Good advice. Check with a doctor. Otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist). He or she can look at your vocal cords and check their condition, then tell how to proceed from there.

Then, depending on what the doctor tells you, get to a good, competent voice teacher, and they can guide you from there.

Never, ever, no time, push your voice beyond what it wants to do with some ease. DON'T push your voice into a range that starts getting uncomforable. Discomfort, and especially pain, is Nature's way of telling you to quit doing whatever you're doing.

P. S. There's a reason that someone (especially a non-singer) who goes to a sports event and does a lot of yelling and cheering is often hoarse and croaky the following day. They've done a number on their vocal mechanism. In their excitement at the game, they've pushed their voice beyond what it is accustomed to doing. You have to build up to things slowly and carefully.
