Thread Name: Lyr/chords: Summertime (Gershwin)
Subject: Lyr Add: SUMMERTIME (Heyward, Gershwin, Gershwin)
Couple corrections to the lyrics Ted posted above (including the one Alfie mentioned:

The original line was "... you'll spread your wings and take the sky." No "to."

The song's done a lot of morphing and folkifying as it's become a standard.

Lyrics, DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin. Music, George Gershwin. 1935
(from Porgy & Bess)

Summertime an' the livin' is easy.
Fish are Jumpin' an' the cotton is high.
Your daddy's rich an' your momma's good lookin',
So hush, little baby, don't you cry.

One of these mornin's you're gonna rise up singin'.
You'll spread your wings
An' take the sky,
But till that mornin', nothin' can harm you
With daddy an' mammy standin' by.

There are always slight variations in the printed (and sung) lyrics, e.g. "mammy" vs. "mama, but I am sure of the "take the sky" (without the "to"), the "nothin'" (instead of "nobody") and that there's no "the" before "fish" in the second line in the original.
