When this thread started, a laptop meant a Windows laptop (and a notebook was a more-portable laptop). I read recently that, since Covid 19, three times as many Chromebooks have been sold in the US as Windows laptops/notebooks.

For some users, a chromebook is a good choice. But it's not windows! It has pros (cheaper, no malware, simple backup) and cons (you need to be online, you have to use built-in or online applications such as Google Docs). You can use USB CD/DVD drives - I'm surprised that any chromebook lacks a USB port.

Digressing slightly, a 'tablet' used either to be an iPad or Android and didn't have a keyboard. Now many run ChromeOS and have attachable keyboards so you can stand them on a desk to type or sit on the sofa to browse. Some are more powerful than most laptops. One of these may be a viable alternative to a laptop.
