Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band is a part of the personal history of a lot of people my age. They used to do courtyard concerts and dances at our university when I was there in the early '70's. I also remember their May Day dances at the town hall. Brothers Mic and Jim Conway co-founded the band. They were all brilliant. High energy, clever musicians, funny, creative. Memorable.

(May Day is a workers' day celebrating the introduction of the 8 hour day but in NSW we have the Labour Day public holiday in early October.)

I can remember hearing a parody of this called Blues My Sweaty Nightie Gave To Me but I can't - perhaps fortunately - remember the words.

Am                               B7    (It's important to add the B7)
And there are blues that you get from pain.

My friend, Bill Rutan (The Jazz Banjo Man) does the best version I've heard. He doesn't record because he's too busy working gigs to find the time.

Just looked at this thread - reminded me of an old 78rpm that died a stepped on death on a drunken W1 night in 66 or 67 - but the lyric started " There are blues that make you happy......". As I remember the band (jug) was pre-WWW2. Any clues ??

Subject: Lyr Add: BLUES (MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 03 Oct 07 - 07:20 AM

Here are the original lyrics, from the sheet music at The Archive of Popular American Music at UCLA:

BLUES (MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME)
Arthur N. Swanstone, Charles R. McCarron, & Carey Morgan
New York: Jos. W. Stern & Co., © 1919.

VERSE 1. What is that song about kisses? What is that song about smiles?
If I could have my way, I'd sing a song today
That would beat them all by miles.
I wouldn't sing about smiling. That's not the title I'd choose.
I would sing about what I've got, and what I've got's the weary blues.

CHORUS 1: There are blues that you get from worry,
There are blues that you get from pain,
And there are blues when you're lonely,
For your one and only,
The blues you can never explain.
There are blues that you get from longing,
But the bluest blues that can be
Are the sort of blues that's on my mind.
They're the very meanest kind,
The blues my naughty sweetie gives to me.

VERSE 2. No use in chasing those rainbows. Rainbows will never help you.
They look so bright and gay, but they will fade away,
Then you'll find the sky's all blue.
Look at the ocean and that's blue. My sweetie's eyes are blue too.
When she got me, she blew away, and natur'ly that makes me blue.

CHORUS 2: There are blues that you get when single.
Those are blues that will give you pain,
And there are blues when you're lonely,
For your one and only,
The blues you can never explain.
There are blues that you get from longing
To hold someone on your knee,
But the kind of blues that always stabs,
Comes from hiring taxicabs,
The blues my naughty sweetie gives to me.

CHORUS 3: There are blues that you get from sweetie
When she phones to another guy,
And there are blues when your honey
Spends all of your money
And blues when she tells you a lie.
There are blues that you get when married,
Wishing that you could be free.
But the kind of blues that's good and blue
Comes from buying wine for two,
The kind of blues my sweetie gives to me.

The John Denver lyric:

Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me

This song was first released on the John Denver Sings album. It is the only album it has been released on.

Now there are blues that you get from happiness
There are blues that you get from pain
Blues when you are lonely for your one and only
Blues that are hard to explain

And there are blues that you get from waitin'
Oh, but the meanest, the meanest blues that be
There are kinda I got on my mind
Blues there are all very meanest kind
Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me
Oh, yeah

Oh, there are blues you get from women when you see 'em goin' swimmin' and you haven't got a bathin' suit yourself
There are blues that start to flicker when you had a lot of liquor and someone goes and takes it off the shelf
There are blues you get from waitin' on the dock, and you wonderin' if your little boat is gonna rock
Blues you keep a-gettin' in a taxicab a-pettin' every time you hear the meter jump the clock

There are blues you get from tryin' to keep your uncle Will from dyin' and he afterwards forgets you in his will
There are blues that get from kisses when you are walkin' with the missus and another baby shouts, "Hey, Bill!"
Blues that kinda make you hop and can't wait to shake and shiver, kinda make you want to end it all in the river
Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me
Oh, swing that thing!

Now there are blues you get from women when you see 'em goin' swimmin' and you haven't got a bathin' suit your own self

There are blues you get from tryin' to keep your uncle Will from dyin' and he afterwards forgets you in his will
There are blues that get from kisses when you are walkin' with the missus and another baby shouts, "Hey, Patrick!"
Blues that kinda make you hop and can't wait to shake and shiver, kinda make you want to end it all in the river
Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me
Let me hear it again
Oh, blues my naughty sweetie gives to me
Just one more time
Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me
Yeah!

I used to sing this with a band called the Greasy Greens and here are a few modifications we used.

But the bluest blues there be
Are the blues that I've got on my mind
They're the very meanest kind
The blues my naughty sweetie gives to me.

There are blues you get from setting
In a taxi cab and fretting
Every time you hear the bumper jump the clock.(that's the ticking of the meter)

But the blues that make you wanna hop and stomp and shake and shiver

It's a great song for big bands because everyone can take a line or two.

Subject: Lyr Add: BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME
From: Tony Burns

In The Mudcat Shop: River

The words jogged my memory and the chords started coming back to mind. I modified the words a bit to match what I'd learned in the 60's while serving in the Navy with an officer who said he played this while a member of The Back Porch Majority.

BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME

                Em
There are blues that you get from loneliness
                      Am
And there are blues that you get from pain.
                      B7
And there are blues when you are lonely
       Em
For your one and only
F#                  B7
Blues you can never explain.
                Em
I said there are blues that you get from sleepless nights,
                   Am
Oh, but the meanest blues that I've seen:
                   E                  E7
They're the blues that I've got on my mind,
   A            A7      A
I mean the very meanest kind,
D7                               G
Blues my naughty sweetie gives to me.

                              Fret: 3 2 1 Open
Single string rundown on 6th string: G F# F E last note into Em Chord
Rundown matches 1st three words.
Also, nice effect if each chord in the next 6 lines is hit as one single stroke as the words are sung. Seventh line continue normal strumming.

3    2    1   Em
Well there are blues you get from women
         Em
When you see 'em going swimming
       Em                            Em
And you haven't got a bathing suit yourself.
          Am
There are blues you get much quicker
            Am
When you're drinking lots of liquor,
       Am                            Am
And somebody goes and takes it off the shelf.
             B7
And there are blues you get when everything's in hock,
          Em
When your sweetie doesn't answer when you knock,
             F#
And there are blues you get from getting

In a taxicab and fretting
      B7
Every time you feel the bumper jump a clock.

And there are (Em)blues you get from trying
To keep your Uncle Bill from dying,
And he afterwards forgets you in his will.
And there are (Am)blues you get from kisses
When you're walking with your Mrs.
And another baby shouts, "Hi, Bill!"
But the (E7)blues that make you hop and wanna stop and shake and shiver
(A7)Blues that make you wanna go and end it in the river,
(D7)Blues my naughty sweetie gives to (G)me.

Whale Oil Beef Hooked! A friend played this at a party just a few nights ago. I'd never heard it before and I loved it. I made a mental note to search the 'Cat for the words, but I guess it should've been a paper note 'cause the mental one got lost. So here it just appears like one of those mushrooms that just pops up in your yard overnight. Amazing!

I don't know how to break it to you, but the Hoosier Hotshots used to do this in the 40's, maybe the 30's.

They also did The Girl Friend of the Whirling Dervish and The Coat and the Shirt Do All of the Work, But the Vest Gets all the Gravy.

My God, doesn't anyone remember the Hoosier Hotshots? Hezzie, Kenny, Frank and Gabey?

You know, I tried a number of times to find something on this tune through the Digitrad (no luck); I never thought to run a thread-trace... typical rookie...

Sure, I remember Jim Kweskin and his band... an amazing group of musicians. I heard them in the sixties before they self-destructed. I know the song from the singing of Clancy Hayes with Bob Scobey's Frisco band. I don't think anyone could touch Clancy as a singer, even though I really liked Jim's singing.

This was an old Jim Kweskin Jug Band tune (ca mid-60's)...

My old LP finally self-destructed years ago, before I had the foresight to memorize or otherwise work the tune out. Certainly not a critical request, but I would appreciate any help tendered my way...

Does anyone remember Jim's Band ? Maria 'Midnight at the Oasis' Muldaur was a member, with solid fiddle and vocals...

Thanks, M.

I've known this song since the fifties, when Bob Scobey recorded it, with Clancy Hayes singing the lead. The Scobey band was the main force in reviving classic jazz (dixieland in its watered down version) and did many, many great songs.. Sailing Down To Chesapeake Bay, Oceana Roll, Silver Dollar, Peoria, Beale Street Blues, etc. The albums have all been re-issued on Old-Time Jazz.

The Greenbriar Boys did it on their second album. Something like:

There are blues you get from wimmin
When you see 'em goin' swimmin'
And you haven't got a bathin' suit yourself.
There are blues that start to flicker
When you've had a lot of likker
And someone goes and takes it off the shelf.
There are blues you get from waitin' in the dark,
And blues you get from walkin' in the park,
There are blues you get from settin'
In a taxicab and frettin'
Every time you hear the meter jump the clock.
And there are blues you get from cryin'
When your Uncle Bill is dyin'
And he afterwards forgets you in his will.
There's the blues you get from kisses
When you're walkin' with your missus
And another woman shouts, "Hi, Bill!"
But the kind to make you start, make you really shake and shiver,
The kind to make you want to end it all in the river,
That's the blues my naughty sweetie gave to me.

I know a version very different inthe verses in many places. If I could only remember the beginning, or the song before it on the tape - it was called Jung Band music, someone taped it for me, who was it if it had both Jug Band Music and this blues, plus Memphis information get in touch with my Marie??? I'd love to get it on CD, the tape is getting kind of whiny... and then I'll post the lyrics to that version.

Greetings from the Blue Mountains of Oz!
May I recommend the version that introduced me to the song.. that of the Captain Matchbox Whoopie Band, on their 1974? album "Wangaratta Wahine". A fabulous album with a great cover by cartoonist Michael Leunig, since re-released on CD. My email is francis_dutton@hotmail.com if anyone needs more help finding it.
Best, F.D.

Here it is again? This is the third request in a month. Is it the moon? Is it in the ether? Inquiring minds want to know.

Subject: Lyr Add: BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME
From: Tony Burns

This has been a popular topic recently.

I went to the Jugband Rag site and got the words to this but the chords don't all fit the tune as I know it from Kweskin's recordings. The first part is ok but it falls apart after a while. Does anyone have a better set of chords? (I'm still working on it but haven't got it yet).

Here's what was at the Jugband Rag site.

BLUES MY NAUGHTY SWEETIE GIVES TO ME
Swanstone/Carvon/Morgan
on Kweskin's See Reverse Side For Title

Suggested tablature:
Am // Dm // E7 // Am // B7 E7
Am // Dm E7 // Am // Am // G C

There are blues that you get from loneliness
And there are blues that you get from pain.
And there are blues when you are lonely
For your one and only
And there blues you can never explain.

And there are blues that you get from sleepless nights,
Oh, but the meanest blues that be:
They're the blues that I've got on my mind,
I mean the ones that are the meanest kind,
They're the blues my naughty sweetie gives to me.

There are blues you get from women when you see 'em going swimming and you haven't got a bathing suit yourself.
There are blues you get much quicker when you're drinking lots of liquor, and somebody goes and takes it off the shelf.
And there are blues you get when everything's in hock,
When your girlfriend doesn't answer when you knock,
And there are blues you get from getting in a taxicab and fretting everytime you feel the bumper jump a clock.

And there are blues you get from trying to keep your Uncle Bill from dying, and he afterwards forgets you in his will.
And there are blues you get from kisses when you're walking with your Mrs. and another girl shouts, "Hi, Bill!"
But the blues that make you hop and want to stop and shake and shiver
Are they blues that want you want to go and end it in the river,
They're the blues my naughty sweetie gives to me.

It's on the latest Kweskin compilation issued earlier this year by Vanguard - Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band 'Acoustic Swing and Jug' Vanguard 79521-2. Great sound on this CD, much better than on an earlier (and almost identical in terms of songs) compilation on Vanguard.

Cheers, Stewie
