National School; He was lousy at the Gaelic, Called him amadán and fool He was brilliant in the toss school or trading objects in the Pawn By the time he was an adult all his charming ways were gone... And I knew Danny Farrell when we queued up for the dole, And we tried to hide the loss of pride that eats away the soul; Mending pots and kettles was a trade lost in the past, "There's no hand-out here for tinkers" was the answer when he asked... CHORUS He's a loser, a boozer, a me and you user A raider, a trader, a people police hater So lonely and only, what you'd call a gurrier Still now, Danny Farrell, he's a man. I still know Danny Farrell, saw him just there yesterday, Taking methylated spirits with some winos on the quay; Sure, he's forty going on eighty, with his eyes of hope bereft, And he told me this for certain, there's not many of us left... He's a loser, a boozer, a me and you user A raider, a trader, a people police hater So lonely and only, what you'd call a gurrier Still now, Danny Farrell, he's a man Source: The Fields of Athenry: Songs of Pete St. John (Soodlum) |
