Thread Name: Ballads in Robin Hood stories
Subject: RE: Ballads in Robin Hood stories
I tried to use the Internet to answer the simple question, "Where did the Robin Hood stories come from?" I couldn't find the answer. Most writers were only interested in the historicity of Robin Hood, and I was ready to call him a fictional character from the get-go.

I believe that the oldest sources of Robin Hood tales were old ballads. That is, there weren't ballads IN the stories, the ballad was the whole enchilada. Later, when more people learned to read and books sales to the public became possible, authors took the plots and the characters from the ballads and wrote stories.

In my experience, it's lot easier to find the words for an old ballad than to find the tune. It would be interesting to know where Ed McCurdy got the tunes for the album described above by Thomas Stern. Thanks, Thomas.
