Joe, I am sure you are much better informed on these matters than I am. However the good relations between the leaders of the main religions are fairly recent development, and seem to me to be based on a commonality of interest in a secular world rather than a theological meeting of minds. On a day-to-day level, most religions do not regard others as equal and, for example, place obstructions on someone marrying outside the faith.

The extremists have a habit of becoming the mainstream. One has only to consider the history of the Crusades, or the Reformation in Europe, to see that the slaughter of non-believers was by no means confined to a few fanatics.

My point is that religions are not shy of criticizing others and expressing views which others find offensive. However when they are criticised or ridiculed they demand special protection. If religions are confident in their own essential truth, they should be robust enough not to be worried by criticism, however harsh and perhaps even unfair it may seem.
