Thread Name: Lyr/Tune Req: Yiddle on Your Fiddle Play...Ragtime
Subject: RE: music hall songs
Doesn't sound like the song I know! I'll have to look out the album when I get home to find the recording date, but I think the English (American?) Music hall song is earlier than the '30s. It was definitely an English MH performer who recorded the version I have. I always though it was one of those silly songs which revolve around a rather nonsensical but euphonious phrase ('Yiddle on the fiddle'), which just happens to take the Mickey out of London Jews a little, wthout being anti-Semitic (and I dont think it's offensive by the standards of the day); but maybe it's an expression that was already around for some years?

Here's the first verse and chorus for starters. Note that Yiddle is black, as well as Jewish (Sammy Davis Jr sprngs to mind!).

Ev'ryone was springing, dancing, singing
At a wedding yesterday.
Yiddle on his fidde played some ragtime,
And when Sadie heard him play,
She jumped up and looked him in the eye,
Yiddle puffed his chest right out;
Ev'ryone was taken by surprise
When they heard Sadie say:

(chorus)
Yiddle, on your fiddle,
In the middle play some ragtime!
I'm dizzy, get busy,
I'm feeling two years young!
My chocolate baby, if you'll maybe
Play for Sadie some more ragtime;
Yiddle, don't you stop, if you do I'll drop,
'Cause I just can't make my eyes stop up,
Yiddle, on your fiddle, play some ragtime!
