Note that the formulation as an expression of disbelief or denunciation as nonsense will always follow a conditional adverbial clause beginning 'if', in the form "If such-and-such should be the case, I'll take vanilla".

I first came across this usage when playing an American in a production of Noel Coward's Relative Values, where it is used by another American character. The play was first produced 1951, which is the date given in an online catchphrase dictionary I googled as the one when the usage was current.
