Westhoughton Library; Local History Group
10am 15 August Dramatic production based on the Peterloo massacre.
15 August to 30 September Exhibition about local people present at St Peter's Fields, including William Hulton.

In 1811 Hulton was responsible for the arrest of twelve Luddites who had set fire to a Westhoughton weaving mill. Four of them, including a twelve year old boy, were hanged. Another man at a Westhoughton mill was transported for seven years for "administering oaths". Hulton read the Riot Act on St Peter's Fields and sent in the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry. The Home Secretary, Viscount Sidmouth, sent him a message of congratulations. Hulton described 16 August as "the proudest day in my life."
