Most interesting Geoff, thank you. I am a little suspicious regarding: ...brass instruments were chosen because big men who worked in manual occupations could still play the valves on a cornet whereas they might be unable to produce the delicacy of fingering needed for something like a violin.... though. Do you have any evidence to back that up? JJ
