My GOD!!!! No one has mentioned THe Tripods, based on John Christopher's trilogy, the BBC in its ultimate wisdom did the first two books...and DIDN'T COMPLETE THE STORIES!!!! I mean what a bunch of five-knuckle-shufflers. OTT, but Tarrant's gone on to bigger thinks and Rainbow, what a wonderful show.
