On our street there is a Black Lab - Border Collie mix that has been fixed. It is nearly as big as a Great Dane and surely weighs more.
He is a gentle obediant dog.

I am partial to Russian Wolf Hounds who have a gentle disposition and move with the grace of a Cheetah.

Bobert,

Look at these two beauties. They're doing their trick called "Down. Stay." Okay, sometimes the pit cheats and does her cute commando crawl. But mostly they do it very well. They're dawg sized dogs (the catahoula is 45 lbs, the pit bull is 55 lbs.) They'll show up in your pickup truck if you let them sit on the back seat (though if you borrowed these two don't you DARE put them in the bed of an open pickup!)

They're smart, they do a few tricks, they offer unconditional love (especially when you have dog treats in your pocket!), they bark at stuff, they kill things (so far the list includes one (and only one, we hope) skunk, squirrels, possums, and sorry to say, a few of my tarantulas, lizards, and snakes.

How can you go wrong with a duo like this? Those deer will stay away. Period. The pit was an injured "no such thing as a free dog" stray, the catahoula came from the humane society.

I wish more dog owners would act in a manner which showed a little consideration for those living beside them. I kept a dog for many years and walked it twice a day and gave it time and attention. Were I live I have to listen to several dogs barking and howling day and night, their owners never come out to deal with the problem. Local councils are useless in dealing with the problem.

A dog needs attention, think long and hard before you get one.

BW, good idea, but a FARM dog? It would be a grooming nightmare, and GP's don't come cheap! Don't often see them in a mixed breed shelter dog either.

Get a Great Pyrenees. Deer do most of their damage at night and Great Pyrenees simply love doing night-time sentry duty. Just plan out a patrol route that includes all the areas of your property where deer aren't welcome, walk that route with the dog a few times, and he'll soon be walkin' it on his own several times a night.

I would suppose that once the Obama family chose a Portuguese Water Dog, the price of puppies from that breed went out of sight.

Mind you, this is not Obamadog - this is the Obama family dog, which is quite a different matter. I have to say that if the family follows fashion and shaves the hindquarters of their Portuguese Water Dog, I may have to vote Republican in 2012.

I would like to recommend something smaller, a Shih Tzuh, like my furry friend Ralph. Now, these dogs don't have to be treated like show dogs and have bows in their hair and all. If you treat them like real dogs, they'll act like real dogs - only smaller.

I don't care about the bears, skunks, racoons 'er anything but deer 'casue deer eat the P-Vine shrubs and flowers and I'm gettin' worn out shooting the sumabiches 'cause I don't eat venison and the ol' boy who will come and get 'um after I shoot 'um ain't all that easy to reach meaning I gotta load the sumabich into my tractor bucket and take it a half mile or so back in the woods for the bears to eat... That's gotten real old...

All I need is the right dog...

Let's face it folks. ALL dogs are animals and they all have undesirable traits.
My neighbor had a Sheep that was rejected by its mother, so he put it in with the Dogs. Of course he imprinted on the Dogs, and he followed them everywhere. Even learned to bark instead of bleat.
Time went along, and one day I noticed that the Sheep was missing, so I asked him what happened to it. He said, sadly, "I
had to shoot it, damn fool thing started killing Sheep."

I've owned all kinds of dogs from Mutts to pure bred and I never owned a Mutt that had the brains God gave a louse. Our present dog, Seamus, is the smartest one of all and he even has a sense of humor.

Bobert, where I live it is illegal to allow dogs to chase Deer. If you have a Groundhog problem a Dachsund is the answer. If you have Bears, a Bull Mastiff is the ticket. I dont know if Bears laugh or not but the sight of a Dachsund trying to run one off would probably do it.
You need half a dozen dogs. One for each critter.

Well, Eb, that's a good idea... Kinda like taking a car for a test ride... Our local shelter tells folks that they can bring back any animal if it ain't working out... What we need to zero in on is a mix of breeds that will do what we need a dog to do: not bark incesently, chase deer and not cats and not run off... We still have some backward laws that allows property owners to shoot and kill any dog that runs accross their land...

You know, Bobert, should you choose to search for your dog at the pound or humane society it might help you get an idea of its temperament and attitude if you took it out for a couple of walks. In Juneau, a number of people do that regularly- on occasion you meet them strolling or running several miles from the shelter. I know at least 4 people who do that.

I admire people who are so committed to making the dog's time at the shelter less stressful and more enjoyable. I would like to be able to do it but 1) I tell myself it would grieve me if I had to face the fact that a dog I had grown fond of was likely to be euthanized, and 2) I am aware that my attitude is totally selfish; the only feelings I am trying to spare are mine, not the dog's.

See what there is to fall in love with at the pound. And if you find two in a cage together with a note that says they grew up together, be sure to keep them together. They'll be much happier and balanced dogs. It's so sad when people have to get rid of their pets, especially companions like that, and hope they aren't split up.

Bobert! Oh I hope you get tha White Shepp puppy. My dear departed Puppers was a white shepherd. Look:

Puppers the Magnificent & Brave with my niece Jaelita

When he was a puppy, in order to tire him out we gave hom a tire with a rope so he could pull it around the yard! Sheps love to work and can be easily taught to chase off pesky creatures.

Just be prepared for silly people to constantly ask you if he is a wolf or a coyote or to try and convince you he can't possibly be a pure bred. White is a naturally ocurring coat color among sheps but cannot be shown in dog shows. I got tired of explaining Puppers' breed and crednetials so I just reverted to telling people he was an Alsatian which seemed to satisfy them.

I hope you get him Bobert! Puppers was the best dog we ever had and every owner of a white shep usually says the same. tempermentally they aren't any different from other Sheps but their unique color gets them a lot of attention from friends and neighbors which can help with their socialization. Our dog was so popular that he had friends we didn't even know about!

Shepherds really can'ty be beat.

Puppers busy tracking something at the park above hollywood

Some people would like to see White Sheps classified as a new breed cand call them berger Blanc Suisse - for pphotos and info go here:

LH, maybe he was a cat in a dog's body!

My gran had a lovely black cocker spaniel, "Smokey," when I was really little. I used to take him for walks around the block. He was a very nice dog. He loved to climb and had a favourite BIG slanting limb on a weeping willow tree he would run right up then come back down. I don't know if he was trying to catch birds or what. Anyway, he must've had good genes. I remember being really sad when he died.

Bassets have very dangly bits...all over the place.

I've known several cocker spaniels. Most of them were either crazy, or very stupid, or both of those at the same time. One was a sex maniac that would hump anything at all, animate or inanimate. Another was a paranoid bastard of a thing that hated everybody. He would try to sneak up from behind and nip your Achilles tendon when you weren't looking, and he stalked birds of all things!...with infinite patience. He was so good at this peculiar practice that he frequently caught robins and various other birds that were pecking about on the lawn. He would do this by spending 20 minutes or more edging up on the bird with almost imperceptibly tiny movements...then sieze it in one sudden lunge when it wasn't watching. An astonished squawk, an explosion of feathers and flailing wings, and another dead bird in the yard.

It was the one and only thing that stupid dog knew how to do well.

SRS: nope, it was just one of those freak accidents. The dog was, um, scrotally well endowed, and old, so a bit...er... saggy. I remember the dog, and the described incident, quite well, though I was a child when Auntie neutered it. She is actually one of the kindest people I've known in my entire life, but once over the shock and having seen to getting the creature to a vet, she began to see the funny side - helped that my Dad laughed his head off when she told us.

Cocker Spaniel story:

Where I grew up, there were two Scottish ladies, mother and daughter, who owned one, a cranky old unaltered male with a tendency to piddle on the feet of guests. My aunt used to visit the ladies quite often. She disliked the dog, but she was a kindhearted woman and just wore old shoes when visiting them.

So one afternoon, as she pulled out of the driveway, she heard this unholy howling, and looked round to see the ladies obviously agitated and running towards the car. Bewildered, she stopped and got out, to hear the mother crying out, "Och! Ye've ran over his wee sthroopie!" And to her immense horror, she discovered that the dog had been lying by the lane, its favourite bits hangin' out at the back, and her wheel had thoroughly crushed 'em.

The dog never piddled on my aunt's shoes again.

The first dog my family had was a cocker named "Rocky". I was a baby crawling around on the floor at the time and it used to growl and go after me. We still have home movies of it. Bit me a few times, though not hard, they say. Maybe it was jealous. Maybe cocker spaniels just don't like kids unless they've been brought up around them.

Anyway, they soon got rid of it. Found somebody else to take it on. We didn't get another dog for 5 or 6 years, but we always had one around after that.

A friend of mine had a beautiful chocolate lab who developed a growth on his head that turned out to be a cancer. They did surgery and he seemed cured for a while but his behavior became erratic and he bit family members who touched him wrong and they had him euthanized. The vet found that the tumor had returned.

As a child I used to play with various dogs in the neighborhood but was cautioned to leave the cocker spaniel at the corner alone. He would lie on his porch and I wanted to make friends. I was probably about 8 when I crept up on the porch and sat beside him--and was bit on the shoulder. They had the dog destroyed, but at the time I felt horrible, knowing I should have left him alone and it was all my fault. In hindsight, I see that if it hadn't been me it would have been another child bit, and the outcome would have been the same. The dog should have been kept where children couldn't approach him if he was a biter.

Yes, some dogs are just off their nut. Sorta like humans that way.

Some dogs just take a dislike to one human, or one category of human, like women, children, or men. In some cases, all you can do is put them down and out of their misery.

Sadly we can't put down humans in the same category. Or, even just 'let them die'. But that is a whole 'nother story isn't it?

Bobert, good luck finding a dog for YOUR life. I know she's out there waiting for you and P Vine.

He's got an obsession with ridding the neighborhood of the little varmints, but has no problems with the cats. Check with West Tennessee Animal Rescue, maybe they've got another one.

When my daughter was four, a standard collie bit her on the leg. We were visiting my brother and sister in law and my daughter and her cousin were playing in the orchard. Without warning - no bark, no growl - the dog bit her and then headed for home across the fence.

After cleansing the wound I settled my daughter on the couch and went outside. I wasn't thinking clearly or maybe I was being more clear than usual- I untied my brother's big dog and we went over to the neighbor in their back yard. I told the wife what their dog had done. His name was Timmy, she said.

I said, sharply, Timmy. Come here.

This sounds other worldish but the dog would leap for my face, my brother's dog would jump up and hit him in the chest knocking him down. I'd repeat, Timmy. Come here.

I was going to literally choke him to death. ha Fat chance.

Eventually I gave up and took my daughter to the doctor where he took stitches in two puncture wounds; the third wound was shallower and he just put a gauze bandage over it.

That evening my brother went over to his neighbor and they talked. They came over and asked to see the wounds. I uncovered the shallow one and they said, OK.

They went home and shot their dog.

Turned out that he had bit children before and they were under city injunction to keep him tied.

It was a scary - and sad - day. I have always loved dogs.

That's the truth, Bobert, but, like humans, every now and then one of 'em has a defective brain from the start. Can't blame that on breed, colour or upbringing, it's just luck of the draw. Becca may have met one of them. My cousins had one. It was usually quiet and well behaved, not skittish or cross, but when it hit around four, it started randomly biting people, without warning, just walk by you quiet as a mouse, turn and chomp a hunk out of the back of your leg. They put it down after it bit the preacher.

Not to be the downer here, but I was attacked by the neighbor's white german shepard when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Bit me in the face which was pretty nasty. Lucky for me we were both moving and he didn't get the chance to grab on really well. The Mr owner was quite upset and wanted to get rid of the thing, but we kids somehow convinced him it was my fault for playing in the back yard and he kept him. A year or 2 later the dog attacked Mrs owner in the kitchen and nearly killed her. They had him put down after that. Don't know if it was the breed or the dog, but it was some pretty scary shit.

All of my pets except one wandered in off the streets and decided to stay, and the one we chose voluntarily came from the Humane Society (the blue heeler as a companion for the pit). She's the annoying one, actually, a bit hyper, but a very sweet and loving animal.

I agree. I don't need no steeenkin' pedigree papers. The only dogs I have ever 'purchased' were Humane Society offerings and I was happy to put some money into their coffers.

I think white German Shepherds are beautiful. You do want to make sure it isn't albino, though. Real eye problems. And the occasional white pup of some breeds tend to be deaf.

Ummmm, first of all, I won't "buy" any dog... Nope, with the expense of havin' one around they better come as freebees...

So we did go to Leesburg today and we talked with some folks who know all about dogs...

But this was after picking up my mom, who lives there, and meeting my brother for lunch and the topic came up... Seems that an ol' friend of the family has a white German Sheppard puppy... He has always owned German Sheppards and is a great trainer... I believe the puppy might not be spoken for but won't know until my brother gets a hold of our friend...

The best dog I ever had was a white German Sheppard... I found her under the old armory in Richmond (don't ask why I was there...) and she was about 3 years old, stray, etc... Wonderful dog...

As fir a puppy??? Yeah, I know that puppy's can be a pain-in-the-butt but I think if we are going to be able to 1.) train it and 2.) get it to coexist with our cats then a puppy is going to be the best scenerio.... Fortunately, we both have patience......

Will keep everyone posted on our progress...

Bobert

Intersting breed, the Korean. I looked it up. Sounds like my kind of dog. (but Sorch, you have 4 Corgis and a Max....quite a great plenty!)

Put in in a rocky stream bed, ibo. and then go away for a while. They are very shy and won't breed while you're watching. Come back in a few days and there will be baby pet rocks scattered around.
