Subject: Folklore: Willie Clancy

I visited Ireland in 1972 and, without having the vaguest notion who he was, spent the better part of the night at a local in Milltown Malbay with Willie Clancy, Tom Murphy, John Moroney, J.C. Talty from the Tulla Ceili Band, the owner of the place and another fellow whose name eludes me after 35 years. Clancy played a number of tunes but his playing of Sliabh na Mban, sitting no more than an arm's length away, is still the musical highlight of my life. I have a number of his recordings and one of Mary O'Hara singing it in Irish, but would love to have a recording of Clancy playing it. Never heard anyone bend notes so beautifully.

If anyone knows where a recording of Clancy playing Sliabh na mBan can be had, I'd be in his debt.

The local wasn't Foudy's as they are related to Msgr. Foudy here in San Francisco and I recognized the name.

The pub was very likely Friel's which has the name Lynch over the door. Willie and co. played there all the time, hosted by Thomas and Maisie in those days.
