A few weeks ago I recorded off the air part of a set Art Thieme performed on November 4, 1979 at a benefit for Michael Cooney at Stages Music Hall in Chicago. Here's a 13.5 minute MP3 -- not very well recorded, I'm afraid -- consisting of:
The Kansas Cyclone / Shady Grove (trad)
Various song parodies
Cheyenne Indian Story
Sioux Indians (trad)
Down By The Embarras (Stracke)
The Sioux Indians performance is the one included on the marvelous collection of Art's live performances titled Chicago Town & Points West: Folk-Legacy CD-135, available here .

You're still the best, Art! And I still remember when we first met, at a coffeehouse in...was it Minnesota? I was really impressed that you were on the bill with me...and how much we laughed when you told the turtle drive story...now you're gonna say that my memory is all mixed up, and it probably is- but the memory's still a good one. Thanks          Jean

Wow I haven't been to this forum in ages... just tonight I had a night off from the normal stuff picked up the guitar played one of my favorite songs of Utah Phillips, I remember lovin you, and then tried my best to remember Nevada Jane, and after my wife sang three lines, then I was back into it... then did an old stand by that I learned from you Art.. (Or at least that tab book I bought from Fritz) Railroad Blues and Nine Pound Hammer... because of you I can do a train whistle... one more time....

Why I'm here and why I had to search MudCat... Fritz Shuler did a song that went, "I'll be there in the morning if I will, I'll be there if I won't get killed...." "...My baby lives in a ____, but it's a brickhouse just the same..." I remember the chorus and one verse...

What song was that?

btw... I maintain a songwriting blog at http://www.myspace.com/davezeman

You think this stuff is good? Well, it sure as hell is, but you should try sharing the stage with this guy. We did a humor workshop at a Hartford folk festival many years ago, and it is still a high point in my life. Thanks for being who you are my friend.

Dave, We were just in Manitowoc for a week---staying with Crol's brother and his wife. They came down here to Peru and drove us and my chair to and fro. And for 3 days I sat and schmoozed with Fritz and Mary in their "Golden Ring Music And Folklore Center!" What a treat it was now that I'm not around the music to any extent. Check with Fritz; we might be up to doing it again next year.

Kendall, I too remember that workshop well. Sorry for stealing so many of your tales and jokes!

Jean, I think I first met you in either Rockford, Illinois or maybe La Crosse, Wisconsin---the Great River Folk Festival. (Maybe a time it rained and the festival was brought indoors.) You did the opening concert I seem to trecall!?

Or was it at the Quiet Knight folk club in Chicago---in the 1970s?
Who knows? I think I did open for you there. Richard Hading's place.

Also on the bill for that banefit for Michael Cooney was Steve Goodman, Cindy Mangsen, and a guy named Pete Seeger. Just us 4.

And Bob Gibson and Allan Damron were in on the finale of "Mama Don't Allow."

Pete had a terrible cold that day and couldn't sing much at all. Steve Goodman just TOOK OVER when he had to and everybody seemed to enjoy the show. Pete sang one line of a song, motioned to the audience to join him like he does, and everyone DID. Pretty soon the song was over. Then he did an instrumental or two. Or we all joined Pete...
Stage's Music Hall was sold out for both the day show and the night show. Good memories, for sure.

As always, your music made me realize what a treasure we have in you. Your like an old ballad - each time I hear you I hear something new, something I missed the first time that just makes the song come alive again.

Take care my friend and we'll meet down the road soon.

Whew, Dan, ALWAYS, thanks for that, and for your friendship through the last 30 years. People, Dan Keding is a grand storyteller of world wide repute. He has written the storytelling column in Sing Out! magazine every issue for many years.
Daniel, it was great seeing you and Tandy recently. Love to you both.

Bruce, I wasn't aware of any of that, but whatever went down, I'm sure you're on top of it. Thanks!
People: B.K. is the one on whose website my folk scene photos are exhibited. Once again, he recently added a couple hundred of the photos I took the decade I played music on the Mississippi River.

All the best to you all,
Art

Art, I've had Chicago, Wilderness Road, and That's the Ticket in my car stereo for the last couple of weeks listening to them over and over in joy and wonder at your ability to bring a song to life and tell a story--and at your terrific banjo frailing. The Older I Get... is around the house somewhere, and when I find it it'll join the others in my iTunes and then in my car--and also, somewhere around the house, is the tape you sent me when I was trying to find the lyrics and tune for Fare Thee Titanic (gargoyle sent me the words at about the same time). That tape also has the herding turtles story--an absolute classic!

What is B.K.'s website with all your pictures?

Great to see you are still around Mudcat as master of the sheepfold.

More to groan over this morning, when I found a CD from Art in my post office box. "Studs Turtle" indeed!

Thanks, Art! :)

That got me looking. I did a Mudcat Forum search on "Art Thieme" and find an avalanche of stuff, including (apparently) all of his 5000+ posts--all good, but takes a long time to go through. Is there a way to search ONLY the thread titles for his name, to narrow it down to the threads started by others, with quotes, remarks, discography, bibliography info, etc.? I'm sure I'm forgetting a step. I don't have them all traced in my list (and that's pretty long, over all of these years).

Oh, horsepuckey, goddammn & phutt! I knew about this thread in September and didn't get to it. My only excuse is a blind, drunk, stupid (lady) driver in a van who was talking on the phone, doing her nails and chatting with her children in the back run me down just a week before. Plain run me over while I was out legally & safely (& even soberly - never drink and roll, friends) Rollerblading. I don't blame you for not believing me but I never would lie to my good friends. My URL: myspace.com/abbysale

Well, it was worth the pain just to finally catch this thread and some more terrific Thieminess. There couldn't be too much.

Thanks, Art.

Sure -- just enter "art thieme" into the Filter box, select "Age: all" from the pull down menu, and click on "Refresh."

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: A little vintage Art Thieme
From: JohnInKansas

BK -

With the present setup, "art thieme" in the filter box and age "all" will get you the first thousand threads that have both "art" and "thieme" in the title. The list returned is limited to 1,000 threads now. ("Age: all" with no filter word(s) now gets only about 2 weeks worth.)

I guess it will take some "research" to see if that's sufficient to get all the places he's been cussed and discussed here (by name), although it should be a good start. There may be a few threads with just "Art" and/or just things like "the ESTEEMED AND HONORABLE MR THIEME" that would be missed with that search as well.

We heard a rumor that there was some guy gonna write up an autobigliogligraphy, so some may have figured that the guy who's gonna do it should do most of the work; but in the absence of any report on that work, maybe we need to do some diggin' around to help out(?).

John
