I've resurfaced at the Cool Beans' residence in the greater Detroit area, Huntington Woods in particular. My voyage across Lake Ontario was uneventful except for the occasional sighting of the rare and endangered great fresh-water whales.

Marty (Cool Beans) and I had a good time swapping songs and stories in the afternoon, and after a fine supper with his wife Laura there was a music party that included Marie-Aine (Mudcat), Bert (an old-time fiddler), Craig (guitarist) and a supporting cast for choruses and refrains. We had a whole lot of fun and it's always interesting to see what new songs, and old songs, a new group comes up with. It's also been some time since I've played with a good old-time fiddler; I'd love to have Bert do some accompaniment on some of my songs and this just might happen given that he plans to revisit fiddle camp in Maine this June.

I led "West Indies Blues," "Mobile Bay," "Tramps," "Mid-Watches," "Dead-Dog Cider," "Old Fiddle," and ended the evening with "Shafted in Shaftsburg." Some of the fiddle tunes that I got Bert to lead included "Cold Frosty Morning," "Home with the Girls in the Morning," "Colored Aristrocracy," and "Whiskey before Breakfast."

Hopefully, Cool Beans will fill in the correct titles of some of the other songs that he and others led but it was all great fun.

Today I'll do some more practice for the concert/workshop at Elderly Instruments on Saturday. And Friday morning I'll venture up to East Lansing and then join the gang for Residents Night at the Ten Pound Fiddle.

This is hard work but someone has to do it!
