It depends upon the value of the guitar and the thickness of the paint. I don't see anything wrong with a thin coat of paint on a cheapie guitar but I wouldn't paint any expensive guitar.

Seamus Kennedy has a painted guitar and it doesn't seem to adversely affect his performance in any way.
